Optional date filters

I am trying to use optional date filters.  I have been using a script associated with a dataset.  If add report parameters that aren't always used, I get an error message when they are not used.  If I don't add report parameters that aren't alwya used, there seems to be no way to adjust my query for optional filtering.

Any ideas?
