Been away from this list a long time. Haven't kept up with the news...

So, using Gentoo, jackd 0.109.2... is there a guide to using netjack
with this release?

i suggested jack1 for a good reason Michael. You said you wanted to use
netjack... then DON'T use jackmp/jack2; netjack isn't mature enough. use jack
116.2 if you want any kind of netjack 'goodness'.

but of course it's up to you.

best,

g.

a very short one: don't!
:-D

since you're a gentoo user, i assume you are familiar with building
software. check out the current jack1 svn, and
./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-optimize
the prefix will make sure the self-compiled jack overwrites any previous
installation (not normally done, but jackd will fail horribly when there
are multiple parallel installations).

one thing to keep in mind: on the slave, don't configure anything, just say
jackd -R -d net &
and one the master, use jack_netsource. if you run it without
parameters, it will spill out some help.
hit #jack after 1500 UTC and ask if you run into trouble.

if you're feeling adventurous, you might also want to switch to jack2
and help test the netjack port that torben did.

best,

jörn

from jackaudio.org:

"On behalf of the JACK development community, I am happy to announce
the release of JACK 0.116.0. This is an important release, because it
fixes all the problems reported with 0.115.6 and now makes 0.109.2
completely obsolete. Nobody should be using 0.109.2 within a few
weeks, and even that is only to allow for distributions to update. "

That was in DECEMBER of LAST year Since then 0.116.1 and 0.116.2 have
been released and netjack has undergone substantial changes.

for info on running netjack1 (not the netjack2 which comes with jack2
releases) see this: http://netjack.sourceforge.net/

Yep, I found that at some point after mailing to the list, so commented
on a related Gentoo bug like, why, oh why is that still in the tree...
*sigh*.

Anyway, built and installed jackdmp 1.9.3 from source, seems solid like
a rock. And, for Gentoo, there's a 'pro-audio' overlay which will bring
me package manager goodness... or more headaches. And version 1.9.2...
close enough, I guess.

Thanks for the replies!

Thanks for the tips.

It seems I can get a 'live' ebuild for jack2 in the 'pro-audio'
'overlay' that checks out and builds from svn... so maybe I can help
test without throwing over the package manager.

Meanwhile, seems I need to figure out what the heck is this dbus hook
and how does it work with jack.... Okay, I can tell already that I hate
this dbus thing... time to build again.
