New ASUS notebook with sisimedia driver won't start xwindows

I just acquired a new ASUS notebook.  It's an X8AC series machine with
an ASUS k40C main-board, an Intel Celeron processor, wireless, a 320 GB
hard disk and no installed OS.  I've installed Mandriva 2009.1 Powerpack
edition and I've gotten everything but X-Windows to work.  This machine
uses the sisimedia driver.  I found a problem with the driver and
X-Windows (module version mismatch) and fixed it by patching.  X-Windows
still won't start though.  For some reason, the x windows start-up
rejects all modes and then complains it can't find any valid modes and
asks me to check the VertRefresh and HorizSync.  I've tried manually
specifying them, but this doesn't seem to work either.

I tried installing Mandriva 2009.0 on this machine and encountered the
same problem with the display.  I haven't been able to locate much
documentation on the sisimedia driver either.  The website of the
developer referenced in the error log yesterday pointed to a European
gambling site.  I haven't checked today.  I've attached my xorg.conf
file, the Xorg.0.log file and the stderr output of the startx command in
the hopes someone may see something I've missed.

Thank you and best regards,
Arnold

Have you added the PLF repositories (easyurpmi is your friend) and added the
Nvidia proprietary driver ?

Thank you for your reply.  Yes, I did add the PLF repositories and no, I
didn't add the NVIDIA driver.  Are you telling me the NVIDIA driver will
work for a SIS graphics chip?

I thought I had seen "nvidia" throught the morning fog...

First,

Make sure you have mirror repositories set up for your system so
you can get any rpms or updates needed.  Make sure you are
connected to the Internet.

As root, run XFdrake and see if it will do the job for you.

The "no usable modes" usually implies the wrong driver or a
mismatch between module and kernal that could be as subtle as a
different compiler used for each.

You might also go to Install Software in the Mandriva Linux
Control Center and search for a sisi kernel package.  If
available, that should contain a precompiled driver, compiled
using the same compiler used to compile the kernel.

Cheers!

There was a problem with the sisimedia driver that was included in
2009.1.

You should install
x11-driver-video-sisimedia-0.9.1-1.20090622.1.2mdv2009.1
from 2009.1 Updates
This should solve your X problem.

Yes, this is the version I'm having the problem with.  The machine is
completely current with the updates.  The problem I see is the driver
rejects all the possible modes and then complains it can't find any
valid modes.

To recap what I've done so far.
Installed 2009.1
Added the repositories I got from easyurpmi
Updated the machine with the latest patches
Ran XFDrake to configure the xserver
experienced the problems described above.

The error message I see in the console is:
An error occurred:
(EE) SIS(0): ***************************************************
(EE) SIS(0):              ERROR

Try to change some parameters

Thank you and best regards,
Arnold

Thank you for your reply.  I've gotten wireless working and I've added
the repositories I obtained from Easyurpmi.  I've run the "urpmi
--auto-update --auto" to get all the updates (what's up with the Java
rpms?).  I ran XFDrake and it set up the sisimedia driver.  I try to
configure the display and sisimedia/X rejects all the preconfigured
modes and reports no modes available.  I tried installing 2009.0 and
encountered the same problem.  I'm downloading the latest ubuntu distro
now and will try that.

Cheers,
Arnold

Dear Arnold,
The problem is that Laptops do not report their video parameters.

Try this:
1 Start Mandriva in single user mode. You are logged in as ROOT by this process
2 Run:  XFdrake when you will be asked for GraphicCard, Monitor, Resolution
3 Choose Generic OTHER VESA  or OTHER VGA, Flat Panel 1440x900 (or
what suits your screen), Low resolution and color
4 TEST.  This has a horrrible habit of locking up,  or giving an
overscanned picture about 16 times the correct size.

5 Keep experimenting as above until you get a good locked picture.
6 Next reboot should get you the GUI.

If not you may need to clear any files containing DUFF information
before you get a synchronized screen.

I usually am obliged to re-start the OS 5 or 6 times which is a real
pain - but it comes up in the end - sometimes saying 'there is a
driver for this device - do you want to install it?    The answer is
yes!

Ubuntu has the WiFi drivers (which Kubuntu seems not) but you may
still have trouble with the screen synchronization.

I hope this is of help.
Graham

Hi, I'm having the same issue on a Clevo W76S laptop with SiS 771/671 Mirage 3 chipset, 1366x768 15.6" 16:9 LCD screen, 32bit Ubuntu 9.04 with sis671-0.9 driver, not sisimedia, but the Xorg.log is the same for me. I tried everything I could with xorg.conf, but I think it's useless because the driver seems to be using a custom mode list :
(II) SIS(0): Replaced entire mode list with built-in modes
so it tries the whole built-in list, and :
(WW) SIS(0): Mode pool is empty (EE) SIS(0): ************************************************** (EE) SIS(0): ERROR: (EE) SIS(0): No valid modes found - check VertRefresh/HorizSync (EE) SIS(0): END OF MESSAGE (EE) SIS(0): **************************************************
I'm currently searching a way to override that mode list, or at least how to add my custom mode to the mode pool.

Graham,
I've finally come back to this problem after trying your suggestion and
finding it not to work.  Thank you though, I appreciate it.  It does get
a 1024x768 VESA mode working.  I downloaded the source code for the
sisimedia driver and have started looking at it.

Just for chuckles and not expecting much, I tried Mandrive 2010 (got to
VESA 1024x768 mode and everything worked except the sisimedia driver),
Ubuntu 9.10 (wireless works now, but I can't get the screen beyond
800x600), PCLinuxOS 2009.2 (doesn't even see the sata drives and puts me
in kernel debug mode), LinuxMint (won't even boot), Fedora 11 (display
problems) and OpenSUSE 11.1 (wireless doesn't seem to work but the
display is in VESA mode and is at 1024x768).  Fedora 12 comes out in two
weeks, so I may try that as well.

In the mean time, I have 10 machines to upgrade to Mandriva 2010, so
tonight, while I upgrade one of my other machines, I'll put Mandriva
2010 back on the notebook and take a good, hard look at that sisimedia
driver code.

Cheers,
Arnold
