Vitaliy, I seem to remember you were selling bluetooth modules at one
time? Is my mind playing tricks on me with my old age or am I correct
because I can't seem to find them on your web site?

Clint, you're probably thinking about this:

http://www.btdongles.com/products/index.php/stm4100-low-profile-bluetooth-to-uart-module.html

We're actually in the process of moving (copying) it and some of the
products from OBD2Cables.com to the main ScanTool.net site.

The problem used to be that we had to build them in-house and our demand was
higher than our production capacity. Recently (literally, a few days ago) we
were finally able to optimize the process to the point where we can
comfortably build a few hundred of these a day.

The plan is to drop the price per module to $40 or so.

Best regards,

Low cost bluetooth module, deal or no deal?

by Funny N. :: Rate this Message:

I remember seeing someone post a link before, about "ELM327 based bluetooth module" at a very low cost at DX (http://www.dealextreme.com/) here at PIClist, don't remember what it is called. You should be able to Google it and dig it out. (It is quite interesing, DX is a Hongkong registered company, but their web server is hosted in the USA. The 2nd place I saw people mentioned DX is at SparkFun forum.)

After some quick search on bluetooth module at that web site, I am just curious how come they sell a bluetooth module for "US$ 2.47 and shipping included".

Here in USA and Canada, a regular air shipping starts from US$6-7.

I will feel so sad if someone tells me this is true. How come the USA and Canada shipping system post such a high overhead to regular citizens/businesses who lives here.

Is this a real deal? Good deal? Bad deal? Finger crossed. (those reviews seem very positive.)

Here is the info:
"Super Mini Bluetooth 2.0 Adapter Dongle (Vista Compatible)
Price: $2.47 "

And the web link:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.11866

No idea, but I just placed an order. There is absolutely no way they can be
making money on this, so I'll try to figure out what the catch is.

AFAIK shipping is even more expensive in Europe. I think it is actually
quite reasonable, and it doesn't make any sense to subsidize the post
office. If you ship a lot of packages, why should your neighbors bear the
burden?

We'll see, thanks for the link. It really seems too good to be true.

How can you be sure it's the same unit?

We have a bunch of Bluetooth dongles, many of which look the same, but use
different chipsets.

Hi, Francois
It is good to hear. So the wireless technology can make staff so small these days.
I am curious what are you using with those USB bluetooth dongle these days? I knew one of the purpose for bluetooth is replacing the RS232 cable.

1. Is this the main purpose for using bluetooth.
2. For cell phone, people uses bluetooth for mainly voice. But these USB bluetooth dongle need a PC, right?

Vitaliy,
Please keep us posted for what you found. Thanks.
That web site just sounds like a "Web edition of Wal-mart" to local mum-papa stores. Those deals really look too good to be true.

Another DX products I saw people discussing on SparkFun forum are Solder machines (ceramic heating element, temperature controlled stations and hot-air stations.), either a clone or over-manufactured Hakko models with only 1/3 to half of the Hakko price. SparkFun also carries some variation of those Hakko clones on its store.

It seems the world is changing fast these days.

Deal Extreme actually have a pretty good reputation.
They aren't particularly fast in terms of getting your order together
but with few exceptions they seem to get the job done.

Theres over 12 threads (not pages, threads, each thread is about 20
pages) of people talking about DX on whirlpool (Australian broadband
forum) that with one or 2 exceptions have been generally positive.

Even when something comes in broken or wrong emailing their support dept
seems to get a response within 24 hours and usually another item shipped
as a replacement.

I buy some stuff from them. So far no problem, in the end I always get
what I payed for, but it can take them some time (a few months in some
case) to deliver everything. A 10-line order can arrive in 10
installments. I guess they have a good arrangement with a shipping company.

It does but it's not, I've used Dealextreme many times, their customer
service is good too, replacement of goods that were damaged in transit
was quibble free and fast.

If you opt for the free shipping then it can take a week to ten days to
arrive in the UK, obviously this may be different for the US.

Thanks to Clint, Wouter, Jake and many other member's quick response for confirm this is real deals.

I just got my order placed. Hopeful will receive my items in a few weeks. Agree to many of you, for the low price, it is worth to wait for a bit longer for the air package arriving.

I have used dealExtreme about half a dozen time thus far. Not spent a lot
though. Only catch is shipping ( 3 weeks) unless you take the EMS option (
$18 up I think). I have bought mp3 players, high temp tape, SD cards, SD
card readers, solder paste etc. You can get a SD card reader for $1.50 and
hack the guts and use the connector on you SD's. With shipping. Beats
anything else I found so far. Starting the car is more expensive than buying
from them.

One bad product was a USB HD case -'IBM' branded - psu giving out 6.66V
instead of 5v/12V to the hard drive. RMA'ed them and they said they will
send a replacement for $6 to cover the postage. I said no thanks ( it is 8
weeks down the line since I received the product and I did not bother to use
it same time) and they offered my money back.

Overall, I am happy with them.
