New website blurbHi,
I put a new "introductory paragraph" on http://etoileos.com/. I think it will be more effective at getting visitors interested..comments/feedback? I wanted to give some concrete examples of ways in which Etoile will improve the experience of using computers. Does anyone object to using the phrase "Making computers suck less?" -Eric _______________________________________________ Etoile-discuss mailing list Etoile-discuss@... https://mail.gna.org/listinfo/etoile-discuss |

The description is pretty good -- thanks for doing that. I think it could possibly be tweaked a bit -- I don't have time right now, but I'll try to get you some suggestions this weekend when I have more time. I think we should also come up with some sort of graphic box for it to live in -- it feels like it just floats there as it currently is. > Does anyone object to using the phrase "Making computers suck less?" Not until we come up with something better ;) J. _______________________________________________ Etoile-discuss mailing list Etoile-discuss@... https://mail.gna.org/listinfo/etoile-discuss |

I'm not so sure about the revision history part. The average Joe probably wouldn't really know what it was or why it's useful. Maybe "version tracking" (or whatever MS Word uses) would be a more self-explanatory term. > Does anyone object to using the phrase "Making computers suck less?" It's not very professional, but I would say it appeals to geeks. It reminds me a lot of http://www.suckless.org/ I think the "read more" site needs some expansion on the various concepts. At the moment it has a very brief overview of the goals, and mostly technical stuff (frameworks). _______________________________________________ Etoile-discuss mailing list Etoile-discuss@... https://mail.gna.org/listinfo/etoile-discuss |

We'll want to tweak some of the phrasings and explanations to be a bit more marketable once we get ready to release 0.5, though, since then we'll be targeting end users. The point that is appealing, and we should communicate, is that a user will never lose his work - even old versions of documents (unless he specifically request it). >> >>> Does anyone object to using the phrase "Making computers suck less?" >> >> It's not very professional, but I would say it appeals to geeks. I changed it to just "Making computers suck less" rather than "Etoile, or Making Computer Suck Less" for now. >> >> I think the "read more" site needs some expansion on the various >> concepts. Re: New website blurbHi people,
I'm just starting to explore Etoile, think it's a very interesting project and seems like GNUstep needs something like this to really reach an audience. I'll post some of my initial thought and reactions (to the web page etc) soon. First things first though: the silc server. I'm sure silc is really cool because... something, but it's not the most inviting protocol to use. Fewer clients and not very good support. With Colloquy it's mostly fine, but I haven't been able to connect with Pidgin. I don't get joined into the discussion when I connect to the server, and in the room list there is little that seems to have anything to do with et. So if anyone could share a little wizdom on how to get pidgin to silc, please do. Btw: I'm a freelance journalist and programmer, and right now I'm mostly focusing on iPhone programming. I've also been interested in Smalltalkish languages for a long time, as well as functional languages. In general, I'm a great peruser of languages, but don't have much practical experience of actually building useful things. I've only been programming professionally for less than a year. Hope to make myself useful to Etoile somehow! /Felix _______________________________________________ Etoile-discuss mailing list Etoile-discuss@... https://mail.gna.org/listinfo/etoile-discuss |
