How does Enblend compare to Smartblend?  I dropped over to their website, and noticed a *.zip to download but no tar.gz.  Is smartblend only windows binary?  I might be interested in giving smartblend a try if I could get it on Linux.

you can run smartblend on Linux with wine.

IIRC the zip file contains a binary, no source code. At some point
Michael Norel, the author, said something about releasing it open
source. I have not heard from him since.

I look forward to a comparison of Lukáš' deghosting does on the same images

Almost.  If you notice on the link provided on the wiki, there is a comparison of Enblend and Smartblend.  It would appear that smartblend has better color smoothing capablities.  I'm aware that this may be an older version of Enblend and currently don't have the Windows capability to do a side by side comparision.

When I've used Enblend in the past, I've noticed the same type of artifacts from the "ghosting" before such as noted on the rock in the link provided below.  Perhaps with a newer enblend and Lukas's ghosting, the same effect can be achieved now.  I haven't had time to do testing.

Nonetheless, perhaps Michael Norel could be contacted and the status of the source code could be determined?

About a year and a half ago, this was also the topic of a thread here
[1]. Both Yuv and myself have emailed Michael Norel (the author) about
releasing the source code of SmartBlend, and he replied back then that
he'd "At least i'll find time to publicsh sources." So far he hasn't,
unfortunately, but maybe he has more time to spend now than he had
back then. I'll mail him again and post his reply here (unless he
responds here himself, which I actually hope).

By the way, the website you've mentioned does not contain the most
recent version, which is 1.2.5. This newer version can be found at the
PanoTools wiki [2].

Smartblend source code not yet released

I just got a reply to my previously sent email (after sending a
reminder today) about the Smartblend sources. Unfortunately, we will
have to wait a bit longer. I quote:

"Hi Bart.

I have to confirm agreement with SB customrs before to publish SB
sources.  It is in process.
In near future SB sources will not be availible. Sorry."

Let's hope Michael's customers won't object against releasing SB
sources into the public. To be continued...

Bart,

Thank you for your work on this.  I'm hoping that his customers won't object either.

A pity. However, perhaps it is worthwhile to have a look at how
smartblend searches the seam. About two weeks ago Pablo, Andrew and
Rogier discussed how the best seams line should be computed.

smartblend can be called with the parameter --seamverbose in order to
output images that contain the seam line and more information. Could
well be someone experienced can tell from the seam line how the
algorithm works.

Those additional parameters are mentioned in the readme file which is
contained in the smartblend .zip

best regards

Let me get the right.  Michael's for-profit customers are supposed to
give away their proprietary edge so free Hugin can cut into their
customer base.  Maybe the Hugin users should give Michael and his
customers free food, housing, health care, etc. so they don't need to
earn a living.

Frankly, if all the competitive advantage they have is a twist on a
publicly-available blending algorithm provided by a third party, they
don't have a "proprietary edge" at all.

Ok.  Some of their proprietary edge.
