I'll be visiting western Panama and the canal area in February and Nicaragua in March. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who could recommend a good guide in both countries and the best places to stay  and to bird in both.

Hi Jim --

I would definitely recommend that you sped at least some time in Panama at
the Canopy Tower -- they have excellent guides and will take you to some of
the best birding areas. Be sure you also visit Metropolitan Park and (on the
Caribbean side) Achiote Road for some specialties there. There are a number
of trip reports on Blake Maybank's web site (www.birdingtheamericas.com) and
also some on the Canopy Tower web site itself.

We also went to the newer Canopy Lodge in El Valle, it is good for some
Caribbean slope and Pacific upland species and also, has some rarities not
found in the Canal zone.

There is a "Green Circuit" of Panama that also takes in areas such as the
Bocas del Toro and Darian regions, and sites in between. Lots of info on
Panama and a great place to bird!

There is far less info on Nicaragua. We will be there one day next month,
off a cruise, and could not find a guide for the day. However we did engage
Tierra Tours (www.tierratour.com) out of Leon to take us to a birding area
on the volcanic slopes nearby. There are some nature tour companies (e.g.
Tours Nicaragua)  which are on the web; they were not interested in a
one-day deal but obviously would be if it were a longer time period. There
are also some eco-lodges on the web.
