Folks:

As I mentioned last week, we've been working on some new site features
as part of our switch to - for hosting - so I'm pleased to announce that
the new, dedicated K-3D forums are up-and-running at

http://www.k-3d.org/forums

You asked for 'em ... go get em!

Cheers,
Tim

It would be nice if the forums were gatewayed to individual mailing
lists. This would prevent segmentation of the user base and enable web
forum users and mailing lists users to participate in the same
discussions. I know I for one, will never participate on a web
forum;). They are inherently evil;).

I watch all of the the K-3D related RSS feeds in google reader, I can
see if anything has changed in the wiki, a forum or in a repository
with a single glance as they are also grouped in the reader and have
read/unread totals.

There are also RSS to email services, see
http://www.rss-tools.com/rss-to-email.htm

For two way interaction with the forums you would need to extend
bbPress, is there any extension here that does what you require?
http://bbpress.org/plugins/

I read over 400 mailing lists in gnus.

Right, so after you figure out if something has changed, you visit the
website?. You don't think this is spending alot of time on something
that could be dead simple?.

You don't agree that just getting new messages in a structured threaded
format in you favourite news reader is a thousand times more
efficient?.

?, I don't see any mail/news to web forum gateway here.

..and that's too bad. I've seen some web forum software that has this
kind of capability. It would be nice, cause then we can get these two
groups together. It's just a request and if it takes too much time for
you to setup, then it can go in as a feature request.

No not at all, each article in the RSS feed display in Google Reader
is a hyper-link, if you are interested you click the link and the full
article in on the web site opens in a new tab. It is just a little
less linear in that you hop back to reader with by closing the tab
with a Ctrl-W you never leave the web browser.

No, because what I do is no less structured and the browser and or
cookies handle the authentication on each site so one set up I don't
need to think about it.

Yeah that is a shame, well then the only other option is to
roll-your-own gateway, even then the sf.net repository lacks an RSS
feed. In comparison Bitbucket.org is a very nice example of web
application design.

Actually that is not true the repository does have RSS, I was thinking
of the list archives, http://sourceforge.net/projects/k3d/support they
don't have a feed.

Can't see any reason why.  I agree that segmentation is a problem, but
to be blunt, my solution would be to switch to using the forum for most
of the communication that happens on the mailing list now.  I'm
interested in hearing reasoned arguments pro and con.

Cheers,
Tim
