This past Wednesday I woke up disoriented for a moment before
remembering where I was. Questions like "where are my pants" and "who
are you" flashed in my head until the quick realization hit me that it
was actually someone I've known for a while. Whew!

After breakfast we drove back to my house which was covered in 8-10
inches of powder. No one had yet used the trailhead behind the house,
snow was still falling and life was good. We took our sweet time
skinning to the top of my backyard. After two hours, we were staring
down some sickness covered in 12-14 inches of fluff. Afterward we made
the big traverse back to town, checked the mail with skis still
underfoot, went inside and celebrated. Pretty freakin' sweet. The
video shows the rest:

has to do with my dog's name more than anything... who, at 6, has been
rejuvinated back into her 2 year old self. with carefully watching her
diet (much easier since i moved out of a house full of bbq grillers)
and dosing her with glucosamine every day for a year, she's dropped 20
pounds (!) and shows no signs of the arthritis she had a year ago...

I've got a seriously mellow 7 (8 now, wow) year old ridge back who is
pretty hesitant about charging down anything but a groomer. It just
looks like fun to have a dog nipping at your heels the whole way down
like that.

Strange? Are you a youngster perhaps?

That's The Bangles doing a cover of Simon and Garfunkle's "Hazy Shade
of Winter". Spend some quality time with Wikipedia and YouTube if
you're unfamiliar with either band.

It was certainly a great choice for Matt's vid, and far better than
the vastly overused and abused "These Are The Days" from Natalie
Merchant/10K Maniacs or U2's execrable "I Still Haven't Found What
I'm Looking For" piece of dreck.

From the Wiki entry for HSoW:

"Hazy Shade of Winter" is a song written by

making it the second most popular song on the album after
"<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mrs._Robinson>Mrs. Robinson", which

The lyrics evoke the passage of the

A harder-edged cover of "A Hazy Shade of Winter" was performed by

<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Less_Than_Zero_%28film%29>Less Than

The lyrics:

Time, time, time, see what's become of me
While I looked around
For my possibilities
I was so hard to please
But look around, leaves are brown
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter

Hear the salvation army band
Down by the riverside, its bound to be a better ride
Than what you've got planned
Carry your cup in your hand
And look around, leaves are brown now
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter

Hang on to your hopes, my friend
That's an easy thing to say, but if your hopes should pass away
Simply pretend
That you can build them again
Look around, the grass is high
The fields are ripe, its the springtime of my life

Ahhh, seasons change with the scenery
Weaving time in a tapestry
Wont you stop and remember me
At any convenient time
Funny how my memory slips while looking over manuscripts
Of unpublished rhyme
Drinking my vodka and lime

But look around, leaves are brown now
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter

Look around, leaves are brown
Theres a patch of snow on the ground...

Awesome.

Nice to know you're getting some.

And the choice of music was good too.

20, so yeah, in comparison to the rest of the list, pretty young. I
did grow up listening to the mom's tapes of simon and garfunkle and
the bengals in the car though, so i'm familiar with both. i just
didn't think the song fit the video, besides of course the lyrics.
It's pretty clear that i'm the odd man out on this one though so i'll
tuck my tail and run from any further debate.

Many of us feel we know Winter almost in person based on Duph's
posts, stills and vids of the four-legged lass. She's one hell of a
dog, and arguably the love of Matt's life to date.  Considering what
they've been through together, I understand why.

Matt, it's good to see her back in form!

Oh, and Sam.... Winter wouldn't tuck tail and run.  Be inspired.  8->

And some of us have been lucky enough to ski with her.  Watching Winter
haul-ssa through the glades of Loveland Pass during her puppy years just
made everyone smile; she was having more fun than any of us!  Glad to see
she's getting back out there, Mapadu.

ps: She gets my vote for best ski dog.  She runs next to you, not trying to
get run over or trying to bite your ankles like most dogs.  Plus, she can
hike several thousand verts and then still run all the way down.

IMatt, How old is Winter? My dog, PIper, is almost nine, and she's had hip and knee problems since she was four. We do all those same things...watch her diet and glucosamine...but she still can't hike for more than three miles and that's if it's mostly flat. It's sad when your best friend can't adventure with you. You're lucky! Love your pup!
