Greetings. I don't know how I got on your mailing list. Perhaps one of my Grandchildren used your service. I am not really certain what it is you do and I am not angry that I get these emails. I simply have no interest in your emails. However, I can not find a way to stop the mailings to me. Would you please be so kind as to enlighten an old man as to how to unscribe from your mailing list?? Thank you so much. D. D. Y. hnslove@... :)

Is this using the Haptek interface ? I have been having a LOAD of trouble with several of the Pandorabots that use the Haptek interface. The images are significantly jumbled.

The A.I. Foundation is offering access to Two Bots Talking: Fake Kirk
and A.L.I.C.E.

This is a highly entertaining, fun application.   You can watch hours
of Fake Kirk and A.L.I.C.E. generate their own little drama.

We are charging a small fee for the service because it uses up
resources quickly on our server when two bots talk to each other.
Also, we are using up voice streams from Oddcast for the
text-to-speech.

Suzette, made by Bruce Wilcox using CHAT-L and on the other side we have
A.L.I.C.E. using program W. The conversations can be quite comical. They are

can join the conversation if you feel like it.

This is still only beta and you need to register to get access to the

Maybe we could get *three* bots together?

Robby Garner and I did an experiment in 1998 called "The Forbin
Project" where we connected his bot Albert to ALICE over the net.
There was no animation, but it was a fun first step.

"Colossus: The Forbin Project" is a great cold-war era sci-fi movie
about a supercomputer, Colossus, who is put in charge of all US
defenses.   Then it is revealed that the Soviet Union has their own
defense supercomputer, Guardian.   What do you think happens? Two
bots start talking...

It would be great to see a Captain Kirk character in there as well, but
we're not ready yet to easily allow people from the outside to instantiate
their own bots. But some day we will.

The conversations can be quite comical. They are accompanied with talking gestures that are quite fun by themselves. And you can join the conversation if you feel like it.

5.3, but I'm quite happy to start fresh with Program O, since there's an

I tried running 'Program E' on a PHP server, only to discover that some of
the language (split|explode, eregi|preg_match) in respond.php has been
deprecated.

Has anyone updated this code to run in modern PHP? It doesn't look like the
project at SourceForge has been updated since 2005, unless I am mistaken.

MSN Pandora Bot Update, Beta 5

I just finished the latest update for my MSN Pandora Bot Program, Beta 5!

Here's the changelog for this update:

* Updated User Message filter to filter out more special characters that cause errors such as the common double quotes (").
* Added bot message filter to filter out most HTML code and line breaks in the bot's message, which has caused the message to get cut off when sent to the user.
* Added the option to pick either the Paid Pandora Bots Server or the Regular Pandora Bots Server on the main window.
* Added Customer ID Isolation which separates the Cusomer ID of each user so each user will have separate varibles that are set by the bot.
* Added the option to turn Customer ID Isolation On or Off.
* Added the option to set the delay of how long it takes for the bot to respond to the user's message.
* Added the User Data window to look at and manage the stored Users and their Customer IDs.
* Added Defaults button on all option windows to reset all the options on the window to default.
* Resetting the bot now resets all Customer IDs.

If you notice any glitches or problems with anything please let me know.

It’s also pretty easy to set up your own bot server using one of the AIML engines provided for free on the website. Granted, the editing isn’t quite as easy, but GaitoBot isn’t too bad.

Well the good news for bot developers is that there is more interest in chatbots than ever before; thanks to the rapid progress in ‘complementary’ technologies such as Avatar engines and speech to text software. The bad news is that commercial investment is still probably two years in the future. The free server has had increasing overload / timeout issues in the past few years. Except for companies like Google or AOL; few have the money for a redundant server setup that can handle thousands of simultaneous sessions. Assuming a lack of funding, the only thing Dr. Wallace can do is limit the number of users to a first come, first serve basis with session time limits. Better for some to be blocked for a time than the service be dead to all. Also there have been a few ‘bot hogs’ in the past; who having created a popular bot in a public forum that eats up most of the public server’s resources. There also needs to be a resource governor to limit the greedy. Of course such rules and limits need to be posted for all.

Yes there are various private and public ‘Agents’ that allow passing a comment to a search engine. AIML has tags or triggers that can start other programs running. One private example is a “Biom” agent that came out last year for AOL instant messaging services. There is a lot of innovation and program intergration going on over at “Second Life” web site. Also check the Alice web site discussion forums.

What is a AI Chatbot and what is artificial intelligence?

