New snapshotHi all!
New ST-GTK2 snapshot avaliable at metamorph0sis.nm.ru. It includes some build fixes (and not only) and initial attempt to write native ALSA driver. It's not finished, not working... yet. But I want to realize some new concept writing this driver: it will ask ALSA about the output parameters (channels, resolution, frequency range) and allow one to choose the actual parameters among possible, rather than just standard defaults (44100 Hz, 16 bit, stereo...) Cheers! Yury. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Using Tomcat but need to do more? Need to support web services, security? GtkClock insidehi @ all && Yury,
at begining of gui-subs.x i copied the gtkclock source from gnome1. it works fine for me, so let us say wellcome back clock :) @ Yuri your last snapshot, and may be the other before, there is a problem with jack, enable-jack == crash, i do not know why, but i think it is gtk related, it crashes when building the widget, no metter what you want to show, very bad, i have no idea. Q: do we really need alsa 05, 09 support? is not alsa current stable (i think 1 enough). bye @ all miroslav -- SHALTEV.ORG @ http://shaltev.no-ip.org ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Using Tomcat but need to do more? Re: GtkClock insideHi, Miroslav!

For the next time diff against original (whithout modification) sources would be preferrable. > > @ Yuri > > your last snapshot, and may be the other before, there is a problem with jack, > enable-jack == crash, i do not know why, but i think it is gtk related, it > crashes when building the widget, no metter what you want to show, very bad, > i have no idea. I've already been reported this problem, but I can't still reproduce it at my computers, so I have no idea either :( > > Q: do we really need alsa 05, 09 support? is not alsa current stable (i think > 1 enough). You forget 0.4 :) (actually it still presents in the sources). Actually there is only MIDI support for alsa 0.9 (no input/output drivers for it). And probably 09 ALSA MIDI API is the same as 10. But I've found that current MIDI driver is buggy; it doesn't work where it must. So probably after the fixing this and writing ALSA 1.0 output (and then input) I've rise required ALSA version to 1.0. code clean?Hallo,
i want to list here some features, that in my oppinion are not really needed, but can reduce the #ifdef statements and the automadness: 1. SDL output - why should be that good? sdl is not a driver, just a library, so if we have native support, why one should use sdl?!?! 2. ESD driver - use sound server to make music?!?! 3. integer mixer and sample size limit == cheesetracker == nothing useful (nothing against cheestracker) 4. why we need libaudiofile and libsndfile? i think --disable-libsndfile == compile error, fix is really easy. but why not just use libsndfile? 5. how important is internationalization? ( no, english is not my favorite language :) ) 6. WIN32 code is definitive /dev/null ready and now another heretic idea: what about a single gui toolkit, instead of gtk, gnome and pixbuf. @ Yuri there is no sqlite module format, "SQLite is a small C library that implements a self-contained, embeddable, zero-configuration SQL database engine". best regards @ all miroslav -- SHALTEV.ORG @ http://www.shaltev.org ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Take Surveys. code clean => loss of universalityHi, Miroslav & all!
> i want to list here some features, that in my oppinion are not really needed, > but can reduce the #ifdef statements and the automadness: > > 1. SDL output - why should be that good? sdl is not a driver, just a library, > so if we have native support, why one should use sdl?!?! Jack is also a library. So should we throw it out too? I mean there may be some platforms where ST doesn't have the native support of the sound output drivers and SDL (if it exists for such platforms) may be only option. Besides this, if this driver was written (BTW rather recenly -- it had appeared only in 0.6.8) so someone really need it. > > 2. ESD driver - use sound server to make music?!?! See above about unsupported native drivers. I know one man using this because of the lack of native ALSA support and broken OSS emulation for his card. And I also know some persons using ST just for listening to the music, not composing, and they might use ESD as the sound server. > > 3. integer mixer and sample size limit == cheesetracker == nothing useful > (nothing against cheestracker) First, cheesetracker has both integer and cubic floating-point mixers (and in addition, with more sophisticated interpolation too). Second, for special purposes integer mixer may be required (if one wants to obtain "old-style-trackerish" sound, I know one guy who uses this). > > 4. why we need libaudiofile and libsndfile? i think --disable-libsndfile == > compile error, fix is really easy. but why not just use libsndfile? > At least for the reasons of compatibility. > 5. how important is internationalization? ( no, english is not my favorite > language :) ) For me (and I hope not only) it's quite important. > > 6. WIN32 code is definitive /dev/null ready > > Do you are really disturbed by the some pieces of code? Most of they can be excluded at the compile time using configure directives -- if you want to obtain small binary for running at 386-SX16 with 2 Mb of memory and 40 Mb HDD. And also with such kind of castration ST losses its universality. My opinion is that code should be thrown only if it brakes the compillation and there's no volunteers to fix this and no persons who might need this. > and now another heretic idea: what about a single gui toolkit, instead of > gtk, gnome and pixbuf. I advise you first read the appropriate documentation before asking such questions. These are _not_ three different toolkit. Now pixbuf is an integral part of Gtk+-2 library. And Gnome is some kind of superstructure which implement some functions absent in Gtk. There is no intersections and re-implementations between gtk, gnome and gdk-pixbuf. Rather this is a pretty example of the modular toolkit organization. > > @ Yuri > > there is no sqlite module format, "SQLite is a small C library that implements > a self-contained, embeddable, zero-configuration SQL database engine". > I know this, and for this reason I've asked you. Do you propose to store music modules in SQL database? What advantages do you see comparing to the storing modules as usual files? Re: code clean => loss of universalityhi @ all , hi @ Yuri
:) i did not forget jack, but i think of jack , just as a way to link different sound applications together, so jack should stay there, even if broken for now. sdl again, is nothing but a game api, so assume a situation, where a sound card have no oss driver, but alsa one, so as soon as we have working alsa, there is no need for sdl. i try to use st for semi prof music studio, so there is my problem with sdl, esd, integer mixer. ok, i do not look @ cheese src, but cheese can not handle my long samples. it sounds better, but that do not really help me, if the half guitarre is simply missing. more ifdef more errors and hard to read code. tha auto tools are driving me really crazy :crazy. about intern. sometimes i think to the something for bulgarian , but i really do not know what should be tracker in bulgarian ?! may be i have to take a look @ the russian version. as far we do not extend the xm format, we really do not need sqlite, but for stereo samples, humanization etc. ... regards, miroslav -- SHALTEV.ORG @ http://www.shaltev.org ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Take Surveys.
