Hey List,

It's my best friend and drummer's birthday tomorrow, and he loves the
Victor Young ballad My Foolish Heart, so I recorded it for him.

It's a very humble (read: poor) version of what Bill Evans did.  Fans
of Evans will note that I dared not attempt the first part of the tune
in A with a modulation to Bb, I just stayed in Bb for the whole ride.
(Atte I hear you now - "Cheater!!!"  :)

I'll spare you the blogspam this time, as most of the post is just
words about my friend.

Recorded in Ardour and literally saturated with reverb from the Calf
Plugins.  I hope you enjoy!

Hi Josh!
I don't know the original, but I think if I did, it couldn't be called
"poor". It's nice relaxed sounding playing on a nice piano. Very bar-kind of
music. You certainly can play more than well enough to give this solo piano
without accompaniment its right. I love it and wouldn't want anything besides
it.
Give us more of that, it's sweet.
   Jazzy regards
           Julien

Very nicely done ... and not an easy song choice!

My only comment ... and this is a very picky nit! ... is that in the
middle of the piece you tend to play more notes with more volume. I
would tend (if I were as good a piano player) to play either more
notes or increase the volume. Doing both tends to make it sound a bit
too full/heavy. But, that's very picky!

Thanks for sharing.

hey Bob,

no, this is a very good suggestion, and I appreciate it.  playing solo
piano is a very difficult thing to do, so any suggestions as to how to
make it more interesting/better are always welcome!

Yeah!!! Damn that's gorgeous.

Can't go wrong with Bill Evans. He's like the holy grail of jazz piano. Those chords are so beautiful. Very nice interpretation.

Is that your Roland piano?  I'd love to hear it with the Steinway Old Lady Gigasample.

As for hitting the piano hard, whenever I did that, the teacher I've been studying with would wince and look hurt, and sadly look at me and say, "Why you mad at the piano?". I'd laugh, but if I kept doing it, he'd say "Stop! You're hurting her!", and he wasn't really kidding either. So, yeah, lighter touch is what I'm trying to learn too.

He's a huge Bill Evans fan, and his whole thing is touch and "temperament"-- or even, consistent velocity. He'd play a scale, and I'd look at it with aseqdump, and it was like the standard deviation of his velocity was like 5. A whole row of notes between 65 and 70 velocity, or whatever range he wanted to put it in. Incredible control.

Speaking of Bill Evans:

Youtube's got some great stuff.

Interesting measurement and analysis, Ken.  Something worth scrutinizing
in one's own playing...

yes, it is.  love that piano!

omg, thank you for posting that.  I love that tune, and that brief
section in A always gets me!  I would also be remiss if I didn't point
out Chuck Isreal's playing here...the one and only time I've been to
NYC, my friend took me to the Village Vanguard to hear Barry Harris,
and Chuck stepped in for a few minutes to say hi to Barry.  I had no
idea who it was at that moment, but Barry mentioned it over the mic,
and I kicked myself for not getting a chance to meet someone who had
played with Evans.

a lot has been said about Evans' voicings and his touch, but his sense
of time!  some of the most complex over-the-bar solos I've ever heard.
and another thing I love about Evans is his grasp of all of the
styles that came before him.  for example, I love his block chord
solos, very Erroll Garner.  amazing stuff!

we concentrate so much on this list on the complexities of getting our
systems to do what we need them to do.  I love that aspect of the
list, but sometimes it's nice sit back and focus on the playing.  I've
noticed an influx in music postings lately, and this makes me happy to
no end.

I sat in with a big band tonight and played like crap, so it really
did my heart good to see this positive note from you, Ken.  thank you!

Hi Josh,
Sorry for the delay. I was traveling last week and too busy over
the weekend. My loss. Lovely playing. I really enjoyed this. Yeah,
maybe at times just a bit heavy handed, and I'd certainly like to hear
it on a different piano sample, but it's really great work. Really!

Thanks,
Mark
