Manual is too nerdyAfter playing a little with WebERP and reading a little in the manual I find that specially the manual is more aimed at developers then users. I find the manual quite hard to read and confusing.
I would suggest to separate strictly between information that is aimed at developers, and those aimed at users. Not to have to rewrite the whole manual I would suggest to do that simply with different font colors, or have a different background color for dev stuff. In "Accounts Receivable" all fields are explained in great detail, but there is no procedure. There should be a simple tutorial that explains how to create an invoice, or a p/o. Best would be an easy to follow format such as "Main Menu > Enter An Order or Quotation > ...." and so on. That should be done for all major tasks. Even if it's very obvious, such as creating a supplier. Keep in mind that in some companies those doing the accounting are not software experts and any ERP looks frightening to some extend. WebERP look beautiful, would be nice if it could be usable too. PS: so far I didn't manage to create a P/O , leave alone print one (or even see any P/O or Invoice in the system already) |

Re: Manual is too nerdyHi,
Well I would say that the documentation is as it stands aimed at accountants, not developers, as indeed is the software. I have suggested before that someone would like to put together a "beginners guide". Perhaps you would like to take on this initiative? This is an open source project is a result of lots of peoples efforts, and its not just developers who can contribute. You specifically said that you could not raise a purchase order. Could you elaborate on what your problem was so that I could help? WebERP is perfectly usable but like any tool it needs to be used correctly to achieve the right results :) Thanks Tim 2009/10/9 saenger <hiphop242@...>: > > After playing a little with WebERP and reading a little in the manual I find > that specially the manual is more aimed at developers then users. Re: Manual is too nerdyDas möchte ich - vorsichtig ausgedrückt - weder bekräftigen noch dementieren.

Re: Manual is too nerdyHi,
I am aware that it's aimed mostly at accountants. However, it has a materials function too. Since it's free I also presume it's rather aimed at smaller companies, maybe a few 1 person companies too. I still think a shortcut manual would be nice. My last printer came with two manuals, one full one, and one for those that don't read manuals, just one page long. Something like that with the most basic parts would be nice. Otherwise you risk that many people take a look - and give up. The number of time WebERP gets downloaded doesn't mean much. How often it's used counts. Harald, I agree, but it doesn't help much. A user that does not understand the most basic steps will not hire a specialist to implement the system in the company. I think what would be helpful would be a few examples within the Demo that a user can do. Such as creating an invoice, creating a p/o, starting a new material list etc. |

Re: Manual is too nerdyHi,
Although it would be perfectly usable in a one person company, I don't think thats the real intended usage of webERP. The functionality of webERP is well ahead of something like Quickbooks which is more suited to that sort of enterprise. I think you may be confusing your freedoms http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html The fact that the code for webERP is given away freely doesn't mean hat it is somehow inferior, or only suited to small one person companies. As I said in a previous email I would gladly accept any contributions to the documentation that you wish to give us. This is not me being facetious, it is the way that Free software works. As for the point about the number of users or the number of downloads mattering, then actually neither really matter. We are not a commercial organisation that has to meet sales targets to survive. My motivation behind contributing to webERP is to create good ERP software. I suspect that if we succeed then users will follow, but whatever, I have fun creating good ERP software. Re: Manual is too nerdyYou are absolutely right. We really do need some simple HOW-TO guides
that we can collate into a user manual. As you say rather cruely the manual is too nerdy and aimed more at accountants and developers looking to understand the workings of the system - which is no help really to someone looking to create bill of material. What we need here are some users who can write and explain clearly that are prepared to share their knowledge. Phil saenger wrote: > Hi, > > I am aware that it's aimed mostly at accountants. Re: Manual is too nerdyWhether WebERP is inferior or not is not the question. That depends really on what its used for and compared to. I have had a look at a few packages and still like WebERP a lot. The MySQL/PHP allows really lots of flexibility and can make it very adaptable. It appears much leaner too then OpenBravo or OpenERP. Nuff said about that.
For an easy guide I think http://www.weberp.org/WeberpFaq would be a suitable space. How about it?

Re: Manual is too nerdyYes use the wiki - but better me thinks to add new pages are required
for each HOW-TO Phil saenger wrote: > Whether WebERP is inferior or not is not the question. That depends really on > what its used for and compared to. Re: stockmoves.NewqohThis occurs when two people are dispatching at the same time. I have updated ConfirmDispatch_invoice.php in cvs with a fix for this. It wont cure any past issues like this one, but will stop it happening in future.
