OFLC wants to censor mobile games?Everyone/Anyone heard about this: http://www.itnews.com.au/News/158652,classification-board-seeks-to-censor-iphone-apps.aspx
Someone mentioned that it's only a matter of time before they want to start reviewing Indie games, so does anyone know what the costs are for that? I'll poke my friend at MSFT and find out if there are any implications for XBox Indie games. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: pigmi-unsubscribe@... Re: OFLC wants to censor mobile games? Our response will be to just not sell in AU. So much for
Australian-content-for-Australians! AU is a small proportion of our sales, it would never be cost efficient for us to pay $2k to get a classification in AU per game/app. Would be annoying that our friends locally couldn't buy it, but commercially-speaking it would be a no-brainer for us. Pull them all from the AU store. As though Apple's own ratings system isn't stricter than anything the OLFC would do. We had to cover the nipples in classical paintings in our first app :P The end result will be the near-complete removal of inde-apps from the AU store. Good one, OLFC. Why is AU the only country in the world that does this sort of thing? *sigh* meow & ciao, kat black =^..^= http://illumiQ.com for iPhone http://LittleWhiteBook.net for iPhone http://BallofQ.com for iPhone 2009/10/23 Andy Dent <dent@...>: > > On 23/10/2009, at 12:21 PM, Brendan Ragan wrote: > >> Everyone/Anyone heard about this: >> http://www.itnews.com.au/News/158652,classification-board-seeks-to-censor-iphone-apps.aspx >> >> Someone mentioned that it's only a matter of time before they want to >> start reviewing Indie games, so does anyone know what the costs are for >> that? > > The Register article said $2K/game. > > :-( > > --------------------------------------------------------------------- > To unsubscribe, e-mail: pigmi-unsubscribe@... > For additional commands, e-mail: pigmi-help@... > > --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: pigmi-unsubscribe@... RE: OFLC wants to censor mobile games? This is getting insane.
"I'll poke my friend at MSFT and find out if there are any implications for XBox Indie games." My understanding is that the classification issue is the reason people can't buy Xbox Indie Games in Australia. MSFT would either have to cover the cost of every game that gets submitted to the service (about 500 so far), or pass the cost on to developers. *sigh* -----Original Message----- From: Brendan Ragan [mailto:lordmortis@...] Sent: Friday, 23 October 2009 12:22 PM To: pigmi@... Re: OFLC wants to censor mobile games?I have a few points to make:
First of all, it's the Classification Board, not the OFLC. The OFLC are no more, yet so many people continue to refer to them! I'm sorry, but they are gone. Secondly, they're not trying to "censor" mobile games, they're trying to *classify* them. This is a huge difference and it is after all their job to be doing this. It is important that games be classified: parents for example, should be concerned that if they give their child an iPhone they could easily download "Sex Facts" or "Bikini Babes Daily", or other content that children shouldn't be downloading. Ratings are important! The cost of getting a game rated is ludicrous to be sure and no doubt if that cost is passed onto the developer then we will see some serious ramifications. But let's not get our interknickers in a twist just yet: "Classification Board seeks to classify mobile games" is hardly something to get shocked about. If they gain the right to classify them, what happens a) to Apple's use of similar classification terms on the App Store? b) to unclassified games? If "unclassified" == unable to be marketed, then a "classification" process is "censorship by stealth". it's a bit like that "Heart Foundation's health tick of approval" scam - the tick on a product means that you passed their guidelines AND you paid a substantial sum for the right to use the tick. It does not imply that food lacking the tick fails the guidelines (according to my wife who works for the health department). Apple's most likely reaction, given their behaviour in other countries, is to pull the Australian App Store games section, if they can't list unclassified games. It's just too hard for them to weave that into the process and they would have to force all developers of all the existing games to go through that just for the Aussie store, which means 99% of the content would vanish - I don't see them running just an Australian desert! --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: pigmi-unsubscribe@... RE: OFLC wants to censor mobile games?Yep, that's exactly what will happen if this goes through. In South Africa, the App Store has no games section precisely because games have to be classified by the South African government, and because it costs too much for the games to go through this classification (it's worth noting that it only costs 5000R in South Africa, which is around $720 AUS -- a lot less than the previously mentioned $2k). It's not censorship, per se, and I'm sure that's not what the Classification board is trying to achieve, but that will be the end result. > From: dent@... > To: pigmi@... > Date: Sun, 25 Oct 2009 10:40:40 +0800 > Subject: Re: [PIGMI] OFLC wants to censor mobile games? > > > On 24/10/2009, at 7:42 PM, Tim wrote: > > > Secondly, they're not trying to "censor" mobile games, they're > > trying to *classify* them. > > If they gain the right to classify them, what happens > a) to Apple's use of similar classification terms on the App Store? > b) to unclassified games? > > If "unclassified" == unable to be marketed, then a "classification" > process is "censorship by stealth". it's a bit like that "Heart > Foundation's health tick of approval" scam - the tick on a product > means that you passed their guidelines AND you paid a substantial sum > for the right to use the tick.
