In this group of new paintings, Grigor Malinov offers an innovative thesis of color as narration in the telling of visual stories through a multiplicity of modernist layers and forms. Articulated color fields inform the composition of landscapes and scenes that become rich with counterpoint, suggestion, and complex narrative geometries, all elements that build a vibrant context for the figurative elements within. For the viewer, the balance of these visual components ultimately prompts a provocative dialog between Malinov’s real and interpreted worlds.

Individually distinct techniques characterize three separate but interdependent themes: the landscape/cityscape, figures, and still life compositions. It is through these apparently disparate treatments that the unifying idea becomes apparent; it is ultimately color that is the real nexus in the paintings, the cohesive center from which the work discloses its inner dynamism. In this way the work not only embraces the principle of balance within difference, but also forms the rationale for Malinov’s invitation that we reconsider our perceptual tools by seeing in colors.
