I work like this :
open your winform solution under linux, add an .desktop file to it,
ensure in project property, the feature "create a linux script/file"
is checked, make a right click on your solution , in the treeview, in
the contex menu use "Tool/generate make file".
So like that you will have now 2 solution :
- In the root dir of your solution : ./configure or ./autogen.sh
(depend of your preview choice) --prefix=/usr && make && sudo make
install
- Or Use my tool MonoOSC to build RPM and DEB of your software, this
is like that i deploy my win/linux app :-)

2009/12/17 Stifu <stifu@...>:

>
> If I understand correctly, you just don't want your user to have to type
> command lines to start your application... Is that right? If so, this isn't
> a WinForms question at all, but a packaging / deployment one, or something.
>
> It's possible to create packages for your app (so they can be launched like
> native apps), but the method depends on the target OS.
>
> Have a look at this page:

If that doesn't work, then it might be a bug.

Subject: [Mono-list] HttpHandler and 2.4.3+

Goodday

Last week I have upgraded my systems to 2.4.3 and one to the new 2.6, together with monodevelop 2.2. First of all, it works like a breeze! Very cool, and I'm very happy with these releases, and thanks allot to the Mono team! But, I do think I found a possible bug. Before i was running 2.0.1 and a 2.4.2-3. I created a HttpHandler system in which I can dynamically add services. One of these services is a trackback system for a mailinglist. The mailing has an url in it to an image, which is handled by the service. Such an url looks like this:

http://www.willow-net.nl/remote/trackmm/5,493,989/tb.gif

The idea is that "remote" is the httphandler, and trackmm is a dynamically added service to this. This service can 'decode' the id's, do some database action and reply with a 1x1 gif image. This works on 2.0.1 till 2.4.2-3. In apache i have an empty folder named remote, so it can send the request to mono. No problem here. Now i have the 2.4.3 and 2.6 mono installed, and I get an 'The resource cannot be found' exception when calling this url. After testing, i noticed that calling "http://www.willow-net.nl/remote/trackmm" does call the service, but when i add an / to it, it wont. So, it looks like, the newer versions doesn't allow any extra's in the path. Here is my httphandler definition in Web.Config:

<httpHandlers>
<add verb="*" path="remote/*" type="Willow.Cms.Common.WebServiceHandler, Willow.Cms.Common" />
</httpHandlers>

So, now its the question, is this a bug? Or is this the way it should have been working in the past?

Cheers

Peter

Were the bugs you mentioned with Mac OS? If so, try running your application this way:
MONO_MWF_MAC_FORCE_X11=1 mono yourapp.exe

You may get better results. It's worth giving a try.

I think GTK# is the most popular and mature alternative to WinForms that Mono has to offer (although it works better on Linux than on Mac... If Mac is your primary target, you may want to try Cocoa# or something like that). How difficult the port will be, I can't say, and other than the size of the application, it also depends on how nice the original application source code is (ie: whether business code is mixed with UI code, and so on...).
What some developers do is have an interface for the GUI, then use a different toolkit depending on the OS (like WinForms on Windows, Cocoa# on OS X...). But that means duplicated efforts / extra work.

Oh, and to report bugs, see: http://www.mono-project.com/Bugs
Once on bugzilla, pick: "Mono", "Mono: Class Libraries", "Windows.Forms".

Do you know if it is difficult to make a WinForm application developed in Visual Studio under a different GUI? Which GUI is better?
> --with-interp are pretty unlikely to work, as one builds Mono as an
> interpreter (is this even supported anymore) and the other builds the JITter
> we all know and love. --with-x should be automatically detected and
> shouldn't need to be told to configure explicitly, and I'm not sure about
> --with-malloc-mempools or --with-oprofile. I know what oprofile does, but
> I've never tried to link Mono with it. As far as --with-profile4,

The thing is that most Mono developers and users aren't very interested in Windows.Forms. Most of them use GTK# or other GUI, while WinForms is mostly seen as something to increase compatibility with existing .NET applications, not something to write new apps in (especially if Linux is your primary target). Also, the fact that WinForms is not only old but also proprietary (hasn't been opened / standardized by Microsoft) probably doesn't help either.

