Re: PF exhibit on 09-19-09I was looking at Emily's "Boatyard hair with color coordinated
facepaint" awhile ago, and I liked it so much I searched for the "Like" button in Facebook but couldn't find one. And then it occurred to me: Why not have a PhotoForum in Facebook? Put all the photos there every week, and we can give comment instantly, too. ADavidhazy wrote: > The PhotoForum members' gallery/exhibit space was updated SEP 19, > 2009. Re: PF exhibit on 09-19-09Merely my opinion of this week's Gallery, worth nothing more or less than two cents: Jim Davis - Boardsailing Motosuko. The pale blue mountain and the tree covered slopes immediately capture my attention, and only belatedly do I locate the boardsailing. Since an image generally speaks for itself, quibbling about how a title may or may not be effective or appropriate is somewhat pointless. Emily L. Ferguson - Boatyard hair with color coordinated facepaint. I see yellow fish netting with strands of blue, and paint splotches on the deck of the boat. As for metaphor, yes, of course, it could very well be seen as human hair and cosmetics, but I prefer to interpret an image MY way, not the author’s! Stephen Ylvisaker - Eirik the Red Tack sharp detail, good exposure. I feel like I could reach over and pet that curly head. Marilyn Dalrymple – Dragonfly This is somewhat like Boardsailing, where there’s just a bit of delay before the subject is recognized. Maybe if there were no title, a viewer would soon discover that dragonfly, and be pleasantly surprised. Rob Miracle - Brittany on the Rocks I’d vote for cropping away most of the left side of the shot, because the girl is the subject, and she’s got an interesting expression on her face. Roy Miller - Filomena As an abstraction and a Photoshop manipulation, there isn’t much of a feeling of woman or girl here. Seems like a clash of color, a chaos. |

Re: PF exhibit on 09-19-09I think the lazy ones would just click "Like", and sometimes I'm the
lazy one. :) But occasionally, I would write something like "This is like an abstract painting, and I'm not looking for meaning, but I'm drawn by the play and movement of the colors yellow, blue and red. The yellow hair is female, caressing the white board of red and blue blotches of paint. And I wouldn't want to be sexist, but the board is strong and bold, so I see it as male. I would be interested to see what happens if the yellow is further saturated just a bit, and changed to the periphery of orange." Thank you, Emily, for the photo and for instantly connecting me to your Facebook. :) Emily L. Ferguson wrote: > At 7:54 PM +0800 9/19/09, Elson T. Interesting how the white sails draw ones attention, but they're not strong enough to support the image title. > Stephen Ylvisaker - Eirik the Red I'd prefer the bg to be kicked back by darkening and throwing further out of focus. Not being a dog person I mostly find myself looking at the yuckky sloppy tongue and dragonian curve of its edge draped among the aptly named canines there! Must be a nice dog, but keep me away from the sloppy kiss routine, please. > Marilyn Dalrymple - Dragonfly I have this problem with my photos too - the 2:3 ratio just doesn't solve the problem of taking a photo of an environment with a small object in it and having the object be the attention getter. There are so many distractions and one cannot adjust the environment to rearrange them so they support the object of particular interest. Perhaps moving to the right, getting down lower... Oh but there's poison ivy over there - whoops. So the dragonfly looks sufficiently small that we must be alerted to it. And yet, if we took an image of just the dragonfly, we would not be saying anything about the beauty of its environment. And the image would be just another of a million photographs of dragonflies. > John Palcewski - Festival of St. Vito Interesting cultural references here - the focussed but contentless stare of the boy, the conflict between the beautiful white smock and the ugly modern aluminum foil around the flowers, the complete lack of involvement by the grownups in the situation accentuating the aloneness of the boy, and yet he's surrounded by a mob. > > Rob Miracle - Brittany on the Rocks The face and sky are very dark on my monitor so I'm deprived of seeing the expression in the model's eyes. The pose looks contrived and extremely uncomfortable and the clothing is in complete conflict with the environment. > Roy Miller - Filomena Sure. OK. But why? > > Elson T. Elizaga - All We Are Saying Wonderful twist on the '60s motif. The print is too big, however - even for a billboard. It dominates the image. And the font has no grace. And the hand with the flower looks like it doesn't belong to the boy - just too big and worn. As always, thanks to Andy for his labor in the vineyard. We are so fortunate to have him do this each week! >FYI - for subscription instructions and other informational files visit the >PhotoForum's website at: http://people.rit.edu/andpph/photoforum.html > >PF on Facebook at: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=234442540144&ref=mf -- Emily L. It has offered me an opportunity to keep in touch with 3 or 4 of my circles of acquaintances over the last 50 years of my life.
