Problem viewing imode sites

Hi,

I have wmlbrowser and user agent switcher installed in my firefox but I can't seem to browse these imode sites:

It just give me a blank page or can't access at all...

I have obtain some information about the imode agent on these pages:

wbmpviewer 1.1.0 released

wbmpviewer 1.1.0 has been released for Firefox 3.5 on Windows/Linux.
(There is still no Mac version.)

Despite the increase in version number, this has the same functionality
as the previous version - it's just recompiled for the new Firefox.

Experimental wmlbrowser release

There's a new experimental preview release of wmlbrowser at
http://downloads.mozdev.org/wmlbrowser/wmlbrowser-0.8a1.xpi

This is the first attempt to adding onenterforward/onenterbackward
support to the extension. It's definitely not all there at the moment,
but some simple tests work, so I thought I would make it available for
people to test.

It's marked as being for Firefox 3.5 only - other versions may work, but
I don't want to go to the trouble of testing with them just yet.

The button is available if you right-click on the Toolbar area and
select "Customize". In the window which opens, the button should appear
(with the text "WML mode") - this can then be dragged on to the toolbar
and used from there.

Alternatively, the option is available through Add-Ons / wmlbrowser /
Options / "Tell web sites that the browser understands WML content".

Mobile style internet in forefox

Hi Matthew,

I am a support worker for a disabled gentleman who has limited use of his hands but who wishes to access the internet.

He uses a system called 'mytobii' which allows him to control his computer using his eye movements through a program called 'the grid'. This system does have various limitations, largely based around the fact that websites are designed for people using mice, where the mytobii system does not allow for this level of precision in control.

I am charged with trying to make this system as simple as possible for Pete to use as he has also has some cognitive diffuculties as part of his disability.

I wan't to be able to access the simplified versions of websites I find when I browse the internet on my mobile phone, only through firefox. Is there a way to set this option as the default? I stubled across your firefox addon but am having some problems installing it. I've tried installing it on several versions of firefox but none seem to give me the button on the toolbar which is shown in the picture on your add-ons page.

I would appreciate your advice on this. I think this add on has the potential to really help Pete access the internet.

I found that there is a Fennec release for Windows so I was able to do
some testing myself (although of course there may still be differences
against a real mobile device).

I took the following screenshots:

Also I found that a scrolling the mousewheel changed the font size. I
don't know how that translates to a mobile device.

by visiting the download page, and - the extension has been installed!!

Tested a first wml page and it showed up! The representation is as I
know from the desktop browser.
The wml page contained several cards and all have been shown on one
single browser page.
Fonts are small. Is there a chance to have them bigger?

Can you imagine to have the extension working like showing the cards on
different pages, the wml page will have the links for
navigation between the cards. Thinking of the way how Opera does that:
one card per page and fonts are adapted to be
big enough for easy clicking on links on touchscreen device (also with
bigger fingers... ;-))
Is something like that possible?
For the desktop version it is of course fine to have it like it is.

Will test some other pages this evening.

Hi,

I don't have a device capable of running Fennec so I can't easily get
this working. If someone can beta-test then I can try to knock up a test
version of the extension to see if it works.

Fennec: wap/wml support?

I have a question concerning wap/wml support for the mobile Mozilla
Fennec browser,
have been told that the Fennec guys are not planning to provide this
support for the
Fennec for Windows Mobile devices.

Are you planning to provide such an add-on for the Fennec on Windows Mobile?
This would be great and make the Fennec an alternative for the Opera browser
for me. Would enjoy to have my favorite desktop browser to be also my
favorite mobile browser, without wap/wml this won't be the case.
Think for mobile devices it is much more important to have the wml support
than for the desktop environment.

wmlbrowser 0.7.20 released

wmlbrowser 0.7.20 has been released.

The changes are:

* Improved the error page so that errors are visible if Javascript is
disabled
* Fixed a bug where some pages didn't display (bug 19468)
* Preliminary support for onenterforward/onenterbackward. These are
presented as form buttons which can be manually submitted. Thanks to
johnwung for the suggestion. Please let me know how this works out in
practice.

i am not sure wether u r the sole developer of the plugin, however ,u and yr team do a great job, hope to see it get a goog future.
about the not suppported "onenterforward" tag, if we can't make it work presently ,how about just render the target url as a hot link which could let user click to proceed the borwsing ? after all ,it is better than just display a blank page.

I've had some problems with the automatic update of the extension. I'm
not sure if there are problems with the update or whether my profile is
dodgy in some way.

The wmlbrowser extension isn't capable of sending SMS messages, so I
don't think I can do anything to help.

The MIME type for WML is text/vnd.wap.wml

As far as I can tell, application/vnd.wap.xhtml+xml is some kind of
mobile XHTML document format, which wmlbrowser does not support.

Problem viewing web content

Hi all,

My problem: wml files are displayed well if they are stored locally. However, this is not true for the very same decks when uploaded on my server.

Since other wml pages (e.g. http://de.wap.wikipedia.org/) seem to work fine, there seems to be something wrong with my http server, or its configuration.

I have already discovered that the server does not recognize wml files, and thus sends them with content type 'text/plain'. This cannot work, of course, and explains why FF first had displayed the file in its source code form.

I then used PHP to send the correct MIME type 'application/vnd.wap.xhtml+xml'. Unfortunately this hasn't lead to success: FF now displays the "open with/save" dialog box instead of using wmlbrowser. If I then save the file with a .wml extension, this local file can again be viewed without problems.

Any suggestions?

- FF 3.0.1
- wmlbrowser 0.7.18:
- browsing of local wml files: enabled
- offering wml to web servers: enabled or disabled (has shown not to
make a difference).
- web server: Apache 2.0.50; provider claims that it supports WAP.

The extension does not matter for files served on the web. wmlbrowser
looks at the Content-Type returned by the page, which is:
application/vnd.wap.xhtml+xml

This content type is not WML, and neither is the page, if you download
it, so the wmlbrowser extension does not support it.

http://wap.jamba.de returns files with the extension .do, not wml. Firefox does not know how to handle them and offers to choose an application for .do files. If I choose Firefox, I get the same dialog over and over again.
How can I get around this?

I have submitted the wbmpviewer extension to addons.mozilla.org. You can
find it at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8345

A couple of notes:

1. This is identical code to the 0.2.7 version available at
wmlbrowser.mozdev.org; I just bumped the version number to 1.0.0 since I
figured the extension was fully functional.

2. The extension is currently in the "sandbox" at addons. This means
that you have to create an account in order to install it. Obviously I'd
prefer to get it out of the sandbox and in to the public area, but in
order for that to happen, it looks like I need to get reviews of the
extension on the site.

So, if you have the time, and you'd like to see wbmpviewer easily
available from addons.mozilla.org, it would be great if you could create
an account there, download it, try it out, and give it a review.

wmlbrowser 0.7.18 + wbmpviewer FF3 compatibility

wmlbrowser 0.7.18 has been released. This released has:

1. Firefox 3 compatibility
2. New Latvian translation (thanks to Intars Students)
3. Help is back! (linking to online help now that the help viewer has
been removed)

The existing wbmpviewer release is FF3 compatible.
