Thanks to those who offered help on this - I've installed a whole new
set up on a new/old machine and it's nearly ok.
If anyone else is going to have a go at installing on a fresh Ubuntu
9.10 install using the instructions at
http://www.howtoforge.com/ledgersmb_debian_etchthen Step 2 apt-get install longlist-of-perl-stuff
will fail until you have done a system update (Package-Manager/Synaptic
etc).
