Md EZ-Pass fees

I just received a notice from Maryland EZ-Pass that they will institute a
new set of fees, including a $1.50/month charge (previously, there was no
charge) for each account.  I guess the float from the deposit accounts just
isn't enough to satisfy them these days of budget shortfalls.

This sucks.  I specifically picked MD over other states because they didn't
have a fee.  I just don't get out on toll roads enough to make it worthwhile
to have an EZ Pass if there are recurring charges.  Maryland's program was
ideal for me, because I just had to load the account once w/$25 and then was
set for a year or so.

I even semipermanetly installed the EZ Pass under my dash, even, so it's
always there if needed.  Time to take apart the dashboard and remove it, I
guess.

Anyone know of a state offereing EZ Pass without fees?

I'm pretty sure that VA doesn't charge me fees, but I've been a subscriber
for about 10 years. I have two passes (and my wife has one). I keep one in
the cage and one on the bike. They take a $35 advance on my credit card
whenever the balance drops below $5 or $10. I'm pretty sure that
auto-replenishment prevents me from being charged any additional fees.

Maybe I need to go online and check my account to make sure they're not
charging me any fees...

No fees in va but they need a big deposit per transponder unless you give them your checking account. And they won't give statements even online unless you pay a fee that basically matches the md one. All in all it's the same evil in a different package.

No fees for VA is correct.  But the VA website implies VA residents only?

I don't know about that. I'm a MD resident. I work in VA. However, the rules
may have changes in the last 10 years.

Okay.  Well, I've tried to set up an account and was denied, with the
helpful explanation... "Sorry, your account cannot be created at this
moment, please try again."

And, of course, no real live person on the weekends.  Oh well.

Got the same thing.  Friend in NJ said they don't have any fees.  I'm
up here now.  Will check it out when I get home.

Actually, it's your credit card they want, but auto-replenishment is far more convenient anyway. And you get online quarterly statements for free. Mailed statements, or more frequent statements cost extra, however.

I'm fine with auto replenishment, but I don't like giving anyone my
checking account.  With two transponders, it's the choice of $50
deposit or give them my checking account.  I don't like that at all.

From https://www.ezpassva.com/StaticPages/FAQ.aspx#8

8. How much do I have to pay to open an E-ZPass account?

When you open an E-ZPass account, you are required to pre-pay a
minimum of $35 in tolls for each E-ZPass transponder on your account.
This is your available balance. As tolls are deducted, your available
balance decreases. When this balance reaches a low balance, you are
required to make a payment of your average monthly toll usage. The
minimum payment is $35 per transponder.

In addition you are required to pay a $25 security deposit for each
transponder on loan to you. This deposit is fully refundable when you
return your transponder in its original condition and your E-ZPass
account is in good standing. The security deposit is waived when you
open an account and select automatic replenishment by direct debit
electronic funds transfer via ACH from your checking/savings account
and provide a credit card as a secondary payment method.

> And you get online quarterly statements for free. Mailed statements, or more frequent statements cost extra, however.

You get free summary statements.  So they can basically bill me random
amounts without telling me how they arrived at those numbers.  And if
I want them to tell me how they arrived at the numbers in the bill,
they charge me money to find out.  I am not too fond of that, either.

I don't have a VA account - does the website at least give a breakdown
of tolls even if you're on the quarterly plan?

From https://www.ezpassva.com/StaticPages/FAQ.aspx#26

26. Can I get a statement to track my expenses?

E-ZPass statement options are available to help you track your
expenses. Quarterly summary statements are available online free of
charge. Detailed monthly statements are also available, starting at $1
per month. The detailed statements provide a list of the account
activity for the month, including toll transactions and replenishments
to your account, while the quarterly statements provide the summarized
totals that occurred over a three-month period. To see examples of
each statement, click the links below:

Interesting.  I guess I'm grandfathered.  I have 3 EZ Passes, and have never given them a checking account number.

While the "statement" is a summary, on the web site you can see every transaction within a selected date range.  I'm not sure how far back it goes, but I just ran a report of all transactions from 4/1/09 through today.

Thanks - just knowing I have access to the actual info is good.  I
don't care about the mailing, but I want to see the transaction
details for a variety of reasons.

FW: Md EZ-Pass fees

I live in Virginia. I got a Maryland speedpass b/c we picked the Maryland one up after sitting in traffic waiting and saw the Harbor Tunnel Thruway line for speedpass was empty and the cash line was jammed. So I stopped and got one near the toll booth. I am not keeping it to pay $1.50 a month. I signed up for the Virginia plan.

I wonder how many people will return the things when told they are going to be charged a fee each month.
If virginia's wasn't free I'd not have one at all.

I suspect people who commute on a toll road will pay the $1.50 just for the time savings each day.  But occasional users, yeah, will probably cancel in droves.
