2.4 rc2

Hello again,

sorry for the "rc" again - I thought it would be nice to get used to the
sourceforge release system again. I must tell that the interface has
very much improved. It's a lot easier than it used to be.

I've just released 2.4rc2, updated the website and expect 2.4 to be
almost identical (as I've already found a last-minute-change that I have
not fully implemented - filed as PEBBLE-12).

If you can, please help reproducing PEBBLE-3
(https://open.jira.com/browse/PEBBLE-3). If it can be reproduced, it can
be fixed...

I honestly expect 2.4 to be out before christmas. /This/ year ;)

As said before, I've found these exceptions in our tomcat logs after Pebble
somehow behaved unexpectedly (and it often does). I don't have the time to
build reproducible test cases for you. If I could, I would solve the bug
myself. If someone would offer professional support for Pebble, we would
take that.

I understand, that you rather try to solve the cause, but if that's not
possible adding more assertions, e.g. not-null-checks, at much earlier
stages would be the best alternative. At least that could provide better
bug-reports in the future and would also solve some documenting purpose in
the code.

Release 2.4 imminent

Hello,

as said in my last mail, it's been a busy weekend with some commits to
the repository. There's one bug that I'd like to close that I can't
reproduce - it's among those that Mike has found:

"https://open.jira.com/browse/PEBBLE-3: Unpublish and re-publish an
entry (with a different date) will cause this entry to disappear"

If anybody can reproduce this in 2.4rc, please let me know the steps to
reproduce.

Otherwise I'd be ready for 2.4

I've just had some issues with Java6 and decided to go forward with the
development environment on Java6 only, as even Sun has stopped
supporting Java5 last month.

Doing so I've upgraded xerces to 2.9.0 - see

Hi Pebblers!

I apologize - I've been a little out of touch recently, but I thought
I'd drop in to see if I might be able to rekindle any interest in a
PebbleUserGroup blog?

The rerason I am asking is because I had to drop my expensive
($80/month) business DSL service which I was using to host the
original PebbleUserGroup.org web site on a server in my basement, so
the orginal blog is no longer on the network. Instead, I have created
a Google Site by the name of "PebbleUserGroup" which could
theoretically be used to host a reincarnated version of the blog via
Google App Engine (GAE).

Renato are you listening? I think the idea of doing this on GAE was
originally your idea? Has anyone ever had any luck deploying a Pebble
blog onto a Google Site / GAE before? I have read that GAE doesn't
yet support war files, but would this mean that you could simply unzip
the WAR manually and deploy it this way?

What kind of spam do you mean? Is it comments that contain links to this
site, Referrer from those sites? Sites attacking leading to log entries?
Visitors IP addresses resolving to these sites? What behaviour do you
expect (this is easy, but leads to the underlying question) what are the
criteria to decide a certain site being spam?

Hi Rob,

it's supposed to be automatic at startup. Worked during my last (brief)
test when I installed 2.3.2, created a static page and then started
trunk on this data. I must have missed something obvious.

What kind of spam do you mean? Is it comments that contain links to this
site, Referrer from those sites? Sites attacking leading to log entries?
Visitors IP addresses resolving to these sites? What behaviour do you
expect (this is easy, but leads to the underlying question) what are the
criteria to decide a certain site being spam?

Hello, SMTP SPAM is easy to remedy with a RBL or DNS Blacklist. In this
case if don't get any better suggestions (Olaf etc.) I went to the
trouble of running a whois on the URL. You can see the results of the
whois included below. This is a typical RIPE NIC SCAM. The only thing
you can do right now is create a firewall blacklist rule with the info
below. Only block the port that your Pebble is running on:

netdirekt.de
212.95.32.0/19

Need help with spam

Hi all,

since my last enquiry in regards of some issues with log reports I been keeping an eye on them.
I discovered that every day some stupid viagra website (today it was http://viagia.taldalafilrx.info) is making request to my site.
Each time when I found one of the requests I would mark it as spam.
However next day another request with similar name would be there. Seems like Pebble filter is not able to stop it.
Is there anything you can recommend me to do?

