OB8 HELP!!! URGENT!

Dear friends,
I stupidly, as a newbie, bought a OB8 for a friend that seemed to work  
properly when I checked it .
At my return home, I switched it on, tried to save some patches and,  
immediately, all the memories were erased. Moreover, now only the  
lower voice board is heard. The upper has the leds switched on  
sequentially but no sound.
At a more careful check, the U17 IC (RAM) is MISSING!

I have tried to save some patches in the machine, they seem to work.

What happened? Did I have a ripoff? Is the U17 missing normal ?

I have no service manual

Please help me asap, my friend will not pay my money back...

the best thing to do would be to grab the schematics here:

http://home.swipnet.se/cfmd/synths/companies/oberheim/

identify what U17 IC is; just look at the page of the board that it is on. plug that in to a search at mouser.com, and see what comes up. very good chance its still available.

Relax. First of all you bought an amazing and rare machine. How much did you pay ?

I bought an OBXa a couple of years ago, which was dead. I had it totally restored as you can read in my KSS thread.

I would like to thank all of you helping me, replying so promptly.
As sugested, I began my work replacing the battery, reconnecting the  
connectors, cleaning the machine up. Now IT WORKS FINE.

BTW to whom it may concern in the future, the U17  IC (RAM) can be  
missing, at least  in some versions. Perhaps the socket had been left  
on the board for possible future expansions...

I have to point out again that AH is a GREAT list of friendly, expert  
and keen gentlemen! I have been in for about 15 years now and would  
never leave it.
