Network interfaces down with no causeHi
I have a straignh trouble with 1 Endian Firewall v2.2. Since 2 o 3 days ago Red and Green interfaces goes down with no reason. I have see the network log and found this: Jun 26 16:13:58 kernel: eth0 link down Jun 26 16:14:02 kernel: eth0 link up, 100Mbps, full-duplex, lpa 0x41E1 Jun 26 16:14:13 kernel: eth0 link down Jun 26 16:14:15 kernel: eth0 link up, 100Mbps, full-duplex, lpa 0x41E1 Jun 26 16:16:13 kernel: eth1 link down Jun 26 16:16:30 kernel: eth1 link up, 100Mbps, full-duplex, lpa 0x45E1 Jun 26 16:16:36 kernel: eth0 link down Jun 26 16:16:38 kernel: eth0 link up, 100Mbps, full-duplex, lpa 0x41E1 eth0 = Red eth1 = Green When I realice this I have to restart eth1 interface trought : ifconfig eth1 down and then ifconfig eth1 up. The straign thing is that isn't related to network cards because I changed it today and it continues happening. Any Idea?, it's EF bug or something? -- Ing. Re: Network interfaces down with no causeI had this issue with certain NIC cards and some AMD chipsets. Went to Intel only to avoid this.

Re: Network interfaces down with no causeCertain AMD dual core processors and mother board chipsets had the same
issue. The Watchdog would create system log entries show that the links would go up and down or it would always be renegotiating the port speed. Forcing the port speed would slow the problem down but it would not get rid of it. In other cases, the on board nic for would not show up at all. The correct drivers for those AMD's were not included in the 2.2 RC3 releases and back. -----Original Message----- From: compdoc [mailto:compdoc@...] Sent: 06/28/2009 7:25 AM To: efw-user@... Re: Network interfaces down with no causeI use mostly AMD cpus for efw and this is the first I've heard of it. Was this info you found online, or something you discovered for yourself? Sorry, but I dont know who the team is that works on efw, so its always good to hear what to watch out for.
It would be helpful to know which chipsets to aviod? I do know that the majority of problems Ive seen and those that have been recorded here in this forum, shows that there are certain onboard realtek nics that are the problem. |

Re: Network interfaces down with no causeHello
Thanks for your support. I was wrong the server isn't AMD: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.06GHz with 2 realtek network cards (Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+) Today's morning I decide to change the machine with another, an old machine to avoid the possible problem but nope, it persist: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2400+ with 2 networks card: Ethernet controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS900 PCI Fast Ethernet (rev 90) Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10) I can't se a pattern or something that show me why the LAN interface is going down. compdoc escribió: > I use mostly AMD cpus for efw and this is the first I've heard of it. Re: Network interfaces down with no causeWhen I used a Reltec 8139 I had to compile a driver from the Realtec site in order to make the NIC work. It sounds like it is working in this new version 2.2 by default?

Re: Network interfaces down with no causehi
maybe we should put a hint to all (new) users endian is a linux distribution compiled for stability, not for supporting the "newest" hardware. security-updates are backported by upstream means: you might think you have an "old" kernel but this one is security-fixed ("backported") just to keep the same number in kernel & apps but: NEW hardware (NICs etc) won't work unless that new hardware is using the same "old" drivers/modules as already present in kernel if you have new hardware you want your endian to work with: ask the manufacturer to provide some input to the lkml & sources & maybe RHEL then: is this "onboard-very-cheap-but-somehow-works-with-Mx"-card intended to work in an enterprise environment? if not - i expect you pay 30 buck or more to buy a "working card" plz don't ask why endian, we or anybody else will/will not support xyzxyz-cards/hardware/protocolls on linux (or this distrib) endian is meant to be used in an enterprise your home might be your castle - but the security of your castle has some expectations on hardware (endian is producing for enterprise-level -- not home user's) Recomendation: every NIC which was known to work in (NOW - 3 years) should make it Why 3 years? That's just an other rec. But these modules are known to work quite good and are for sure either backported or already implemented in the current kernel.
