Mini tanking...

Tough week with my Mini...

Started with random, inexplicable shutdowns...

Then, by mid-week, couldn't get her to boot at all.

Got the three beep sound, then a blank gray screen.

Was able to get it to boot into Target Disk mode, clone it (phew), Disk Warrior it, verified with Disk Util.

Now I'm at least getting it to boot to the flashing folder with ? sign. According to tech notes, this means the startup disk isn't designated.

But I can't get into Startup Manager mode.
Nor can I seem to get a boot from the Installation disk.
Nor can I get a safe boot to finish.

Resetting PRAM didn't do anything.

The immediate question I have is, is there a way to set a machine's startup disk when it can only be accessed thru target disk mode?

Give me something... (the Phils sure didn't)

1.5 Ghz Intel (I think)

1 GB RAM

10.4.11

It sounds like your disk is dying.  At the least something seriously hosed your install.  Did you make any changes recently?  Did you check the console.log after the shutowns?  Can you boot off the install dvd?   IIRC you can set the startup disk there.

Three beeps implies your memory is roached:

Solution could be as simple as replacing your memory.

I think Target Disk Mode has no need for memory, which may explain why
it works.

There's no way to set a machine's startup disk in target disk mode.
But resetting the PRAM would destroy that setting anyway.  In fact, it
would put it back to the internal disk, which is what you wanted anyway.
