You say you're using xsp?

Please run xsp with MONO_OPTIONS=--debug set, as that will provide line

My current guess is that you're missing a monodoc.xml file, which should
be installed to $prefix/lib/monodoc/monodoc.xml.

Which version of Mono is this?

> We use monodoc to generate internal API documentation. Our monodoc
webserver
> is ok, but monodoc is unable to load the main menu. Instead i get an
error
>
> Server Error in '/' Application

This confuses me. What do you mean that the "monodoc webserver" is OK,
show a message saying "Server Error in '/' Application". Shouldn't the
"Server Error" message should be coming from the monodoc webserver?

Further confusing things, there is a Gtk# 'monodoc' GUI program, but I
find it highly unlikely that it would show a Server Error message...

> I am unable to determine if this is a problem on the webserver side or
a
> problem with the actual documentation itself.

There shouldn't be issues with the documentation itself, though there
may be something wrong with either the
$prefix/lib/mono/gac/monodoc/*/monodoc.dll.config file or the
$prefix/lib/monodoc/monodoc.xml file...

Knowing which version of Mono is involved (so I can see which versino of

We are seeking volunteers for a quick survey on this topic. Any person

Hi all you mono guys,

this is really disappointing. I have noticed this very same problem coming and going over the last couple of months. And as of this writing, it's broken again. I don't think anybody can be expected to keep this whole body of information in his head, so I really need this to work. I am using MonoDevelop for some serious in-house application, but I am seriously hampered by the fact that I can't get to the GTK documentation.
And there doesn't seem to be anybody even responding to these errors. Sad.

the xsp asp.net test application provided when xsp is installed.

link to documentation: http://endurotracker.blogspot.com/

Content:

Summary:
Install and configure Mono (.net framework) on Fedora 9.

Notes: Yum did not seem to detect the dependencies of between xsp and mod_mono
if you follow the order of the steps at : http://www.inprose.com/articles/10-enable-aspnet-support-in-fedora-linux.html
You end up with fc9 version of mod_mono, but a fc10 version of xsp which is bad.
You want all your libraries to be a fc10 version.
Your web server, Apache can be the fc9 version.

Steps:

1) Install Apache fc9: yum install httpd
2) Disable SELinux,
from UI , click System -> Administration -> SELinux Management (
from linked article above mentions that from command line: setenforce 0
, but I could not get this to work)
3) Install fc10 mod_mono from
rawhide repository ( which depends on mono-core, mono-web, and xsp, so
this will can installed all at the same time in this step):
    yum install --enablerepo=rawhide mod_mono
4)
Grant permissions to apache user to execute and create directories
under var/run ( apache runs under user: apache by default), command
line: chmod 777 /var/run -R

5) After the successful install we need to configure Apache to allow it
to run Mono applications (typical usage asp.net web pages, and .asmx
web services).
In
this test case , we are using the test asp.net pages that got installed
under /usr/lib/xsp/test when we installed xsp above in the install
mod_mono step.
On completion of this step, we can open our browser and go to http://localhost/test to see our Mono Test Page in action.

   Edit /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf

   Add these entries to the end of the file

SimdRuntime.IsMethodAccelerated() and
SimdRuntime.MethodAccelerationMode() should be overloaded to accept a
MethodInfo of the desired method, as it can be ~trivial to get a
MethodInfo in a static, type-checked fashion, e.g.:

        MethodInfo average = ((Func<Vector8us, Vector8us, Vector8us>)
                Vector8us.Average).Method;
        bool b = SimdRuntime.IsMethodAccelerated (average);

Even better, this is _faster_ than typeof(Vector8us).GetMethod
("Average"). (Not by a lot, but faster nonetheless.)

AccelerationAttribute should be AcceleratedOnAttribute, and AccelMode
should be InstructionSet. I think this would make for more readable
documentation prototypes:

        [Mono.Simd.AcceleratedOn (Mono.Simd.InstructionSet.SSE2)]
        public static Vector8us Average (Vector8us va, Vector8us vb);

Finally (for now), parameter names should be more consistent. On some
methods the arguments are (va, vb) (e.g. Vector8us.Average()), while on
others they're (v1, v2) (e.g. Vector2d.InterleaveHigh()).  I don't care
which we choose, but we should stick to something and use it
consistently (`a` and `b`, perhaps?).

(This will be even more useful in C# 4 in which arguments can be named,
as changing the method invoked won't needlessly require changing the
parameter names...)

Just perusing through the Mono.Simd API, and one question (and a few
other suggestions) occurs to me: Why the non-reliance on method
overloading?

More specifically, many (most?) types have an UnpackLow() method:

        public class Vector2L {
          public static Vector2l UnpackLow (Vector2l x, Vector2l y);
        }
	 public class Vector8s {
          public static Vector8s UnpackLow (Vector8s x, Vector8s y);
        }
        // ...

Why do we require type qualification for these methods, so that to call
them you need Vector2L.UnpackLow() or Vector8s.UnpackLow()? Why not
instead use method overloading on a common type:

        static class VectorOperations /* [0] */ {
          public static Vector2l UnpackLow (Vector2l x, Vector2l y);
          public static Vector8s UnpackLow (Vector8s x, Vector8s y);
          // ...
        }

The benefit to this are twofold:

1. Documentation: the class-level documentation will only contain
   members which are specific to the given type (except for overloaded
   operators, but those can't be located anywhere else anyway...).
   Meanwhile, semantically equivalent operations would all be located
   in and documented in the same place.

2. Type migration: if the developer starts with Vector8s and needs to
   migrate to Vector4f, fewer code changes will be required (e.g. you
   won't need to change every UnpackLow() method call to refer to your
   new type).

On a completely different note (and to start a bikeshed discussion ;-),
why "ShiftRightLogic"? Wouldn't "LogicalRightShift" be more
conventional? We should also avoid abbreviations, so
SubtractWithSaturation() would be better than SubWithSaturation()...

Thoughts?

- Jon

[0] or some better name. `VectorOperations' is rather verbose, but the
name chosen doesn't really matter as far as this question is
concerned...

monoapi Documentation

After hunting around for a bit (wondering why my openSUSE monodoc had
mono embedding documentation but not my local build), I found that
mono/mono/docscripts generates the monoapi{.source,.tree.zip} files
needed to display mono embedding documentation within monodoc.

The downside is that these files are NOT built and installed as part of
the normal build process, they require special handling. And since
we've merged the monodoc & mcs modules for Mono 2.2, I don't think this
"special handling" will be valid anymore (particularly wrt the
monodoc.xml changes -- monoapi.source will need _some_ (minor) changes
to display documentation in the right spot).

Thus, a question/proposal; could we:

1. Move mono/mono/docscripts/* into mono/docs.
2. Change mono/Makefile.am so that docs is built *after* runtime.
   This looks safe, as mono/docs/Makefile.am doesn't really do anything.
3. Always build/install the monoapi documentation as part of the normal
   build process.
4. Update the RPM .spec file to install the monoapi files
   (necessary so that we don't "lose" the monoapi documentation between
   2.0 and 2.2.)

(1), (2), and (4) should be quite straightforward; it's (3) I worry
about; is there a way to "safely" use mcs-located tools from mono as
part of the build process? I *think* I should be able to use
$(mcs_topdir) and $(builddir) to launch managed apps, e.g.

        $(builddir)/runtime/mono-wrapper \
          $(mcs_topdir)/tools/mdoc/mdoc.exe ...

Though I'm not entirely sure if this is fully supported...

Thanks,
- Jon
