10 vs. 16

hello there,

i hope some may find my comparison shoot results useful . . .

i shoot a lot of action panoramas, and for those i tend to use my
homemade head which is a simple L shaped aluminum bracket i set up for
my canon 5d and the nikkor 10.5. one piece. no moving parts,
virtually no weight, and (cargo) pocket sized. i recently modified it,
adding the ability to quickly do a zenith shot, without having to
remove the camera, while maintaining nodal as best as possible, in
case somebody's watching (otherwise, i find leveling and nodal point
retention overrated for most of my purposes; i rarely take an upshot
when in the middle of a crowd, even less likely the chance if i hand
hold my rig, but you never know.)

i also like to use my nikkor 16mm for the added resolution, but the
zenith and nadir shots are unavoidable whith that lens.

suspecting that the nodals are quite close on the two lenses, i shot
two panoramas with only altering the lens and the number of shots. it
was getting dark, and i chose a spot for the test hastily, allowing
for few to no reference points for the zenith shot for the 16mm
series. this is evident from the resulting panorama which i left
untouched.

i used a monopod, which is not possible to level (nor was it) and
admittedly there was some swinging action for good measure - i.e. the
monopod does/did not stay straight throughout the photo process as a
tripod tends to. also, i added a rotator to the mix, because i am not
very practiced at shooting 6 images around.

my conclusion
pro: having the two prime lenses with a super compact setup, needing
only to swap the glass on the camera, i can reliably shoot panoramas
of varying resolution, action or architecture - ideal when walking the
city without a bag.
con: no template stitching. bracketing may require extra post
processing time.

still, i would not trade my adjuste giga for anything ;^)

for this test i used ptgui v8.02pro:

16mm
1. shot 6 around and 1 up, 1 down
2. stitched all horizontal and zenith images (jpg) with 'auto' control
points
3. added the offset downshot (masked tif) using view point correction
4. stitched directly to .mov

10.5mm
1. shot 4 around, 1 down
2. stitched all horizontal images (jpg) with manual control points (4
sets/image pair)
3. added the offset downshot (masked tif) using viewpoint correction
4. stitched directly to .mov

the panoramas stitched fairly well:
(1) the 16mm pano has a slight misalignment in the zenith area, for
lack of reference points between the neighboring images involved at
that seam

(2) the 10mm pano has a bit of the monopod left in it, as i did not
step back far enough for the nadir photo, and shows some imperfection
toward at zenith, mostly due to the fact that i shot the images with
the camera set more or less at 0 degrees vs. tilting it up slightly.
clearly, both issues are completely avoidable.

Hello Roger,
How do you manage to keep the camera rotating exactly if it is tied only
with a string?
Do you mean that you did not use your pole and pano head?

Hurricane Ike Panoramas

With Hurricane Ida bearing down on the Gulf Coast, I have posted a series of panos on my blog from a year ago when I was photographing in the natural areas of the Upper Texas Coast a month after Hurricane Ike made landfall in Galveston, Texas. These natural areas are extremely important locations for migratory birds and one of the nation's top locations to witness spring songbird migration.

These panos were processed using my old workflow and I need to reprocess them with my current process but don't have the time right now. Anyway, I thought I would share.

Having lived through numerous hurricanes while growing up in Florida and living in Texas for the past few years, I wish my best to all those preparing for Ida this week.

It struggle to photograph disaster and that is why all of these images were created about a month after the storm passed. I made the decision to wait and stay out of the way of relief and rescue efforts.

For the iPhone you can use moblvr. It's not an iPhone app. It allows
flash pannos to be displayed on an iPhone.

In the Khajuraho temple complex I only used the pole in 2 places where the security guards could not see me.
This one with the horse was done with a small thread put loosely around the end of the lens and a brass key used like a plumb bob level near the ground. The camera was held up about 7 feet high to be more inline with the carvings.

I noticed some jitter ("dancing segments") in the image. I also noticed quite noticable CA in parts of the pano. I can't imagine that this may have something to do with the inability to use a tripod.

MacPro, Firefox 3.5.5, Flash 10.

As to the subject matter: fascinating pano; a glimpse into an ancient tradition that did not consider sex "dirty" or "sinful"....

Here's a view of the Burning Ghats of Varanasi at sunrise from a boat.
In the morning mostly cleanup is being done, later in the day and into the night the fires are going strong. Children under 12 years old, pregnant woman and holy men (dead of course) are not cremated. They are wrapped in a blanket, weighted down and put in the river. Sometimes the weights come loose and that's when bodies are seen floating down the river.

BTW, the pano showed that 'dancing segments' problem that cropped up
a little while back when Flash 10 was new. Are you using the latest
version of FPP?

I second and third your responses--bought a NN2 several years back. The index knob was 'flaky', called Bill Bailey--new knob arrived several days later. This classy service keeps a new company viable and valuable.

it's a bit flaky. the hotspot on the door doesn't stay and for some reason the
greybox (in a floatbox) gets smaller from the right.
would like to know if works or it totally doesn't work in other browsers etc.
it takes a while to load.

Another thought was that this was yet another of those occasions (like fireworks too say) where you have to keep checking to see if your lens is clean (I see dead people!).

New York Celebrates Yankees

The Yankees was celebrated in New York yesterday with a large ticker
parade.Jook Leung was there.
(For Non US Citizens - Yankees is a Baseball team in New York and they
won their 27th World Series on Thursday.)

You need Hugin 0.8.0 or later, the output can be set in the
Projection pull-down menu in either the Preview window or in the
Stitcher tab.
