The instability over the last couple of days of the OpenJDK servers
is due not to the recent migration itself but rather to the underlying
storage system, which we do not control. The team responsible for our
hosting environment will be taking all the OpenJDK servers offline at
9:30am PDT; they estimate it will take five hours to address the issue,
which gives us an uptime ETA of 2:30pm PDT.

I'll post further updates, as they become available, to the #openjdk
IRC channel on irc.oftc.net.

The migration is complete except for the bugs server, which is still
being worked on. The cr, hg, and mail servers are now open for updates
and incoming e-mail.

When pushing changesets to hg.openjdk.java.net or code-review materials
to cr.openjdk.java.net you will likely see a frightening "DNS SPOOFING
DETECTED" / "REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED" message pointing
to specific lines of your ~/.ssh/known_hosts file. You can eliminate
the message by removing those lines from the file.

FYI the fingerprint of the new RSA host key for both the hg and cr
servers is 37:e0:73:cc:23:fc:2e:29:e7:40:fd:9d:35:69:bc:e3.

OpenJDK server migration TONIGHT (Monday 2009/9/28)

The OpenJDK servers will move to a new datacenter tonight. No updates
to any openjdk.java.net host will be accepted after 8pm PDT tonight,
though all will continue to be available in read-only mode. The cr,
hg, and mail servers should be ready to accept updates by noon PDT on
Tuesday, if not earlier; the bugs server may be offline for a day or
two longer.

The DNS entries for all openjdk.java.net hosts will change overnight,
some time after 1am PDT. If you have a local DNS cache then you might
need to check that it updates properly.

Follow-up announcements will be posted as services come back online.

New Project Proposal: JMX2

In accordance with the OpenJDK guidelines for projects [1], I hereby propose the OpenJDK Project "JMX2".

The Reference Implementation of the JMX API is part of the OpenJDK implementation. This Project
will update it to version 2.0 of the API, which is being defined by JSR 255 [2].

Previously the implementation of the JMX API 2.0 was part of JDK 7 but it was withdrawn as explained
in [3]. This Project will produce an extended OpenJDK implementation that includes the JMX API 2.0
once again.

I propose that this project be sponsored by the JMX Group [4] and that I be the initial moderator of
the Project.

OpenJDK Interim Governance Board: New Members

I'm pleased to announce that Sun has appointed Martin Buchholz (Google)
and Andrew Haley (Red Hat) to the OpenJDK Interim Governance Board [1].

For those who don't already know them, some background:

- Martin Buchholz is a software engineer at Google. A developer of the
JDK core libraries at Sun for many years, he continues to contribute
to OpenJDK, especially in the areas of collections, concurrency, and
subprocesses. He has contributed to many free software projects over
the years, most notably as maintainer of XEmacs.

- Andrew Haley is Open Source Java Technical Lead at Red Hat. He has
been a GCC developer for more than a decade, working particularly on
GCJ, of which he is co-maintainer. He has also made contributions to
Classpath and many other GNU projects. He has been closely involved
with OpenJDK since its first release, with a particular focus on
improving the flow of contributions by breaking down barriers between
OpenJDK developers outside Sun and those within.

The expanded Interim Governance Board is now complete, per last year's
amendment to the OpenJDK Charter [2]. We expect to resume work on our
primary task, namely the creation of a Constitution for the OpenJDK
Community, in the next four to six weeks.

OpenJDK Interim Governance Board status

Per the OpenJDK Charter [1], the Interim Governance Board [2] was
formally dissolved yesterday.

Our main priorities over the last two years have been to grow the
OpenJDK Community from the founding core of Sun's JDK engineers to
a more diverse set of developers, and to enable those developers to
participate directly in the JDK development process.

We've made good progress on those goals, particularly in this past
year. Key developers from the major Linux distributions are working
ever more closely with Sun engineers on the open-source JDK 6 effort,
and the JDK 7 project is approaching its third milestone with several
major features from non-Sun contributors in the pipeline.

