Need some Mac info

Hello Fellow TSI Software users.

I participate in another group related to Dutch Oven cooking.

On that list we are discussing a software package that runs on the PC, but
numerous users on the list are Mac owners.

So, knowing that several persons on this list run TSI software on Macs, I
was wondering if those of you that are willing to share, would share the
answers to the following questions. Posting back to me off-list is fine,
unless others on this list would also like to know the answers.

1)       What type of Mac are you using?

2)       What emulator are you using to run TSI software?

3)       Rate the installation of the emulator (1 = never again, 10 =
Installs while you sleep).

4)       Rate the ease of use (use same scale as #3.

5)       Approximate Emulator cost?

Thanks for your responses.

Chuck

Before I start, one quick preface - you've asked for emulation
software, but I'm going to talk about virtualization software.  The
technical difference between them is pretty minor - virtualization
software runs another operating system alongside OS X on your Mac,
emulation software simulates an entire computer on your Mac and runs
the other OS on that.

The practical difference, however, is major.  Virtualization is much,
much faster than emulation - the "guest" operating system runs at
nearly native speed.  Unfortunately, virtualization is only possible
on Intel macs - PowerPC macs must use emulation software.  If your
users are using Intel, then virtualization is the way to go.  The
major virtualization packages out there right now are Parallels,
VMWare Fusion, and VirtualBox.

If your users are using PowerPC, they don't have any choice but
emulation, which means they'll take a *big* speed hit.  Emulation
software for PowerPC is starting to get hard to find - my "default"
recommendation would be Microsoft Virtual PC, but it's no longer being
sold by Microsoft and you'll have to find a used copy somewhere.  You
could also try QEMU, but there's a steep learning curve there.

> 1)       What type of Mac are you using?

MacBook Pro (Intel Core Due), iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo)

> 2)       What emulator are you using to run TSI software?

I've used older versions of Parallels (v2.5, 3.0) and currently use
VirtualBox.

> 3)       Rate the installation of the emulator (1 = never again, 10
> = Installs while you sleep).

Parallels was probably about a 5 (although that was several years
ago), and VirtualBox a 6.5 (however, I'd spent more time with
virtualization software when I installed VirtualBox.)  If you've
installed a Windows OS before, you shouldn't have too much difficulty.

I've personally soured on Parallels due to the frequent necessity of
paid upgrades - for example, Snow Leopard compatibility requires a
paid upgrade to the latest version.  I've also had mediocre
experiences with their server virtualization products, which is part
of what's put me off the company.  However, Parallels isn't a bad
product per se - it's just not my preferred product.

VirtualBox is definitely a tradeoff - there's no fee for upgrades (the
software is open source), but the user interface isn't quite as slick
and the documentation is a little less polished in places.  That said,
VirtualBox does seem to be extremely stable when set up correctly, and
the documentation is comprehensive if occasionally cryptic.

I haven't used VMWare Fusion, but I've heard very good things about
it.  It's definitely worth investigating, and I hope someone else on
the list can add perspective.

> 4)       Rate the ease of use (use same scale as #3.

Both are a 9.  Once you get either program set up and installed and
Windows set up and installed, use is trivial - launch the software,
press the "Start Virtual Machine" button, and away you go.
Installation and setup is the only real hurdle.

> 5)       Approximate Emulator cost?

Parallels - $80, http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/
VirtualBox - Free, http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
VMWare Fusion - $80-100, http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/

Of course, you'll also need to budget for a copy of Windows in
addition to whatever you pay for the virtualization software.

1.   iMac early 2008
2.   Parallels
3.   Rated=9 (don't want to inflate the ratings system by giving a 10)
4.   Rated=9
5.   about $70
Virtualization works!  I bought Parallels (rather than VMFusion) with my iMac in May 2008 because there was a Parallels discount/rebate.  The only problem is that to print, you have to enable the USB connection to the printer from within Parallels.  Until you release the Windows connection to the printer, you cannot print from Apple programs.  I found this is a USB rule: USB can only be attached to one device at a time.  The printer sees the iMac as one device and Parallels as another.  Not really a problem unless your spouse wants to print to the same printer on the network while you're in Parallels ;-(  A few months ago I found a deal on VMFusion and installed it.  VMFusion solved the printer problem by creating some virtual printer magic.  But about the time Snow Leopard came out I began to have print problems with VMFusion.  Troopmaster wouldn't print at all (said it was sending info to printer but nothing printed), Calendar Creator then began to print incorrectly (not the same as what you saw on the screen), but Quicken printed okay.  Weird.  Reinstalled VMFusion but the problems continued.  Now I'm back to using Parallels (just have to remember to return the printer to Mac-it's just a couple of mouse clicks).  All is well again.

I noticed that you can check assistant patrol leader as a leadership role in
Troopmaster.  I didn't think this was permitted by National.  Has this
changed.

ALL the leadership positions are saved in the boys history...only ones approved for certain ranks will be credited towards that rank.

No, TM only defaults the check the right way, you need the check box
because you can create new positions, and you use the check box to
indicate if that position counts. For instance when we were large
enough to need 2 ASPL's  we gave each a descriptive name to designate
what there duties were, these would have the check box marked. We also
might create a Patrol level duty position that does not qualify, so
the box would not be checked for that one. TSI just didn't lock the
checkbox on the predefined positions.

I tried Wine, couldn't get it to install TM.  It hung up somewhere, but I forgot where.  Used Bootcamp with Beta Windows 7.  Worked great, but I hated having to reboot with Bootcamp when I needed something on the other drive.

Now something strange happens about every other time I use TM.  I launch the program and then I get an error message saying that my password is incorrect.  TM techs think it is something going on with my AV (Avast) but I have it ignoring anything having to do with TM.  I will restore the last copy I make and that's what I've been doing, but for the life of me, I can't figure out why this happens.

Most of the data is still there, except for specialized things like when I added more categories.

Does this happen to anyone else?
