Ouch!Just dropped €30 for the equivalent of a spray bottle of S100 and a liter of
synthetic oil. That's $42 -- Michael J. '86 SRX-6 '93 GSX1100G '03 DL1000 AMA IBA #3901 USAF (Ret) NRA etc. _______________________________________________ dc-cycles mailing list dc-cycles@... http://dc-cycles.org/mailman/cgi-bin/listinfo/dc-cycles |

Re: Ouch!Huh, well I for one am not going to complain about Cycles USA going under.
They took 5 weeks to do some small recall items on my '08 KLR, plus I'd asked for a malfunctioning tripmeter to be fixed. So, recall work and one warranty job. When I finally picked it up was the day before they closed, I said what about the tripmeter... they said Oh, we didn't put in a claim for that because our relationship with Kawasaki has not been very good for a while. Nice of them to tell me. I was not happy, I can tell you. This was also the weekend before my warranty expired, so now I have to try to claim the tripmeter retrospectively. Re: Ouch! From what I heard, Criswell closed their PowerSports (division?) to make
room for their Nissan/Infiniti dealerships..formerly Victory by Costco, I believe. They were then thinking about building a new building for PowerSports somewhere nearby on Amaranth Dr. in Germantown, but who knows in this economy what will happen. Although Mr. Criswell is far from poor. Never really cared much for Cycles, so I'm not heartbroken. Probably means more business for the guys at RAM. Re: Ouch!I'm a little bummed out about Cycles USA going away. I bought my first MC
part from them back in 1981. I had bought my KZ440 the previous year and was commuting between Hyattsville and DC almost daily. I was on my way home and lost my clutch cable on L Street. I tried to limp on, but couldn't manage it in rush hour traffic. I ended up pulling over at 14th and L, NW. I called my roomate to come get me and went into the bar and waited. The next day I started calling around for a cable. I tried the Dirt Shop (in College Park) and Freestate (where I bought the bike) but they did not have one in stock. I called Cycles USA and they did. So, I jumped in the truck and drove up there, got the cable, drove back to where I had left the bike (abandoned gas station at the corner) and tried to replace the cable. I then had to go find a hardware store to buy an impact driver to get it apart since the screws were frozen in the case <sigh>. Eventually, I got the bike back together and rode it home. My roomate brought me back later to pick up the truck (after a quick stop at the bar...) Over the years, I had good luck getting parts and accessories through Cycles USA. I tried them for service twice. Once on an older bike and once for the 500 mile service on a new bike. Both experiences convinced me that I would not go to them for service unless there was absolutely no other choice. Their sales team was hit or miss. I had a few good conversations with the sales guys, but for the most part, they weren't all that knowledgeable. They may have had some area of expertise, but it wasn't an area that I was interested in. Sales and Service is probably what did them in. It is a shame to lose them, but that's business. If they can't compete, they can't survive. By the way, I stopped by Heyser Cycle last week (first time I've been in there in several years). The sales floor looked pretty much the same, but the parts and accessories area was really well stocked. The counter guys were friendly and helpful and I will certainly go there again. I normally use RAM Cycles (in Rockville) but it's good to have options. I may have to swing by the Dirt Shop sometime. I used to spend a lot of time there when I lived down that way. The last time I drove by, they looked like they were still in business, but I haven't gone there in years. Re: Ouch!Does that mean MoCo is down to one motorcycle dealership (Battley's)? Being the perennial tightwad, and firm believer in the overwhelming merits of purchasing used bikes, I have to confess I don't follow the ups and downs of the dealership business all that closely.

Re: Ouch!Battley's/Rockville H-D may be the only full-service MC dealer in the county
now. RAM is pretty full-service, but they do not sell new bikes, only used. Their big thing is parts, accessories and service. I do go to Battley's every now and then (since they're 5 minutes from my house) but don't buy too much from them. I did buy my Sidi boots from them a couple of years ago when they were having a big sale... Re: Ouch!Dave, at CAD, sold out a few years ago. RAM opened in the same location but
outgrew it and moved to E. Gude Drive last year. They've continued to expand and have plans to do more. Their prices are a little higher than CAD, at least in some areas, but they've got a big service shop and can get a lot done with very little wait time. Routine items, like tires, oil, etc. can sometimes get done "while you wait" or within one day. That's an improvement over most shops, in my experience. I hate having to make an appointment (or drop my bike off) days or weeks ahead to get stuff done. I do some things myself, but when I need a shop, I need it now... The crew at RAM have been good to work with and I'm pretty happy with them. Perry On Thu, Jul 23, 2009 at 11:33 AM, Kirk Roy <kirkroy@...> wrote: > How long has RAM been around? Is CAD dead? Re: Ouch!Yes, I hoped colemans' would be next because of all the horror stories
I've heard. We've got the internet to order parts now from sites like ronayers and bikebandit. (often the dealerships just order the parts anyway, and sometimes screw it up, Why drive somewhere to pay someone, to come back, to pick it up, when you could just order from home and get it delivered there?) Stock up yourself on things you can anticipate. How often do you guys buy new bikes to need several within 20 minutes drive? I've only heard good things about Motorcycle Factory to buy new bikes. Personally I'd travel a couple hundred miles for the money. A friend of mine got his bike shipped from Florida. *shrug* As far as service... Big dealerships will hire unqualified people. My cousin got a job at freestate, I wouldn't want him even pushing my bike around much less working on it. And now for a plug, I have a new shop in capitol heights MD, around the corner from freestate. My partner is the mechanic, he graduated MMI, worked at a small shop, then worked at freestate for a coupe of years. So you can get the same profesional dealership experienced mechanic at a much lower rate. His rates are also pretty reasonable, and I invite you to compare prices. I know for a fact that he will do jobs cheaper than anywhere else locally. So I invite you to call around and then call him for work estimates. JC 321-432-4600 I guess I'll throw up another post.. _______________________________________________ dc-cycles mailing list dc-cycles@... http://dc-cycles.org/mailman/cgi-bin/listinfo/dc-cycles |

Battley's has a used bike department. They sell trade-ins and consignment bikes. Bingo is the guy in charge of that area. It's on the left of the building as you face it from the street. As for dealers, has D.C. Cruisers gone away? They sold new bikes of the "custom" variety....Iron Horse, Bear, etc. (i.e. expensive but pretty if you like choppers). -- Mike B. -- '04 FLSTCI (H-D Softail Heritage Classic with EFI for the non-Harley folks) Learning from your mistakes is good. Also there are sites near-ish by in Front royal, Fredericsburg(apex), and locust grove. These sites are a bit out of the NoVA area and if you are willing to drive a bit, generally have MUCH shorter wait times for classes. Locust Grove recently opened a second training range, so they are running 2 24-student classes a weekend, plus a mid-week course. I find it amazing that there is that much demand for training, but as long as there are students wanting it we will be there offering training if we can. -JD _______________________________________________ dc-cycles mailing list dc-cycles@... http://dc-cycles.org/mailman/cgi-bin/listinfo/dc-cycles |
