Natural unfinished woodHi Guys,
I am considering leaving the inside of the console natural wood, no finish at all. Seems to me that I have seen organs with no inside finish. Thoughts? -- Regards, Pete http://pete-theisen.com/ http://elect-pete-theisen.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Come build with us! Re: Natural unfinished woodI think you may want *some* finish on it. Leaving it bare will leave it exposed to dirt, coffee cup stains, etc. If you like the look of natural unfinished wood, I'd reccommend tung oil. It hardens into the wood and gives it a little shine without the appearance of a thick goopy varnish. The result will look unfinished, but with a little shine. There are numerous "Danish oil finishes" that are similar to Tung Oil that have coloring in them. My console is finished with a Danish oil finish. My console is finished with a Danish oil finish. Hi Pastor Paul, Coffee cup stains, on the inside. I never thought of that. I don't drink coffee so I guess it just never occurred to me. I will be painting the outside satin black to match the pedals and bench. However, the inside has all this stuff, in the way of a finishing job, but normally out of sight otherwise. Stuff mounted to the wood, wiring, power supplies and (eventually) all the midi stuff. Will tung oil do anything if it gets on the "stuff"? I don't want to take it all out, it was too much trouble to get it in. > I am considering leaving the inside of the console natural wood, no > finish at all. Re: Natural unfinished woodI'd say carefully mask around the "stuff." Be especially careful around anything plastic. Plastic and oils usually don't get along well. No coffee? Herbal tea maybe? Seriously, an oil finish will help resist stains, even stains from ordinary touch can build up over the years. Paul From: Pete Theisen <petetheisen@...> To: jorgan-user@... > I'd say carefully mask around the "stuff." Hi Pastor Paul, Heh, looks like I leaped before I looked. That is going to be a pain, but I guess if I have to . . . Not as though I have anything else to do. :-) This is interesting: "Durability Low level treatment such as boron is recommended to future-proof against insect attack in areas completely protected from moisture, such as furniture and the framing of internal walls of buildings. The timber is easily treated for all Hazard Class applications." http://www.nzwood.co.nz/species/radiata-pine Insect attack, eh? Carpenter ants, termites. I have a dresser from the 50s or so that is unfinished inside, painted outside. I have had it for 30 years myself with no insect attack so I guess I don't have a lot to worry about with the organ getting insect infested the minute I start to play. The *outside* trim of my condo building is frequent prey to insects, on the other hand. "Radiata" is the kind of wood that the frame is made of. Native to Monterey California, grown in New Zealand and exported to Florida. Really, really nice wood to work with. How about if I do as much tung oil (and maybe boron) as I can now, and do the rest as I service the various components? For instance, I plan to replace the Pentium II processor, motherboard and memory fairly soon, most likely in less than 30 years. Sooner if it keeps gagging on Puppy and the ACO pet, but I think I can work that out if I can just get Puppy to boot. If the motherboard is to be changed I can paint/treat that area fairly easily at the same time, I hope. -- Regards, Pete http://pete-theisen.com/ http://elect-pete-theisen.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Come build with us! If you can do that and you don't really care what others think or say, "go for it." On the other hand, if you are going to regret that you did not waste the money on the looks of something that few will never see, by all means, stretch your budget and make the inside look as good as the out. Hi John, It turns out that the "Danish Oil" that Pastor Stratman mentioned is only $7 and change. If I have any left over I can use it to fry breakfast pastry. -- Regards, Pete http://pete-theisen.com/ http://elect-pete-theisen.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Come build with us!