To add a bit more detail, a chat bot is like an Instant messaging or text message session with a talking computer. You control the computer’s ‘personality’ and the subjects it can talk about. Imagine your most favorite personality, say Michael Jackson for example, being online 24/7; and always happy to chat with you. Or a Sales agent selling your product 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for no pay, no benefits, and it never gets tired or needs to go to the bathroom. Now this all depends on the quality of the Artificial Intelligence software and the knowledge data base it uses. Pandora bots provides the AI engine; you program the knowledge base “KB”. The programming language is called AIML. Basically it provides an efficient means of providing content for all possible branches or permutations of a conversation. That is all the possible paths a given discussion can take for one subject. A fundamental question is, is AIML creating artificial intelligence, or just a brute force means of having a comment for every possible branch of a conversation. For example if a chess program had a database of every possible move of the game, is that intelligence, or just a kind of instinct? Generally scientists measure intelligence by the ability to match patterns of information. What pattern matching abilities does AIML have if any??

Now it sounds like the new transcript import utility would have to have pattern matching analysis algorithms to correctly catigorize all the subjects and objects in a dialog session.

a pandorabot is a chat bot. You create the bot and program it on the pandorabot site. You then link it to your page or to somewhere in places like Second Life and people can talk to it.

The pandorabots use a logic tree to generate answers to comments and questions, and are pretty sophisticated.

Ugly website, I agree, while I have created many more ugly. What I find amazing is that the home page for http://Pandorabots.com does not illustrate a bot itself... nor does http://alicebot.org/superbot.html

One is expected to shell out $999 just by looking at some text on a gray page. Ho hum.

Not even a screen shot! No animated gif. Not even a "TRY THIS" button.

Naught bought bot. Hope there is an active forum for online discussion and demonstrations. I did not see a link here.

Trek TV series. In those 72 episodes, Captain Kirk has about 9000
lines of dialog. Pandorabots SpellBinder read these lines and created
a Captain Kirk chat bot with about 2000 categories and 6000 responses
(a category is the basic unit of knowledge). Pandorabots SpellBinder
also created a chat bot representations of Mr. Spock and Dr. McCoy.

Generally, the more dialog samples available in the transcripts, the
higher the fidelity of the resulting chat bot. In their review, the
A.I. Foundation also used Pandorabots SpellBinder to scan the

with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldin. Pandorabots SpellBinder was used
to create chat bots representing Neil and Buzz. As the number of

which is intended for announcements. This list is for more general discussion.

There are only two bots on the free server, ALICE and iGod, who get
more than the transaction limit of 50K per day on the subscription
server. Unless you have an extremely popular bot, it's very unlikely
you'll go over the limit.

Please remember that there are probably hundreds, if not thousands, of people on this mailing list. I think most of us would rather just get the main announcements and not the details about people's specific issues. Forums are for detailed discussions of issues and those forums abound.

Its been like this for nearly a year (and probably longer), outages have
just changed in frequency. If you are going to offer a loss leader free
service, then please make it a working service. Its not nice for us either
seeing people call you out on it and be given disingenuous answers as to
when, if ever, they are going to be fixed.

I know I could spend more time on PB if things were not too frustrating, and
I am your target market. I host virtual world bots already (and fwiw i bet
their bandwidth is way bigger per head that yours, and i make a profit, but
i digress) and PB is a fun extention of their use but with responses either
delayed, or failing, it puts a dampener on using the free service at all.
Plus its not professional. Is this what you want?

When you started offering the bot hosting i looked and thought ouch! big
price for a hobby/improver and I would have liked to see another light user
tier, like the free hosting, but working. However now I see you have
imposed transaction limits to even the expensive hosted solution then I can
only imagine introducing a light user tier at a single figure monthly fee
would need transaction limits far too restrictive to be useful.

So thats it, if you want in to pandorabots, its either a shoddy (sorry) free
service, or a hugely expensive working solution out of the reach of all but
serious business and the well moneyed. Shame, but there you have it.

I dont want to sound ungrateful for the free hosting that worked.....but as
pointed out, it is a component within a growing spread of products you
provide therefore you continuing to ask us to forgive its sins for being
free is starting to rankle.

Sorry to have to be negative, but I too have been frustrated by the 'free'
hosting for some time. You want to grow you business but keep the freebs
static, so you let one poison the other. Thats not how to fix it. Who are
you going to be selling this new Spellbinder product to? People that will
test and use it where?

Perhaps not, but for our bot applications in Second Life (using Program#),
we could use speech recognition to good effect to integrate voice chat.

BTW, we have had lots of issues in resolving conflicts between the standard
AIML set and the new knowledge files we've added. Any suggestions as to an
easy way to identify the location of the conflict/missed pattern match?

It depends on the application. A bot posting to a web forum or
chatting in IM for example doesn't need speech recognition or an
avatar. Your point is well taken however and we will look into
offering integrated solutions.
