Newer libtool for 2.28 [some considerations]

Hello all,

I've been toying with building packages and I noticed that at least more
than one package is requiring a newer libtool, other than Pulse Audio,
which we already know about.

The newer policykit (0.94) fails to build without a more recent version
of libtool, I've re-generated everything and the package only builds if
I have a newer libtool installed. This newer policykit is needed by
gconf-2.28 in order for it to have policykit support.

I've successfully build a newer libtool package, so far I haven't found
any issues with it (I can upload it if anyone wants to give it a try).

As much as we dislike replacing Slackware packages, we might have to
start considering it for this release.

Anyway, this is just something to think about. I will continue to build
some packages on my own and add my findings to
https://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/dropline-gnome/wiki/DroplineGnome2_28_Salvador
in case anyone is interested.

Best Wishes,
-
Tiago "Salvador" Souza

Would it not be possible to use the new libtool simply to build, but
not ship it in the release?

This is exactly what I have proposed to Tiago at the time. We dont
need libtool installed to run a package.

The solution in any case is to use only the new libtool for the
packages that complain or requires it. Everything else should be built
with the stock slackware libtool.

This will minimize the possibilities of strange bugs coming out.

Hello Saxa,

Yes, I know that's what you have proposed. In fact I have nothing
against it, except that we might have to make some changes to buildall
or something otherwise I am not sure how build is going to work with
installing upgrading an existing package, building a new one and then
downgrading it back to the original version.

It might be worth the shot though, if people have suggestions on how to
make that work with buildall :D

I am all for it

What about if there's a build script for libtool so buildall will build&install it.
but there's only a extra package in dropline gnome so anyone who wants can replace it not included in the default install.

We CAN build stuff with it and not include it, I dont think that's a
problem. What worries me is that on buildall's perspective we might have
to do this manually, cause it will "affect" the other packages that are
built afterwards. Unless we patch buildall to upgrade and downgrade
libtool :)
