NetBSD 3.1 sysinst ifconfig error on SE/30

by Nuno Teixeira :: Rate this Message:

Reply to Author | View Threaded | Show Only this Message

Hello to all,

I have used NetBSD 1.6 and 2.0 series with success on my 2 SE/30's
using traditional method installation. Sysinst is broke because it
doesn't mounts partitions correctly.

For what I've read at NetBSD site, 3.1 and 3.0.2: "sysinst now
newfs'es and mounts the target filesystem(s)." and I think it does
correctly. But I have a biger problem in sysinst method on both 3.1
and 3.0.2 because ifconfig gives the error: "SIOCSIFMEDIA: Invalid
argument" on command: "/sbin/ifconfig ae0 media autoselect"

I will install 1.6.2 again because it is very stable on my SE/30's.

Thanks,

Nuno Teixeira

Hi,

input "manual" insted of autoselect

3.1 is also stable. :)

Hello,

Ok, your help solve network card configuration but panics with ftp
install when trying to get distribution.

I think I've read something  about ftp installation isn't working
properly. Do you know anything about it?

Thanks,

        Nuno

.... It seems that you are using inst kernel before 3.1.
As you know, Hauke Fath has fixed that problem. (Many thanks to Hauke.)
Inst kernel before Oct 23 2006 causes that panic.

Make sure you are using 'netbsd-INSTALL.gz' in 3.1 distribution.

I have two SE/30. One has 040 accelerator. 3.1 runs on them.

Good info for SE/30 users about "simasi... SE/30":
http://www.momo-chan.com/

I've changed C6(1uF 50v) and C7(47uF 16v) capacitors on three SE/30
mobos.
It makes great.:)

I did? I fixed the sysinst Installer, but until Nuno's mail I didn't even
know there was an issue with installing over ftp. Which still surprises me
a bit, since I did install over NFS when I tested the installer.

Is there a PR, or a stack trace online?

I sat down yesterday afternoon, and exchanged all the electrolyte

Hello,

I will try to configure my mac mini (osx) as a nfs server to try an
nfs install.

I have no BSD OS right know installed in my machines right now.

Can anyone test an ftp installation to see the problem?

Thanks Hauke and all who are helping me,

        Nuno

Now I think Nuno is using 3.1 Sysinst, I wonder why it does't
work ...  Nuno, could you tell more details to us ?

There you are... 3.0.1 is 3 plus fixes for security issues and fatal bugs.
For "practical purposes 3.0.1 is as old as 3, and a long way back from 3.1,
which has seen a lot of bug fixes in the recent months.

That's most likely from sysint trying to dump core to the install kernel
ramdisk.

It makes another: I see both the INSTALLSBC kernel and the installed
GENERICSBC kernel panic at shutdown.

I tried an install over ftp yesterday, which went with surprising speed
(450 KByte/sec, it said, but discount the slow clock of mac68k), and
successful apart from the mentioned panic.

Hello to all,

Good news!

I tried kernel INSTALL instead INSTALLSBC and I can get distribution
via ftp ok.

With SBC I get a panic like yours with 3.0.1. I get panic with reboot
with both install kernels.

I will install a full distribution today and then I will let you know
my results.

Yuppiiiie!!!!

brb

Thanks!

Nuno

Kernel panic at reboot on 030s

Congratulations !        I'm glad, too. :)

  ... I don't surely remember, in 1.6x, SBC kernel runs on SE/30,
not GENERIC. ( ? )  In 3x, GENERIC kernel runs properly on it,
but not GENERICSBC (INSTALLSBC).
I was confused at the first intallation of NetBD-3 on SE/30,
I tried it with INSTALLSBC, same as Nuno. ;)

NetBSD-3x is installed on my several kinds of Macs.

1) GENERIC (INSTALL) kernel does't run properly on 030s except
SE/30. Only SE/30 likes GENERIC, other 030s prefer GENERICSBC.

Hauke, please make me sure, have you installed GENERICSBC_3.1
on your SE/30 with INSTALLSBC ?

2) All my 030s get panic at reboot, includeing SE/30, and also
    SE/40 (SE/30 + 040 accelerator / GENERIC).
...'panic at reboot' appeared sometimes in 1.6z(?) on 030s,

3) No 'panic at reboot' on my 040s. (All my 040s have GENERIC.)

So, I'm guessing that panic is caused by something heavily related
030 hardware, not kernel itself. ??  Does anyone know the reason ?

Thanks,
Kazu Inanaga

GENERICSBC is OK, but it gets panic at reboot.

I found it tonight, sorry.

Yes.
I have some data with true time by SEIKO sports timer when

1) 040 Mac has a good clock except PowerBook550c.
2) 030 Mac has a slow clock. (why?)
3) It seems that slower 030 has much slower clock.
4) Not only in 3.1 but also in 1.6, maybe since more before ?

NOTE:
LC475 has MC68040, LC III+ has MC68882.
PB165(No FPU) has 1.6G kernel for DaynaPORT SCSI/Link-T.
Classic II, LC II has MC68882 and Cabletron EA412.

Cabletron EA412 got crazily slow time in this test,
because the kernel is not good for it. EA412 is almost
same as DaynaPORT SCSI/Link-T with suitable setting.

Not really. I've got a Mac IIsi here that neither panicked with NetBSD
2.1_STABLE, nor with a 4.99.3 kernel.

It's interesting, though, that when you bring down the machine with
'shutdown -h now', the panic occurs after you hit the "any" key to reboot.

The '030 Macs have an interrupt hierarchy where the timer interrupts have a
low priority, which means that ticks get lost as soon as there is any
significant I/O load. The Quadra 700 and later '040 Macs can be switched to
a different hierarchy which gives the timer interrupts higher priority.
Apple apparently learned from its A/UX experiences.

Powerbooks are probably closer to the '030 architecture - are there any
Powerbooks with a 53c94 SCSI controller? I don't think so.

Hello,

I always used kernel SBC with 1.6* and 2* with success because they were
the ones who realy work ok rebooting and shutdown without panic. There's
the reason y I allways choose SBC.

Now something change...

I'm working on my SE/30 right now...

I did a minimal (kernel and base only) upgrade (2.1 -> 3.1) on my Mystic
CC today, with no problems.  GENERIC kernel.

Hi All,

So, can I say "Our all '030s get panic at reboot in NetBSD-3.1,

    How about IIci ?
Does anyone know "my '030 can reboot without panic" ?

and, it's only in '030s, all '040 works fine at reboot." ?

I dislike to see that panicked (MMU fault) screen. It makes me
panic, too.

Yes, thanks to Bjarne and Hauke.
To avoid that, I do 'shutdown -h now' then push Reset or Power-off,
but ... it's not 'graceful'. ;)

Yes, that's a good idea, too.

NetBSD reads PRAM. When PRAM has correct setting, we don't need
INIT nor CDEV in MacOS, right?

How about 32-bit dirty machines ? IIx, IIcx or SE/30 for example,
we need MODE32 and Memory Control Panel in MacOS.

IIsi is 32-bit clean, a beautifu and interesting machine, I like
IIsi, too.

Very interesting. I'm expecting the next of NetBSD/mac68k.
