Reading the manual is amazingly helpful:
http://www.php.net/manual/en/install.windows.php

I would also suggest to simply use the MS Web Platform installer, it
will setup everything you need, even mysql or other non php.net
softwares. It uses the same installer than php.net (fetched from the
same location).

For your other questions, that's not directly windows specific
questions but more about developments and deployments "strategy",
there are dozen of tutorials about these topics out there.

Frustrated new php "developer" on Windows

I am just beginning with PHP and have been looking at how to setup a
local development environment and frankly am frustrated. I am
currently using a Windows 7 x64 laptop and will be using a hosted web
service with Windows Server, MySQL, PHP, IIS and PHPMyAdmin. The
problem is I can not seem to find very good information of how to set
this up on Windows 7 locally so that I can create and test before I
upload to the server.

Or...what do most Windows users do? Should I just write the code
locally, then upload it and test it on the actual server? That seems
like a terribly slow way to do this. I am currently using web.com as
the hosting company.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Where does a new person start?
Are there any good guides that you use to set up this type of local
environment? Do I just install each piece...PHP, MySQL, etc. and work
through it as I go? Am I looking for a "how to setup WIMP" that
doesn't exist?

If you don't want to start from scratch, have a look at the PHP
addressbook [1] and the demo installation of it [2]. The system offers
all the functionality needed for a mailing list system + address book
functionality, but it is lacking the ability of self-registration, which
you could implement by yourself and contribute the modification to the
project.

I don't think it's outside the scope of this list, as WPI is just one
method of installing PHP and this proves my point and the reason why I
don't use the WPI.

For other people knowledge and for archiving purpose the problem was
because PHP MSI custom install action is failing. I helped Steve working
it around by doing the handler mapping manually.

I disagree with this. I find the web platform installer to be inconsistent at times, and I for one prefer to know exactly how my system is configured. I never could get the WPI to work for PHP at all (works ok with other application services.

I would suggest to simply uninstall what you have used so far and install PHP using the Web platform installer (as you use IIS). It will install everything you need in one go and relies on windows.php.net binaries (it uses our installer but passes the right options directly). You can fetch it here http://www.microsoft.com/web/

Steve, it might have been possible that your PHP installation was loading the libMySQL.DLL which is present in MySQL installation and not compatible with PHP MySQL extension. Solving this would have been easier by just ensuring that in the PATH extension C:\Program Files\PHP comes first. However the state you are in now, I am not sure. Try doing the below:
1. Uninstall everything whatever you have installed so far. When I say everything I mean everything i.e. Zend Server CE, PHP install, FastCGI etc.
2. Get Microsoft Web Platform installer and install PHP from there. This will configure everything for you. Please install PHP from http://php.iis.net/.

I would suggest to simply uninstall what you have used so far and
install PHP using the Web platform installer (as you use IIS). It will
install everything you need in one go and relies on windows.php.net
binaries (it uses our installer but passes the right options
directly). You can fetch it here http://www.microsoft.com/web/

Can you ensure that the PHP INI directive 'short_open_tag'is set to 'On'. Details about this can be found at http://php.net/manual/en/ini.core.php. I would advise to use

This will ensure that there is no confusion among different languages using a similar notation like XML.

PHP info can't find MySql with IIS web server

I'm trying to install the latest version of PHP on a 2003 server running
IIS. PHP runs fine but when I run phpinfo(), it doesn't find MySql. At the
end of my php.ini file I have:

[PHP_MYSQL]
extension=php_mysql.dll

And

extension_dir = "c:\progra~1\PHP\ext"

In my path variable I have:
c:\progra~1\PHP;c:\progra~1\PHP\ext;c:\progra~1\MYSQLS~1.1\bin;

Can anyone tell me what else I need to do to get PHP to recognize MySql?

Silverlight is on the client side, a browser or a desktop application.
PHP, ASP.net or whatever else you use is on the server. Silverlight
calls an URL to fetch some data, this data can be XML, JSON or plain
text, it will then process it to display it.

I would suggest to read some silverlight tutorials to have some basic
ideas about how it works and then ask PHP specific questions. If it
happens that you will use PHP for the server side.

Silverlight can be embedded to *any* kind of web page, it does not have to be embedded into a PHP file. To give you an overview of the process, here are the steps being processed when the silverlight app is called:
1.) the client access the web page with the XAP file embedded
2.) the client's browser checks if there is a file association for xap files, resulting in Silverlight being called if it is installed
3.) the silverlight component loads the embedded XAP file
4.) the init routine of your silverlight project is called
5.) your silverlight project is now running on the client, in the webbrowser security context

If your silverlight accesses data from a remote database server, the data access is not being handled by the server which served your XAP file but the connection is directly been made by the user's client PC.

Hope some question marks are gone now :-)

to display data and now I am using linq to sql to get data into the
grid.

This should work with my php app once packaged into an XAP file and
embedded into my php page.

That's the only way I know...yes or no.

If no then I need to know the simplest way to do it as I am too new to
this and I have so many choices. And I am looking at a more dynamic site
and a cleaner look.

Silverlight was intended to be some kind of an alternative (or better
competitor) to Adobe's Flash player: Silverlight and Flash applications
both run on the client side, applications are embedded in a website or
called externally by the Flash player Standalone (don't know if there is

a standalone Silverlight player).

In your case you could create a Silverlight application and embed this
into one of your pages or you could create a serverside application with

PHP which provides the functionality you desire.

Regarding your other question about Apache and IIS on one machine (which

may be obsolete now):
1.) You can have your PHP scripts run on IIS as well
2.) Simply change your HTTP port in Apache (in httpd.conf) to something
like 8080 and install IIS afterwards, it will use port 80 automatically
if is available
3.) You can also call and control windows applications / components
(like ADODB.Recordsets and so on) with various PHP functions, so you
probably don't have to use IIS additionally to your Apache

Why do u say kind of .. there is an nice tutorial where a silverlight
datagrid is created with a linq to sql class. Can I embed this into my
php code hosted on apache...please help I am stuck

You can if they're run on different ports... but it would be far easier
just to move PHP onto IIS as well...

I plan to make a webservice that will connect to my sql server database
and then the silverlight datagrid control can interact with my web
service.

But the problem now is my app is PHP and is hosted on apache. Where will
I host my web service - IIS. Can I have apache and iis on the same
machine.

writing a
POX endpoint in your web page and using WebRequest/WebResponse methods
to
manually grab your data. Always been faster for me than screwing around
with
WCF.

Then you can display the Silverlight xap as an embedded object.

As far of the silverlight side of things, I've done an example (using
ASP.NET MVC) that uses basic WebRequest and WebResponse objects. This
version used JSON serialization, but XML is a little bit easier.
