Nikolai Atanassov
Engaging an innovative balance between traditional European painting
techniques and elegant modernist forms, Nikolai Atanassov thematically
explores a rich visual realm residing at the intersection of numerous visible
and invisible worlds. An interplay of the imaginary and the real is
represented by complex fields of color encapsulating figures, elements,
objects and entire landscapes to suggest a dialog between classical and
modern sensibilities. Ultimately the work embraces the unity of such
apparently opposing standpoints by negating the fixed boundaries
conventionally separating real versus abstract forms.
The aesthetic
forged by these paintings is at the same time resonant with a physical theory
of chaos. Expansion, reduction and recombination become metaphors visually
rendered by images that reduce visual matter to variations of explosive light
that expands over time, ultimately to occupy a new limitless space enfolding
both mythological and actual states. Fragments of reality become visible at
this moment of chaos, leading us to a recombinant view using a new visual
language of perception that is unfettered by the dichotomies of the past
About NOMA GALLERY
Established in 2008
in the downtown San Francisco gallery district, NOMA GALLERY highlights the
works of emerging and established artists from around the world. We are proud
to represent artists of solid classical foundation who are creating original
works with exceptional contemporary and conceptual power. Through its
exhibitions, the gallery seeks to unite disparate visions emergent from
different cultures, and to spark dialogues engaging variant expressions and
energies. By producing a strong museum-quality program of original paintings,
drawings, sculpture, prints and photography, we strive to create a continuous
dialogue with both local and global communities, together contributing to the
forefront of the art world. We are engaging in relationships with galleries,
museums and other institutions around the world to create a diverse, truly
international environment for supporting the contemporary arts.
NOMA GALLERY would in particular like to thank the visitors who attend
our exhibitions and programs. Thoughtful and interested viewers are what make
galleries thrive. We sincerely encourage all of you to enjoy our shows and
programs in the coming season.