Re: 2.4 rc: Migration of static pages

Olaf,

I did some exploring as I did not know how the static pages function
was supposed to have changed between 2.3.1 and 2.4rc.

I created a new static page in the 2.4rc instance. It works fine. It
is filed differently than the old ones, as it sits in a folder called
~/pebble/blogs/<blog name>/pages/<new page file name> rather than
directly in the pages folder. When I imported the old static pages no
new folders were created. So, I was able to "import" one of my static
pages from the 2.3.1 version by following the following tedious
procedure (tedious that is if you have 50 static pages as I do).

1) cd ~pebble/blogs/pages/<blog name>/pages
2) mkdir 1157140501500 for the file 1157140501500.xml
3) mv 1157140501500.xml 1157140501500
4) repeat ad nauseum for 50 pages...
5) reindex blog

As expected, the pages show up in the static pages list without
reindexing but the links don't work until I reindex.

Am I doing something wrong in the migration process?!

3) "Added" blog of that name to 2.4rc
4) Checked blog - everything is fine except the static pages are not
found.

Is there anything else I should tell you about this that might help in

thanks to the miracles of git-svn I've managed my first distributed
commit this morning followed by the catch-up svn commit a few minutes ago.

I've also marked the simple chinese translation as "completely
translated" - right?

2.4 rc: Migration of static pages

Hi all,

There has been a report a while back that 2.4rc didn't correctly convert
static pages to the new format. I've tried to reproduce this when it was
reported and remember to have succeeded. When I tried to reproduce it
yesterday and today, I couldn't - static pages created on 2.3 were
successfully migrated in an update to 2.4.

Can somebody else (still running on 2.3.x) reproduce that static pages
are missing after the update to 2.4 rc? Note: Please do so in a local
environment instead of your production environment. If you're operating
with standard settings, this involves copying your directory ~/pebble.
Of course, you have a backup for this, right?

Sure - sorry for not having done this more quickly.

As I'm writing this mail offline I can only check for the exact issues
in my mailbox, not online...

The one I remember best is that static pages don't migrate well - e.g.
they disappear when upgrading from 2.3.x to 2.4. This is

It would probably be good to check the exception issues that have been
reported as well, though I currently remember them mainly as "noisy log
file filling", not as showstopping bugs in the system (see jira issues),
but my memory might be wrong.

As you probably have noticed, I've had way more plans than i actually
acted upon due to several other involvements, and pebble has the
advantage of "just working" (apart from the recently discovered&fixed
log file parsing problem http://open.jira.com/browse/PEBBLE-8)

Should somebody want to compare the static page storage from 2.3 and
2.4: Please go ahead. I guess that I'll not get to it during the next days.

Customizing the welcome-page

Hi list!

First of all - I am big fan of pebble - this is a really nice piece of
software!

A feature I would like to use, is a customized welcome-page, which
contains some
fixed introductionary text and the abstracts of the last 3 blog-
entries on the bottom.
Sort of like a "recent news/blog-entries ticker" integrated into some
static content.

I did setup this at my private site by integrating pebble into my
"main" web-application
and serving an index.jsp which queries the last blog-entries from
pebble using XML-RPC.

However, if there is a chance to have this done directly in pebble,
I'd completely switch
my complete site to using pebble (i.e. all static pages).

Any hints for doing this?

is only (very) inconvenient.

Hi Markus,

thanks for reporting. With regards to the javascript link using the
editor - I believe that this is a result from some anti-xss-measurements
that NoScript does. If you have installed this plugin, please try by
deactivating it for a short test.

It might be that this also fixes your "double click" issue. Please try
and report back.

Bugs in the WYSIWYG editor - http links and images

Hi,
I'm a little startled that there is no report for the web editor
problems already.
To create a link I've always to use the link popup twice.
The first time the OK button doesn't continue. The popup stays in place.
Although the marked text is marked as a link the link url is wrong.
It has become some javascript:... stuff.
After canceling, I've to reselect the text in editor and now see the
javascript:... stuff in url line.
I put in the correct url and now OK button works and the link is set
correctly.
Same is with image selection popup.
I'm using Firefox 3.5.3 Linux and pebble 2.4rc.
Should be fixed before 2.4 release I think ;-)
