I'm new to the list, so I say hello to everybody!

I searched the web to find an example of code to use OpenGL in a Winform
control able to run on windows linux and OSX.
I found nothing.
Am I missing something?

Hi Sam,

Well, I had some extra time so I made the changes myself. I also updated
the NAnt and VS2005 project files. I'll leave the autotools files to you.
Thanks for all of he help. Let me know if any other changes are needed. We
should also move this conversation over to the forums. Very few people use
the mailing list anymore.

Hi Sam,

Thanks again for working on the autotools build and getting TaoFramework
into Debian.

As far as the two requests go, I think both are fine. Let me know what
date/time you will change the examples so that I can adjust the VS2005 and
NAnt files accordingly. The directory structure annoyed me as well, so it
is a welcome change.

Regarding the Debian-centric autotools build, I do not think that should
really be a problem. I think it is fine to change the casing to make it
more consistent. The main focus is that Tao has a robust autotools build.
Since Debian is used as a basis for a lot of distros, the Debian-centric
build would be easy to port. Even RPM based ones could use parts of the
build as we have seen.

Also, I use Debian :-), so I can make sure that all the builds (Windows,
Debian and OSX) work.

BTW, Cg is part of Debian, granted it is in contrib.

Small reorganisation in examples/

I would like to perform some minor reorganisation in the examples/
directory in order to reduce the depth of subdirectories. More
specifically, I would like to rename the following directories:

examples/DevIlExamples/SimpleExample
examples/FFmpegExamples/FFmpegPlayer
examples/FreeGlutExamples/One
examples/LuaExamples/Functions
examples/LuaExamples/Simple
examples/OdeExamples/Basic
examples/PhysFsExamples/Simple

Into:

I suggested this naming convention to the Tao developers for
consistency with other .pc files (http://www.taoframework.com/node/432).

The problem I see with it is that programs that depend on Tao will use
pkgconfig to find the link flags but if some distros use lowercased .pc
files and some use uppercased the the developer cannot use pkgconfig in
a distro-independent way.

This one was cleared up for me by Stephen Apostolopoulos, they are not
inter-dependent.

There's absolutely no problem with lowercasing the package files, as
long as the final binary files have the casing (Tao.OpenGl.dll, etc).

curious about the rationale.

First, debian renames or replaces the .pc files to lowercase. Is this
desirable? It seems that whatever we do out to be consistent across
distros or the .pc files are useless to developers wanting to use them.

Second, debian separates the opengl and freeglut, etc. parts into
sub-packages even though they appear to be interdependent.

Third, Cg and Glfw are not packaged at all. Presumably because the
native libraries are not available in debian?

This doesn't appear to solve the problem for me:

/Gl.cs(11,1): error CS1024: Wrong preprocessor directive
/Gl.cs(12,1): warning CS1691: `1529' is not a valid warning number

So I think what I'll do for the first round is use the tarball debian
made and their patches as well.

Create project files for VS2005 (easy), NAnt (easy) and autotools (hard).
Then add them to SVN and remove prebuild from the the scripts. The
autotools/prebuild files actually move the C# code files around quite a bit
to simplify the build. I understand the need for this, but I would really
hope there is a better way to do this.

What would be required in getting rid of prebuild? Just the creation of
all the projects in MonoDevelop, as well as the script to build the
project using NAnt?

prebuild. Debian has been using it to generate the autotools files. Note
that debian also has a few patches to the autotools files as well. That
said, everyone is interested in geting rid of prebuild, so any any help in

Packaging for openSUSE

Hi, I'm one of Novell's packagers and have been asked to get Tao into
the openSUSE build service. I've run into a few difficulties. The
prebuild system doesn't seem to be able to generate a good autotools
build from the 2.0.0 sources available on sf.net.

If the debian folks don't mind I'd love to hear their experiences. I
notice that rather than the 2.0.0 release you've uploaded an svn
snapshot. Was this necessary to get it building on Linux / Mono?

Tao Framework is in Debian Unstable

Thanks to the huge effort by Sam Hocevar, the Tao project is in Debian
Unstable. To install it, do a search for "taoframework" in Synaptic and
you'll find all of the packages. Debian package information can be found

It usually takes between 2 days and 2 weeks, depending on the

I know the SVN snapshot I have been using is not very recent, but
it's the version we have been using at work and I didn't want to send
anything that had not been somewhat used before. But when the first
package is validated, I will switch to more frequent uploads.

Good luck at the new job!

As far as the debian package goes, Sam Hocevar has been working on it.
Hopefully he have a chance to get the autotools build working again.

I will start removing Prebuild. I agree. Since SharpDevelop and monoDevelop
now use VS2005 files, Prebuild usefulness has lessened. The autotool
generation never worked well. That leaves NAnt. I may as well write those
by hand anyways.

As far as my SDL.NET game goes... I never really got a new game going.
Someday I hope :-)

package is around the corner for Tao?

I've been busy at a web development company lately so I haven't had
much time for Mono or game development. I'd really like to get back
into it though. Someone contacted me about putting together an XNA
game with them, but that's XNA, not Tao! Definitely not the same.

Last I heard, dmoonfire took reigns with BooGame. He told me he
abstracted away the dependency on FreeGLUT, so that it could work with
any window manager (SDL.NET, FreeGLUT, GLFW, etc). Haven't talked to
him since though...

Did you ever get a chance to work on your SDL.NET game?

Tao SVN doesn't compile

Hi,

I just took a fresh checkout from the tao SVN. When trying to compile
the Tao.OpenGL I got following error multiple times:

"./Gl.cs(49430,72): error CS0117: `Tao.OpenGl.Gl' does not contain a
definition for `GetDelegateForExtensionMethod'"

Perhaps somebody forgot to commit all of the changes :)

I personally don't care much where the Debian packaging is made as
long as I have write access :-) However, since there are many people in
the Debian Mono packaging team[1], it could be impractical to have the
main packaging area in a repository where the rest of the team cannot
commit.

If you think however that the packaging information can benefit other
Tao users, then I see no problem with copying the information to the
Mono SVN, except that if someone makes a modification to the Debian tree
I may not notice it immediately and the synchronisation will be delayed.
Also I may disagree with a modification that is made to the Mono tree
that I would not wish to merge back into the Debian tree, which would be
another cause of desync.

Another solution is to use the svn:external property. That ensures
that the debian/ directory is visible to Tao SVN users and that they are
always in sync.

I'd be very happy to become a developer, all the more because I have
yet unapplied patches for gtkglarea-sharp, although I am not sure what
the policy is for cross-project commit rules.

As for the debian/ directory, it's your call: I don't mind any way.
The distribution packager's work will be easened anyway when I have some
working autotools solution, though.

debian files. I was thinking of putting those into the Tao svn. What do you
think? I figure that would give them some extra visibility to the rest of
the Tao team. We can also get you added as a developer. Should these files
be checked in under a tao/debian directory?

build and a debian package.

to use autotools on Linux. I would prefer to use NAnt for packaging on
