Anyone else here use Windows XP?  :)  This below video popped up as a
warning re Win7, coming in October:  Note the "just buy a new machine"
comment toward the end - definitely cutting into a biking budget.  So many
alternatives . . ..

I'm running Win 7 pre-release now.  It's much better than Vista and I did a
rolling upgrade.

A couple of comments about the video:

1. Not having the program media to reinstall.  Any idiot should have these
handy regardless
of whether you upgrade or not.  It's a matter of if not when, your hard drive
fails. You'll eventually have
to do that anyway.

2.  Any major upgrade should be a clean install.  Rolling upgrades leave too
many artifacts and
usually performance is less than a optimal compared to a clean install.

3.  Windows, dating back to 3.1., should have an annual "wiping" anyway.  It
becomes bloated
and slow. A clean install gets things running faster and smoother.

4. XP (SP2) support expires in April 2010.  XP (SP3) continues support
(security patches etc), through
April 2014. There's no hurry to rush out and install Windows 7 if you don't
have to.

If nothing else, in 2014, buy a new PC with 7 on it.  You'll probably be about
due for a new one by then
anyway.

Re #4 and then? (support for XP).  Somewhat confirming and relating nitty
gritty -- April 2014 is apparently the enddate for my XP Pro.  The latest
language I have from reputable media is ". . .plans to continue support for
consumer versions of Windows XP until April 14, 2009, and extended support
for business and developer Windows XP software until April 8, 2014."  Also
http://blogs.technet.com/lifecycle/ has 2009 comments.  Version and Service
Pack (and "Mainstream- and Extended- Support") seem to be bouncing around.
So many terms, so little time . . ..  Me, I've pencilled in 2014.