I may be wrong, but I think there is only one Novell developer actively working on WinForms support (Carlos Alberto Cortez), plus benevolent contributors. Add to that the fact the WinForms implementation of Mono has been restarted from scratch twice already (http://www.mono-project.com/WinForms#History), and you understand why it's still not mature... but it's still getting better, slowly but surely.

Anyway, people who care about WinForms (I do) should submit bug reports and patches to help.

I then tried the old DataGrid in 2.6. It works best in display but not in edit. And the operations seems unstables, that is to say that the same causes do not always produce the same effects.

I am surprised by the low functional level (this is not a criticism, just an observation).
How to view and edit numerical data from a single table? No developer has had this need before me?

>
> In moonlight there is no UDP support, so it is not possible. In 2.0 or
> 4.0 profile, you can implement UDP transport. But since there is no
> standard UDP binding, you will have to do it by yourself.
>
> Also notice that UDP transport channel will be simplex, unlike
>     HTTP and
> Yes and no. It is implemented, but I gave a quick fix to get
>         binary
>         encoder + HTTP
> transport yesterday in svn trunk.
>
> The same fix should work for 2.6 branch (I'll batch import WCF
>         fixes later).

>     Hello,
>
> In moonlight there is no UDP support, so it is not possible. In 2.0 or
> 4.0 profile, you can implement UDP transport. But since there is no
> standard UDP binding, you will have to do it by yourself.
>
> Also notice that UDP transport channel will be simplex, unlike
>     HTTP and
>     TCP streaming ones.
>

As DataGridView does not work well on very basic functions with Mono 2.4, I tried Mono 2.6. The results are slightly better but still very insufficient to achieve a real product.

Hello,

In moonlight there is no UDP support, so it is not possible. In 2.0 or
4.0 profile, you can implement UDP transport. But since there is no
standard UDP binding, you will have to do it by yourself.

Also notice that UDP transport channel will be simplex, unlike HTTP and
TCP streaming ones.

HTH,
It's possible to change the transport protocol using UDP instead TCP?

By the way, awesome new release of Mono, great work!!

Yes and no. It is implemented, but I gave a quick fix to get binary
encoder + HTTP
transport yesterday in svn trunk.
http://lists.ximian.com/pipermail/mono-patches/2009-December/163334.html

The same fix should work for 2.6 branch (I'll batch import WCF
fixes later).

WCF tests on moonlight will be hopefully done at some stage.

This is a know bug, it is fixed and the patch will be available in a bugfix release.

The workaround is to do a Parallel.For on a range of value greater than the number of core you have (16 it seems).
>>> Yes and no. It is implemented, but I gave a quick fix to get binary
>>> encoder + HTTP
>>> transport yesterday in svn trunk.
>>> http://lists.ximian.com/pipermail/mono-patches/2009-December/163334.html
>>>
>>> The same fix should work for 2.6 branch (I'll batch import WCF fixes
>>> later).
>>>
>>> WCF tests on moonlight will be hopefully done at some stage.

HTH,
> By the way, awesome new release of Mono, great work!!
>
> Yes and no. It is implemented, but I gave a quick fix to get binary
>     encoder + HTTP
> transport yesterday in svn trunk.
>     http://lists.ximian.com/pipermail/mono-patches/2009-December/163334.html
>
> The same fix should work for 2.6 branch (I'll batch import WCF
>     fixes later).
>
> WCF tests on moonlight will be hopefully done at some stage.
I understand from this that Binary encoding for Silverlight/Moonlight will
be usable in 2.6.1.
When 2.6.1 will be released ?
>> Yes and no. It is implemented, but I gave a quick fix to get binary
>> encoder + HTTP
>> transport yesterday in svn trunk.
>> The same fix should work for 2.6 branch (I'll batch import WCF fixes

<httpHandlers>
<add verb="*" path="remote/*" type="Willow.Cms.Common.WebServiceHandler, Willow.Cms.Common" />
</httpHandlers>

So, now its the question, is this a bug? Or is this the way it should have been working in the past?

Cheers

Peter
