OSM usage in commercial apps.

Hy everybody,

Our company is planning to use Marble widget in commercial product. As you know Marble is licensed under LGPL v2 license, that permits its usage in commercial closed source apps. I have a question ... is it possible to use open street maps data together with Marble in such application not breaking any legal rights (meeting Creative Commons license)? Thanks for your answears.

Best regards
Algirdas M.

Dear Algirdas,

The ccbysa license allows commercial use.  Your obligation is to
credit OpenStreetMap to satisfy the "BY" requirement.  Please see the
wiki for specific examples of proper credit.

The "Share Alike" obligation is slightly more complex.  As long as you
are using _unchanged OSM data_ Share Alike places no additional
obligation on you.  Can you share any more details so that we can be
more specific?

Best regards,
Richard

Rule of thumb: if you're using OpenStreetMap *MAPS*, you only need to
attribute. If you're using OpenStreetMap *DATA*, share-alike applies on the
modifications you make to that data, or on the data you add on top of it.

As you'll be using the Marble widget, I guess that you'll be using just the
unmodified mapnik rendering of the OSM map and plot some points (or stuff) on
top, or move the map on some event, or something like that. In that case,
just attribute Marble and OSM and you're fine.
