By ftping the openstreetmap classic icons from ftp.us.openstreetmap.org
I am able to reduce the unable to open file list down to one:

usr/local/share/icons/map-icons/classic.small/rendering/landuse/forest.png

While pre4 had world boundaries in
/usr/share/gpsdrive/mapnik/world_boundaries,  currently pre7 complains thus
> Missing '/usr/share/mapnik/world_boundaries' please install mapnik
> world boundaries, if error occurs!
while there may be reasons external for the change, it appears to me as
sloth.  In my case it is merely another symbolic link but I begin to
feel I have returned to Slackware circa 1989.

I am accursed among old code monkeys!

Hi Bruce

This is where mapnik should install the world_boundaries so it was changed in gpsdrive to use the mapnik install rather than having it symlinked or loaded in to other directories thus making updating a pain.

Most of the hard coded directories have been changed to use the directories from the packages that the additional items install into.

The forest.png icon missing is an osm problem and should probably be listed as a bug there.

Have you looked at using the install instructions here:

http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/gpsdrive/index.php?title=8.04_manual

It is applicable for debian based distros.

Cheers
Ross
