Museum professionals often profess a love of objects, which they strive to pass on to audiences through their work.

In his talk at a recent conference, Kevin Slavin from the mobile game developer Area/Code treats Objectophilia as prophecy rather than pathology.   Using as examples a woman’s marriage to the Berlin Wall, a twittering London Bridge, network-aware Taco Trucks, (not to mention shoes, balls, and plants), and a stuffed otter living a double life, Slavin looks somewhat cheekily at how digital networks can imbue objects with behaviors normally attributable to human beings..

Fast forward to about 1:20 in order to avoid the customary introductions.

Cheers,

- Carl

Wow!

This talk is absolutely fascinating. And frankly, a bit disturbing...

Yep.  The scariest presentations are often ones in which presenter and
audience are gleefully unaware of the scariness.  Rest assured that
Kevin's in on the joke (he's also a professor at NYU).

Advertising and marketing professionals are charged with creating
instense though subliminal bonds between people and brands via the
physical and digital embodiments of these brands. This practice is a
driving force behind the development of technologies and digitally
driven experiences in the pubic sphere.

Our visitors are bringing their expectations of and associations with
mobile and digital media into our environments.  How do we, as purveyors
of  beneficial relationships between people and objects (or among people
through objects) react to, exploit, or subvert these expectations in a
constructive, or at least non-destructive manner?

Sorry, end of day and lack of food makes me more unintelligible the I
already am.

- Carl
