NM G1 doesn't startGreetings,
In what I anticipate may be a sign of death, my Nord G1 will not start up. It simply displays, "Nord Modular v3.03" in the LCD screen and stays there indefinitely. Has anyone heard or seen this symptom before and is there any possible solution? I just used it for a show recently. There were hundreds of patches on there, nearly all of them are backed up, but I fear that this unit is dead. Thanks, -=brandon=- ___________________________________________________________ Nord-modular mailing list Nord-modular@... http://mail.electro-music.com/mailman/listinfo/nord-modular Members: use http://mail.electro-music.com/mailman/options/nord-modular to change subscription status, digest options, password, topics, etc. Patches sent to the Nord-Modular mailing list may not be redistributed without the express consent of the author/creator. ___________________________________________________________ |

Re: NM G1 doesn't startHi Brandom,
if the patches are backuped you should try to put the operation system on again. I don't remember exactly how this was done but you will need to connect the NM via Midi to the computer. I don't think the synth is gone just the OS seems stuck. best, Chris Brandon Nickell schrieb: > Greetings, > > In what I anticipate may be a sign of death, my Nord G1 will not start > up. Re: NM G1 doesn't startIf memory serves, switch off ...
and then switch on holding down shift and store buttons. Then switch off again. Then on and hope for the best. Here is the manual in case it has any further information for you: http://www.clavia.se/downloads/manuals/nord%20modular/nord%20modular%20v3.0%20(eng).pdf This page here has all the downloads you should require. You'll have to scroll down towards the bottom: http://www.clavia.se/main.asp?tm=Support&clsm=Downloads You can download the latest OS from there and hopefully reinstall it. If none of that works, I have an update utility to move from pre-version 2 to version 3. I don't know if it would help in your situation, though. I can send to you privately if the above doesn't help. But ... reinstalling from the CD if all else fails? Re: NM G1 doesn't startKofi,
I tried that sequence of steps. After turning it back on the LCD screen has the top row of boxes filled out completely and never progresses from there. In an attempt to load up the Editor, I have the PC In/Out connection hooked up and the Editor has "Still Looking..." as the software tries to look for the synthesizer in the Editor screen. An obstacle in getting the software reinstalled on the G1 is getting the editor to recognize the synth in this "broken" OS state. Any other ideas? The manual curiously doesn't have the Store+Shift trick (from what I could find anyway). Any other material to reference or try would be most helpful. Re: NM G1 doesn't startOne more thing...
I would also like to add that after turning it back on for the first time while holding Shift+Store -- it _does_ say "Update utility Curr ver 3.0" -- it's when I turn it off and then back on again that it has the array of black boxes at the top of the LCD screen. -=b=- On Tue, Apr 28, 2009 at 8:58 PM, Brandon Nickell <bbnickell@...> wrote: > Kofi, > > I tried that sequence of steps. Re: NM G1 doesn't startHi Brandon,
Don't give up yet. What PC and PC OS are you on? Mac, Windows or what and version? Does the Nord also do this when you boot it up in isolation i.e. as a solo instrument, or does it only do this when it's hooked up to you 'puter? What MIDI interface are you using? All that can make a difference. Re: NM G1 doesn't startKofi,
Windows XP SP2 and I have the editor set in Windows 98 compatibility mode. In both cases, the Nord Modular will exhibit the same symptoms when booting up, that is, it will never proceed past the "Nord Modular v3.03" screen. I have a cheap M-Audio Firewire 410 Interface. It should be noted that the last time this unit was working that the MIDI cables/interface are the same and worked fine at the last show that I played about a week ago. Is the expectation here that even with the OS in the "stuck" state that the PC Editor should still be able to see the G1? Obviously this is the obstacle in getting the OS reinstalled on the machine, so any help with this is greatly appreciated. Thanks, -=b=- On Wed, Apr 29, 2009 at 5:40 AM, Friday's Child <africanoscillators@...> wrote: > Hi Brandon, > > Don't give up yet. > What PC and PC OS are you on? Re: NM G1 doesn't startHi Brandon,
Sorry for delay in getting back to you -- don't have as much time as I once used to. It is possible to flash the OS, but I can't for the life of me remember, now, how to do it. Used to know. May I suggest ... since you must be desperate ... why not try downloading the OS update from the Clavia downloads page I gave you earlier, and use the OS update utility there. I can't remember any more if it refuses to run if it detects that it is already the current version, but that might work. I'll try to dust mine down again this weekend and try to root around in my memory for how to reflash the G1's memory, but I can't promise to recollect. But in the mean time, you could perhaps also try these "classic" remedies. These are simply to accept that something adverse might have happened, and to try reinstalling your midi drivers, and then the modular editor. Something simply like an mp3 player could easily have reconfigured a port. Worst case scenario is to reinstall Windows, which has sometimes worked. Midi interfaces not being multi-client has also caused problems, although this is unlikely to be a factor. I read what you say about the Firewire 410 working OK last time, but you do preface it with the word cheap. This is a case of patient detective work. Yes ... the PC editor should still be able to "see" the G1. When it is totally detached from the computer and also detached from all midi interfaces, does it still manifest these symptoms? Make sure absolutely everything else is working perfectly away from it. I really wish I could remember how to flash the OS. I'm sure it was possible to do it. Just can't remember. Like I said, I'll try at the weekend if I can't recollect anything before then. Re: NM G1 doesn't startI don't know if this will help or not, but I use the G1 editor in Windows XP SP2 (and more recently SP3) without putting it Windows 98 compatibility mode, and it works just fine.
Switching of the compatibility mode may be an option for you if you're having trouble.

Good luck!

Re: NM G1 doesn't startSometimes it helps to power on the G1 after you've opened the editor.
It's also easy to accidentally reverse the PC IN and OUT cables. And some MIDI interfaces don't work. Hust open the synth and loofk in what condition it is inside. Check all cables! Remove spiders, tea spoons and condoms... Sometimes it helps. Re: NM G1 doesn't startI played a ton a shows without out it since I e-mailed this list and
more or less gave up on it, reverting back to my old computer-based synthesis ways...fairly unpopular these days. I tried plugging it in again this evening, for the first time it read "Nord Modular" Powered it off. Shook it really hard (don't ask why). Powered it on, everything works. Go figure. I'll be taking it on tour with me.