Creating a formal governance structure has, at least for those of us
at Sun, been less important than growing the Community. Having laid
a firm foundation for that growth, however, it is now time to turn
back to the governance task.

I am therefore pleased to announce that Sun has agreed to extend the
term of the present Board for a further year, and that we expect to
fill the two empty seats within the next four weeks.

New Project Proposal: Hotspot Express

propose the OpenJDK Project "HotSpot Express".

This Project will be used for the development of stable versions of the
Java HotSpot Virtual Machine. In the HotSpot Express release model, new
versions of HotSpot are drawn from its leading development line
(currently in OpenJDK 7) and prepared for delivery as product-quality
JVMs.

I have updated the OpenJDK Web Site Terms of Use. A link to these

The only change relative to the previous version is a modification
inspired by feedback provided by Andrew Hughes, David Herron and Mark

OpenJDK Bugzilla server rollout

As I posted on the discuss list earlier this week [1], I have set up an
instance of Bugzilla for use by the various OpenJDK efforts.

The system is now live. Please see the project page at:

I've made an initial pass at configuration with feedback from several
folks, but I know we will continue tuning this system to best fit our needs.

Just a reminder: at this point, this instance is only for tracking
contributions from those developers without push permissions. It will
soon expand to track most if not all of the OpenJDK bugs. General bugs

OpenJDK Community Code Review server rollout

As Mark posted on the discuss list [1], the JDK development team uses
peer review as an essential part of the Engineering process.

If the change is a bug fix, we use a script called webrev [2] to
inspect modified files and generate a collection of web pages showing
the proposed changes. The pages are hosted on a web server and a link
to them is circulated as part of the review request. Mark wrote: "The
bug here, of course, is that these publication methods don't make code
reviews visible on the open web..."

With that introduction, I would like to announce the initial rollout
of an OpenJDK Community Code Review server. The home page is
http://cr.openjdk.java.net.

Users having push access to the Mercurial repositories also have scp,
sftp, and rsync access to the code review server. Please refer to the
link above for more information and an example showing how to push a
webrev to the server.

This is an initial step, and I am sure there will be many more.
Please give the site a try and send feedback to
web-discuss(at)openjdk.java.net.

Project Proposal: java.util.Locale enhancement

I hereby propose an openjdk project "Java Locale Enhancement".

This proposal [1] enhances java.util.Locale in order to bring Java into
conformance with IETF BCP47 [2] and UTR35(CLDR/LDML) [3].

The internal structure for Locale was modeled after IETF RFC 1766 [4], which
in 1995 was the industry standard for the representation of languages and
locales (and required by HTML, XML, and many other specifications and
programs).

RFC 1766 has been superseded by IETF BCP 47, which makes a number of
additions needed for the representation of languages. Script codes [5]
support required distinctions among languages that use different writing
systems (such as simplified vs traditional Chinese), with an optimal
hierarchical representation of locale data. 3-letter base language codes
(ISO 639 Part 2 ＆ 3 [6, 7]) represent such languages as Filipino (fil) the
official language of the Philipines. BCP 47 also allows for regional
variants, like Latin American Spanish (es_419), using region identifiers
listed in the IANA subtag registry [8].

Locale's limitations are already causing significant practical problems. For
example, when a J2EE Servlet container implementation parses a language tag
from Accept Language and creates a Locale instance, it cannot map a script
code into the new Locale object without breaking its original structure,
because the use of script code and 3-letter language codes is not allowed by
the current Java Locale specification.

I propose this project be sponsored by the OpenJDK Internationalization
group. I volunteer to be moderator of the project.

Project Proposal: JSR 308: Annotations on Java Types

In accordance with the OpenJDK guidelines for Projects [1],
I hereby propose an OpenJDK Project for JSR 308: "Annotations on Java
Types".

This Project will host the reference implementation of JSR 308,
being developed by Michael Ernst and his team. [2]

I propose this Project be sponsored by the Compiler Group [3]
and that I be the initial Moderator of the project.
