Hello,
I am re-partitioning the 0.8Gb disk (voyager, sparc4m) to accomodate the
openbsd install.

What is the recommended size for the /, swap, /tmp, /usr, /var and /home ?
Only 0.8Gb... also, any chance to install X?

Thank you in advance !

Btw, NetBSD 5.0 and OpenBSD 4.5 are out.

Have: SGI L/XL/Onyx spares, want Atari Mega

Howdy,

I've got a spares kit for the SGI Onyx / Challegne L / XL. It should
have a set of boards for verifying operation / troubleshooting. All the
boards sit in a portable case. I can get an inventory of the contents. I'm
trying to thin down excess heavy (in weight) stuff and clear out storage a
bit. I might have an extra board or two for that series as well.

I also have a SGI original trade show bag for the 24" monitor. It's got
their bug logo and is blue with handles. It's padded. I gave away the 24"
monitors, but kept one of the bags.

I am looking for an Atari ST, prefer mega 2 or mega 4 similar with the
color monitor.

Wait. Didn't your Onyx ... like I think I sold it to cshell down in South
Carolina, and then it somehow made it's way to Philly?

That might be one that came out of NASA Langley!

That's the one.  I managed to pick up several RM4 boards and a 4 port front
plane connector for them, but I get vertical pinstriping if more than 2 are
installed.  Any ideas about that one?  RE2 boardset.  Actually 2 if you
count the one in storage plus all the other RM4's.

My mind is slipping, but I seem to recall that ONE of the boards of the
boardset is very very prone to failures from static discharge. I'm pretty
sure it's the RM's...

Anyone got an infinitereality powerboard set, a VCAM board, or the
front keyswitch panel for a deskside?

I may have a spare RE2 boardset if I can replace it with my IR
boardset. I have the kona backplane but no powerboards.Once that's
done the RE will be up for grabs.

Possible RM configurations are 1, 2, or 4 boards. The deskside chassis
technically only supports up to two boards.

I suppose one may be an RM4T---one is required to terminate the RE in
the Crimson chassis, but not necessary in an Onyx. I haven't tried
this to know what happens when you put an RM4T in an Onyx, but it's
possible that it could result in pinstriping.

But yes, they are prone to this particular failure mode. Can you track
it down to one board in particular?

Is it the actual keyswitch/operator panel from above the drive bays
you need? I am not aware that there is an IR specific rev of this, but
I probably have one on a junked chassis I can pull for you.

I have lots of spare VCAMs (including the correct rev for IR) and SCIP
MEZZ (extra SCSI channels for IO4). Also, a few FDDI MEZZ base boards
(which need media interface daughterboards to be useful).

Interested parties may have as many as their heart desires, for
totally cheap. Contact me offlist.

It seems that no matter what combo I use, I still get pin striping.  Any 1
or 2 boards and its fine.  Add in 2 more and its unusable, although hinv
output shows 4 (at least from what I remember, haven't turned the thing on
in a few years).

If anybody is in the Santa Fe, NM area and wants some sgi hardware, please
give me a shout.

No video doo-dads at all, but I may have a spare keyswitch panel.  I'll let
you know when I get home and have a chance to dig the stuff out.

RDI laptop questions (Sparcbook (Ultrabook, Precisionbook)

by Ethan O'Toole :: Rate this Message:

Hi!

I'm thinking about trying to pick up a RDI Ultrabook and a Precisionbook,
along with a machine from the IBM Thinkpad 800 series (they run AIX).

There is 2 of the 3 on ebay that I'm thinking of bidding on. The seller
said that the Ultrabook does not boot up with any activity on the main
LCD, just the status LCD. The precisionbook is missing power supply.

On the RDI Tadpole Ultrabook things, does the main LCD only go active once
the video drivers are loaded in Solaris? Or does it have a textport / text
console, and that machine is broken?

I've never used any of the three :-)

Thanks!

All of the Tadpole notebooks I've used are just like any other SPARC system
with a normal monitor - you should see boot messages, be able to get to the
OBP console, etc.

Coolio. It's probably dead.

The LCD is functional in OBP mode, so if you don't get that, you're
missing something pretty big.  It sounds like you don't have posession
of the machine, else I'd suggest trying the serial ports.

    I have noticed that the Tadpole screens do not like hot weather;
mine blew one screen (vertical coloured lines 1/3 pixel in width)
on a hot day and it never recovered.

> I've never used any of the three :-)

SPARCbooks are very nice, albeit with a limited amount of
screen "real estate".

Right. Was trying to figure out if it's worth it or not. Also, it's an
Ultrabook 170, not a SparcBook (which I think are different).

Years ago Herman Miller liquidated Sparcbooks, but I was too late.

Perfect!

I'll be watching for them on the feebay and craigslists.

Exactly - I've had to do that on several tadpole systems.  On one, I found both bad ram and a blown processor (red exception state <grin>) thru the simple serial console connect - as nothing showed on screen.

Another potential gotcha is that if there is no ram installed, it can do the same thing sometimes.  I've seen several on e-pay that listed ram but didn't have any (bought one of those).
