Memory amount required for 2009.1 livecd install?

See subject.  Its a 1ghz athlon box, with miss-matched 256 and 128 memory
sticks in it.  Once booted to the livecd, nothing else works, even mouse
motions are sporadic & and even that degrades over the next couple of minutes
till its frozen.  Out of Memory or ??
