Not detecting when gpsd has achieved lock

I have updated GPSdrive a few weeks ago for the first time in perhaps a year.
Now it seems, it does not detect that gpsd (2.39) has achieved lock and has a position. Gpsd has been started before GPSdrive, yet I often have to restart GPSdrive after gpsd has triangulated a position (based on querying the daemon in telnet). Or is it taking a very long time?

Running Gentoo Linux and Mapnik with OSM.

you can use xgps to check if gpsd really got a fix.
