Misi-pawastik in MichiganI noticed that "Misi-pawistik" and "Misi-p<C3><A1>wastik" (escaping the UTF-8) are alternate names for both Holland and Grand Rapids, MI. This is apparently based on the Cree term for Grand Rapids. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misipawistik_Cree_Nation > "Misipawistik" in the local Cree language, means "great rapids" However, the Cree were never in Michigan and the "Grand Rapids" referred to in that Wikipedia page is in Manitoba. Perhaps there was a mistake and some data set had MI instead of MB? I have been to Holland, Michigan and I don't recall any rapids, Google Maps shows a river there but it isn't a big river, and I found no pages (other than automatic geographical namers) which mentioned Misi- pawistik and Holland together. For that matter, the only pages I found with Misi-pawastik and "Grand Rapids" together were for the place in Manitoba. -- Andrew Dalke <dalke@...> --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "GeoNames" group. Re: Misi-pawastik in MichiganAndrew You are right the alternate name has been attached to the wrong 'Grand Rapids'. I have moved it to the correct one: http://www.geonames.org/5964664/grand-rapids.html Best Marc Andrew Dalke wrote: > I noticed that "Misi-pawistik" and "Misi-p<C3><A1>wastik" (escaping > the UTF-8) are alternate names for both Holland and Grand Rapids, MI. > This is apparently based on the Cree term for Grand Rapids. > > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misipawistik_Cree_Nation >> "Misipawistik" in the local Cree language, means "great rapids" > > However, the Cree were never in Michigan and the "Grand Rapids" > referred to in that Wikipedia page is in Manitoba.
