News Reader Question

by Mark C. Miller :: Rate this Message:

Reply to Author | View Threaded | Show Only this Message

I'm running Ubuntu Client 9.04.  For my newsreader I chose "pan"; I'm
hoping there may be other "pan" users that can answer a question/solve a
problem.

Whenever there is a reply to an article, the quoted text is missing and
is filled with the notice "< [quoted text muted]".

This makes it very difficult to follow the discussions.  I'm trying to
discern the question from the subject line and the context clues of the
response -- not the best way of doing things.

        1.  Is this a function of "pan" and is there a preference that
can be changed.

        2.  Does anyone have a recommendation for a newsreader for use in
Ubuntu that might better serve my needs than "pan" does?

tnx in advance

Type "q" to expand/collapse muted quotes. Or, click View->Body Pane and
uncheck "Mute Quoted Text"

I thought nntp died years ago.  Replaced by web forums (along with
mailing list) in which the moderators have somewhat control over.
idiots killed the news servers.

dead protocols:  nntp aka news, gopher, archie, plain text telnet
(except for local servers), and others?

plain static html sites are almost dead.

I recommend you use firefox to read mail from a news to web gateway
site.  I think it will be much faster.

nntp going down in the history books with aol!

Many others too many to list...

OVERHEAD and full of SPAM and JUNK, a good enough reason, no?  Also full

...snip

Ummm... AT&T, or any other ISP that discontinues usenet/nntp access has
*nothing* to do with the status of nntp and/or usenet. I seriously doubt
that gmane.org (which carries *many* lists via nntp) are about to fold
anytime soon. Nor do I think that the IETF and other Network Working
Group's are going to drop the nntp protocol in the dev/null bin anytime
soon.

I couldn't imagine using this list (and many others that I use on a
daily basis) via standard email. Instead I use the gmane.org nntp list
server and can easily switch between multiple lists at will. Perhaps you
ought to give it a try...

Regarding AT&T discontinuing usenet access... IMO it's a good thing;
sort of like the past days of getting rid of AOL'ers & when before
deja.com was sucked up by google.

But I digress... this conversation should be over on the sounders list
(oops forgot that nntp is dead... I'll try to find something appropriate
on the Ubuntu forums instead).

Data received since last expire (0400 July 2 2009): 384593486016 bytes

... 4.20pm, so thats pretty much in 12 hours.. hardly dying :)
Though, its usage has dropped away a bit over the years, plently of
interest groups still get a LOT of usage, and teh binaries, well, the
warez pups will never die off so it'll never die off either.

You can largely thank google for that, when you offer a service that hides
a posters IP, the poster gets the good warm tummy feeling of doing things
like that, if you unhide them, make them accountable, people can act,
complain and get action, people, will hesitate to play up, Google, the
biggest defender of the spammer and script kiddiez, doesnt give a rats
ass what there users do.

Nah, its been like that for over a decade, the alt.phrozen.crew  was always
a popular one back in the mid to late nineties, with all the attempts to
shutdown BT, usenet will always be around, the best way to do it is to
drop binaries, but there can be legitimate uses for it, so you cant really
do that either.

Many ISPs are closing down their nntp servers for cost reasons.
There are still many ISP-independent NNTP servers in existance which do
NOT suffer from spam, and porn.
news.individual.net is one. I use this and have absolutely no complaints
about the content...

hehehehe, It wouldnt surprise me, on our news server we filter and reject
all posts from googlegroups, your statement is so very true, the noise
dropped rather dramatically to (at least in the few groups I read) just
the usual harmless trolls.

perl, mutt, and slackware have very active groups.  I would say the perl
groups have nearly as much traffic as this list. nntp will never go away.

I still use Gravity on Windows, which is a far better usenet reader than
anything Linux has to offer, imo. I wish it worked under Wine.

I dislike pan a lot, but I keep switching between it and xpn.

What has a lame ISP's commercial decision to reduce its service got to
do with usenet dying?

By that reasoning, I presume you also believe that email is dead?

By that reasoning, I presume you also believe that the interwebs are
dead?

I'd get yourself an education to avoid a life flipping burgers. It might
not be too late.

without telnet the internet would not exist.

they may be dead in the mainstreams eyes, but they are still being used for many reason, even NASA is going to use the store and forward technology (1970-1989) for it's interplanetary network (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interplanetary_internet)
