Netbook Screen ResolutionHi all,
Just getting started wih gpsdrive and I am intending to run it on my Advent netbook. Very first problem encountered... screen resolution. My netbook is 1024x600 and I cannot get a satisfactory result using any -g option. What is the current status of this as I am sure others must have asked already? Thanks in advance. Re: Netbook Screen ResolutionJon,
I run gpsdrive on my old Eee PC 701 @ 800x480 res. It is a bit annoying that the display won't shrink below a certain limit, but there are a couple of things you can do (it'd be nice to get a response to your question from devs indicating a new display mode for netbooks is forthcoming, but hope this helps until then). #1 - the geometry options on startup (-g <width>x<height>) are limited by the display mode you choose. the default display mode won't go below a certain limit dictated by the layout. To really shrink your display you need to try the "-M pda" option, to change the display mode for PDA. The downside is you have three tabs, one for each major display section. Not so bad in most cases, but not up to scratch for me, #2 - The car mode (-M car) is only slightly different from the std mode and at least allows you to push some non-critical (for me anyway) information off the screen. I run a limited number of map sets (to keep the list of maps short), am running ubuntu NBR (so have max screen real-estate, no titlebars or window borders etc) and use the following launcher to start it - gpsdrive -S -q -M car -g 687x454 This stil leaves a few display elements partially off screen, so with the few extra pixels you have, you may be OK. Hope this helps.

The -g is not very useful for standard mode below 1024x768. I'm still looking at it but it may be a case of waiting for version 3 as I know it's on the list of todo's. -- Cheers Ross _______________________________________________ GPSdrive mailing list GPSdrive@... http://lists.gpsdrivers.org/mailman/listinfo/gpsdrive |

Re: Netbook Screen Resolution2009/8/3 Ross Scanlon <info@...> > #2 - The car mode (-M car) is only slightly different from the std mode and This may be designed to use all available space, but doesn't match my findings on a small screen. maybe because my max resolution was below the minimum for most screens? maybe because I am using UNR and it uses maximus to give maximised apps the special titlebar-stripping, maximising treatment? Dunno, anyway, -M car changed the layout but still left an oversized window that was too big for screen. Using -g still left some of the (e.g. compass) displays off screen, but allowed me to control the map area so it was always fully visible. besides, if I get the -g right, maximus steps in and removes the app borders and title bar and leaves a neatly-trimmed full-screen gpsdrive and no desktop. My experience may not be what you'd expect of the code, but I spent quite some time getting it right and can attest (in my situation anyway) that -M car alone is certainly not sufficient. I know the space problems from my n810 device ;-) that's why I'm currently working on a better customizable gui. other things you could to: - disable some of the buttons in the main controls (can be done via settings). - use keyboard shortcuts to hide the controls [M], or the dashboard [D], if you don't need them the -g options shouldn't work in car mode, because it always tries to use all the available space (there is nothing broken, it's the way it was designed...) _______________________________________________ GPSdrive mailing list GPSdrive@... http://lists.gpsdrivers.org/mailman/listinfo/gpsdrive |

Re: Netbook Screen ResolutionOK, well running either 'gpsdrive' or 'gpsdrive -M car' makes no
difference. It still spills over the edge of my screen and clicking on the edge makes it jump around. The best I have found is -g 800x600, which at least stops it jumping around so I can actually click on things, but does mean I loose all that info on the bar at the bottom which is bad. Is there no way to sort this out? Re: Netbook Screen ResolutionOk, I've been having a play arround with this.
I could not set up 1024x600 or 800x480 but I have done it at 640x480 and 800x600 to show how. Firstly here are some screen shots of gpsdrive http://www.4x4falcon.com/screenshots/ the relevant file names show the screen resolution. How it's done. 1. Start gpsdrive -M car no -g 2. Options->Preferences->Buttons and deselect the buttons you don't want. The first 640x480 and the 800x600 shows zoom and scrollers only, the second 640x480 shows scrollers and mapcontrol only (this is probably the best setup for most people). 3. Close the options. 4. Close gpsdrive 5. Restart gpsdrive -M car This should give you a full screen display at 1024x600 or 800x480. To Guenther and the other devs maybe we need to setup so that initial startup on small screens only has the scrollers and mapcontrol button active or remove the compass altogether when vertical resolution is 600px or less. -- Cheers Ross On Sun, 2 Aug 2009 23:21:53 +0100 Jon Reynolds <maillist@...> wrote: > Hi all, > > Just getting started wih gpsdrive and I am intending to run it on my > Advent netbook. > > Very first problem encountered... screen resolution. Re: Netbook Screen ResolutionHi Ross,
Am running Ubuntu 9.04 (desktop not NBR) on an Advent 4214 netbook, resolution 1024x600. I just did an apt-get install gpsdrive last week, so its whatever that version is in the repositories. I will check later what the actual version is showing up as. After my message last night I had a bit of progress. I was launching it using the command 'gpsdrive -M car -g 700x400'. I didn't realise you could have the -M car and -g options together, but this basically allowed me to fiddle the -g setting until the map was just the right size not to push the toolbars off the screen. So this could be my work around. Re: Netbook Screen ResolutionHi Jon,
You posssibly have not seen my later comments on this as below. --------------------------------------------------------------- I could not set up 1024x600 or 800x480 but I have done it at 640x480 and 800x600 to show how. Firstly here are some screen shots of gpsdrive http://www.4x4falcon.com/screenshots/ the relevant file names show the screen resolution. How it's done. 1. Start gpsdrive -M car no -g or use the -g you are currently using 2. Restart with gpsdrive -M car This should give you a full screen display at 1024x600 or 800x480. ----------------------------------------------------------------- You can also change the font size for the dashboard, lower status data, to a smaller value which will also give better display results. Guenther is currently working on a change to this so that you do not have to do it manually.
