Re: PF member's exhibit on 10-10-09Hi all,
Here are my reactions to this week's gallery. <SNIP> Subject: PF member's exhibit on 10-10-09 > The PhotoForum members' gallery/exhibit space was updated OCT 03, 2009. > Authors > with work now on display at: http://people.rit.edu/andpph/gallery.html > include: > > Lea Murphy - Adobe The composition is very good. I like the texture and pattern of tones in the adobe. > John Palcewski - Maria A beautiful portrait of Maria. I like the way the natural light falls on her but feel there is a bit too much fill. In B&W I happen to like portraits like this to have more contrast and deeper blacks. I do like the hair falling over her eye, a nice touch. > Laurenz Bobke - In the hands of a Giant A very nice image. The dark background contrasts well with the bird and hand in the light. The diagonal of the arm draws my eye in as well. > Roger Eichhorn - Simple but effective. The composition works even though the pigeon is centered. A nice balance of the bright sky and dark building. > Don Roberts - Toad Lilies The photographed looks enhanced but it still works on that level. It might have been interesting if you had rotated the camers so the twig comes out closer to the corner. > Emily L. Ferguson - Down the Hatch A very well made action shot. Sailboat racing is very interesting in general but the details, as you captured here, are things most people don't see. This must have been a tough exposure situation which you handled well. > Michael Hughes - 10.3.2009 12.45 Lunch with the De Veres at Dunston Hall A nice archetectural image of Dunston Hall but it doesn't say lunch to me. You did a nice job keeping the building square. > Mark Lent - Moment of Joy A very well captured image of a moment of action. The D200 certainly holds reds well. > > <SNIP> Mark Harris gsphotoguy@... http://gsphotoguy.photography.com/ |

RE: PF member's exhibit on 10-10-09The PhotoForum members' gallery/exhibit space was updated OCT 03, 2009. Authors with work now on display at: http://people.rit.edu/andpph/gallery.html include: Lea Murphy - Adobe [Chris] I suppose Adobe is a fort. I did not know this. Is it special in some away? John Palcewski - Maria [Chris] The normal face of an untroubled young lady: may her life be long and productive. Laurenz Bobke - In the hands of a Giant [Chris] The bird does look frightened and probably expected to die. Roger Eichhorn - [Chris] The pigeon looks like a gargoyle carving on the edge of the building. Don Roberts - Toad Lilies [Chris] It looks a good photo but I do not like flowers. Emily L. Ferguson - Down the Hatch [Chris] The title seems inappropriate as nothing in "down the hatch" at that time. The figures in the image look like ballerinas wearing flared clothing! Michael Hughes - 10.3.2009 12.45 Lunch with the De Veres at Dunston Hall [Chris] You must have had a good time! Who is De Veres and what brought you there? Mark Lent - Moment of Joy [Chris] Men are strange! It is only football! [Chris] Chris. |

It inclines me to move on to the next. > Laurenz Bobke - In the hands of a Giant Interesting how there's not really any sense of panic in this, despite the clamp (albeit warm and probably gentle) in which the bird is held. Sure, the bright spot would do better darkened, of course you can't completely wipe it out because of the other spot behind it, and it could be cropped off entirely, but the open beak and blown-out highlights on the top of the hand really keep my eyes from seeing it much. I think it would be somewhat improved by not getting the skin blown out to begin with. Better to underexpose and correct than overexpose and be unable to. > > Roger Eichhorn - Pigeons and seagulls are rats of the sky in my vocabulary, but I don't hold that against this one. It's just that there's nothing bird-ish really happening in this image. So, OK. Got anything more interesting? > Don Roberts - Toad Lilies The arrow composition is good enough as it goes, I can't tell for sure about the sharpness - there's a look of a photoshop artsy filter about the image, accentuated by the speckled flowers. I think I would have preferred fewer items in the image area. > Michael Hughes - 10.3.2009 12.45 Lunch with the De Veres at Dunston Hall No lunch, no De Veres, just dunston Hall and funny mushyness on the top two stories. Lots of flues, however. > Mark Lent - Moment of Joy Tack sharp, but why are guys so wierd, and why do they invest so much energy in winning and games? I don't see any joy in particular, just a guy up in the air who could just have easily have been being tackled as being lifted up in joy. Celebration is possibly one big place where men and women experience a deep rift in style. >There are 3 photographs awaiting installation. Vissak, Strevens, Palcewski) >The time to send yours is NOW! Re: PF member's exhibit on 10-10-09Correct! A friend describes them as "rats with feathers." However,
this pigeon is native, not one of the ubiquitous imports. Sorry you didn't find it interesting. They come so rarely that I haven't caught one in flight when their band tail would be evident. An earlier post suggested sharpening the head and doing some cropping. I thought of that, but didn't bother for this display. Roger On 15 Oct 2009, at 10:53 AM, Emily L.
