Hi,

i want to use an old AVM ISDN PCI Card in a Windows DomU, is this possible with vt-d and
iommu ? What would be the better choise, Intel or AMD ?

Afaik there are no AMD boards with an IOMMU capable of passing through
devices to an HVM guest, so Vt-d (which is an Intel-term) is your only
choice for now.
Supported (or better "working", since almost no vendor gives official
VT-d support with Xen) boards can be found here:

Hi Velten,

Your best bet would be Intel Desktop Board DQ45CB. Tried and tested.

Hi,

Only the very latest AMD boards using the AMD SR56X0 chipsets (Or to be more specific the SP5100 southbridge that goes with them) support PCI Passthrough. Here are a couple of examples:
http://www.tyan.com/product_SKU_spec.aspx?ProductType=MB&pid=647&SKU=600000127
http://www.supermicro.com/Aplus/motherboard/Opteron2000/SR56x0/H8DA6+.cfm
http://www.supermicro.com/Aplus/motherboard/Opteron8000/SR56x0/H8QI6-F.cfm
http://www.tyan.com/product_board_detail.aspx?pid=651

I suspect you need a fairly recent kernel and Xen version for these boards to work but maybe someone on the list knows the specifics.

I've a member in Singapore hardwarezone.com forums who told me he has a P55 chipset board with VT and VT-d options in the BIOS.

But he didn't tell me the brand/model of the board.

Hi Velten,

VT-d support is not mentioned in the tech spec for the dp55kg so I would not risk it unless some one here has tried it and knows it works.

Server equivalent like one of these would be a better choice (They specifically support VT-d):

very interessting, but i want more than one pci classic slot

So i was looking for more informations, and find out that there a low-budget iCore System
without Hypermode, Turbo Boost and VT-d, in most for iCore5

http://www.pctreiber.net/news/44-prozessoren/472-ueberblick-ueber-kommende-intel-cpus-
http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/Intel-Core-i3-i5-i7-Produktbezeichungen-und-Preise-durchgesickert-750777.html

So i'm not sure what i should do, an "old" Q45 with an OuadCore is nearly the same price
than a iCore7 with P55 Board.

So i will try to find more informations about the DP55KG Extreme Board with vt-d, but with
iCore7 it should be possible.

P55 chipset boards use the new Socket LGA1156. This socket supports both Core i5 and Core i7.

You should definitely get this instead of the older X58 chipset boards which use socket LGA1366. Socket LGA1366 only supports Core i7, not Core i5. X58 chipset supports VT-d too, as do Q35, Q45, X38, and X48 which are outdated.

Intel releases P55 after X58.

Dear Velten,

Below is the link to a Intel DP55KG motherboard review by motherboards.org. This link shows the BIOS screenshot of DP55KG.

http://www.motherboards.org/imageview.html?i=/images/reviews/motherboards/1948_p5_13.jpg

As you can see in the image, there is the line that says: Intel VT for Directed I/O (VT-d). But there's no option for you to enable or disable the feature.

I am wondering if you must enable Intel VT *first* before you can enable or disable VT-d.

To enable VT, you need to have a processor that supports VT. The P55 chipset definitely supports VT-d.

Some parts of this message have been removed. Learn more about Nabble's security policy.

Sounds good, P55 can definitely support VT-d so if Intel have added bios support then it should work fine.

After a bit of Googling I heard mention that quite a few of the ASRock P55 boards support VT-d too.

   Hi Velten,

VT-d support is not mentioned in the tech spec for the dp55kg so I
would not risk it unless some one here has tried it and knows it works.

Server equivalent like one of these would be a better choice (They

Hi Velten,

I have done more research on Google and it is hopeful that DP55KG will support VT-d.

Please refer to the following link:

I don't think Intel put VT-d line in the BIOS for fun.

Hi All,

I have received a BIOS screenshot from member clon22 in hardwarezone.com.sg hardware clinic forum.

His motherboard is MSI P55-GD80. It costs about S$300++ in Singapore.

BIOS screenshot showing the VT-d option is here:

here in Germany you can get the MSI for 175€ and the DP55KG also for about 175€

But the MSI with the heatpipe is more for overclocking users, so i will order the DP55KG

   Hi Velten,

I have done more research on Google and it is hopeful that DP55KG
   will support VT-d.

   Dear Velten,

Below is the link to a Intel DP55KG motherboard review by
motherboards.org <http://motherboards.org>. This link shows the BIOS

   screenshot of DP55KG.

   http://www.motherboards.org/imageview.html?i=/images/reviews/motherboards/1948_p5_13.jpg

As you can see in the image, there is the line that says: Intel VT
for Directed I/O (VT-d). But there's no option for you to enable or
   disable the feature.

I am wondering if you must enable Intel VT *first* before you can
   enable or disable VT-d.

To enable VT, you need to have a processor that supports VT. The P55
   chipset definitely supports VT-d.

I don't think Intel put VT-d line in the BIOS for fun.

P55 chipset boards use the new Socket LGA1156. This socket
supports both Core i5 and Core i7.
You should definitely get this instead of the older X58 chipset
boards which use socket LGA1366. Socket LGA1366 only supports
Core i7, not Core i5. X58 chipset supports VT-d too, as do Q35,
       Q45, X38, and X48 which are outdated.

       Intel releases P55 after X58.

very interessting, but i want more than one pci classic slot

So i was looking for more informations, and find out that
there a low-budget iCore System without Hypermode, Turbo
Boost and VT-d, in most for iCore5

           http://www.pctreiber.net/news/44-prozessoren/472-ueberblick-ueber-kommende-intel-cpus-
           http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/Intel-Core-i3-i5-i7-Produktbezeichungen-und-Preise-durchgesickert-750777.html

So i'm not sure what i should do, an "old" Q45 with an
OuadCore is nearly the same price than a iCore7 with P55 Board.

So i will try to find more informations about the DP55KG
Extreme Board with vt-d, but with iCore7 it should be possible.

              Hi Velten,

VT-d support is not mentioned in the tech spec for the
           dp55kg so I
would not risk it unless some one here has tried it and
           knows it works.

Server equivalent like one of these would be a better
           choice (They
              specifically support VT-d):

i don't know, which one i should order
i need a classic pci slot for an ISDN Card in Windows

the second pci slot i could use for a ISDN Fax Server, but with an hvm passtrough, both
pci slot are forwarding to the windows Server, so i could get the cheaper WB Board.
