State pattern, nesting video player states?

Hi list!

I got a question concerning the State pattern. I'm coding a video player in Flash and I'm trying to use the State Pattern to handle all the different states of the player. A few days ago there was a similar post about this topic but no answer could solve my questions.

I'm creating a videoplayer that should have following states:

- idle (nothing happening, all buttons disabled, video screen black)
- show preroll (all buttons disabled, video screen showing a short flv)
- show video (some buttons enabled, video screen showing the real flv)
- show postroll (all buttons disabled, video screen showing a short flv)

I currently have a statemachine which controls the following states of the overall video player: PlayState, StopState, PauseState (all implementing the IState interface).

How do I continue? Something is telling me that creating a PreRollState, PostRollState, RealVideoState and adding them to the list of states (like PlayState, StopState, ...) isn't a correct solution. (Because all the states have to implement methodes they do not need, like: stopPlay(), startPlay(), ...)

- Do I have to nest the states of the above list with the states I already made for the playing, stopping, ...
- Do I have to use the playstate, stopstate, pausestate for the controls only? But what with the overall states of the video player in the list above

I'm a bit stuck at the moment :)
Would be nice if somebody could give me a little push in the right direction.

WebService Problem

hi, i´m building a game that needs comunication with a webservice.

i´m using de MVC+FrontController pattern that pixLib provides, following this tutorial http://dev.webbymx.net/2007/04/30/pixlib-tut-03-how-to-load-assets-at-runtime/

i´ve created a class WS that manage de webservice connection (through the mx.services.WebService class) and its methods (through mx.services.PendingCall),
that WS class is instantiated in the Model, and the connection to the webservice is made once the assets have been loaded.

the connection to the webservice is succesful, but when i´m trying to call a method of that ws i receive the following error: "Unable to connect to endpoint: http://..."

i have checked the webservice connection and method call outside pixLib framework and there is no problem.

do you have an idea of what can be wrong, or can give me other solution to make the connection to the ws?

i copy here a piece of code of my WS class,
i got the error when calling any method, for example initGame.

Thanks Mike for sharing. Appreciate it! I have also been playing with PureMVC and now will look at Prana for Ioc. I was playing with Parsley but Prana seems more
intuned with PureMVC framework. Have you looked at Parsley at all? I am also awaiting a stable lowRA version....hopefully, Francis will soon end that wait :)

If I understand your post, you recommand to add a view ( extending MovieClipHelper ?) in each swf in order to create a way to communicate with the model of the main application, added them listening this model ?

If I use my schema, B, C, D do have a view listening A model ?

Is not more logic that the models communicate and dispatch event to the views ?
Application B, C and D, when they are loaded, create a way ( I don't know how) to communicate with the A model, get all information needed for the first initialization and dispatch theses informations to the views. later in the application ,if needed, models can communicate in order to update informations.

I really want to know and understand the best way to resolve this problem. I want to be able to add and remove application, allow theses to communicate with the others, or at least with the main application. All of that properly :-)

Communication between swf

It's more a question about OOP thant pixlib question, but I use pixlib and the MVC FC pattern to build my applications, so I thinks it's a question I can post here.
I've a main application based on MVC FC pattern. This application always load two other swf based or not in the MVC FC pattern too. In order to shared information these 3 swf files can access singleton where I put some datas. It's a way to allow the 2 others swf files loaded to initialize themself with the current context of the application. Indeed, when theses swf files was loaded I don't know the best way to create a communication between them and the main application. Via the main class of each one ? via the models of each one ? how ?

well, after thinking about it I came to the conclusion that I kind of missed the
point, mainly because I often dont use an explicit model for UI components, I
generally just model the 'business domain' and not the application.

so...I think Edgars is right that if you have an explicit model for this UI
component then that would be the place to perform the state management, BUT,
I think that in this case it would probably be overkill as although you can look
at it as a change of state, it appears to me to be more of a change of
configuration, either some buttons are enabled or they are not, rather than the
buttons performing different actions depending on the state. (Im talking about
this part in context of only the 'transport' section, play / stop etc..)

Probably what is a good idea in this case is to reduce the whole 'Video Player'
component into sub-components and deal with them seperately.

i.e.

Transport Control (the play / stop buttons etc..)
Video Info (current position, length, amount buffered)
Display Controls (toggle fullscreen)
Video View (displays the actual video)

then the Video Player component combines all this pieces together. That way you
dont always have to use all the pieces, you might want a simple player with just
a video view that plays when its ready.

( for instance a video player can also have a normalviewState, fullscreenviewState,... witch can influence behavioour of all other states )
it's for this reason i want a clean solution that keeps code clean and elegant, but also very flexible.

the solution that Martin described seems ok. placing states between controller and model. if i think about it. it's a bit command pattern like, no?

to me that sounds like the state part is the 'VideoController'

Hey,

I would have a sollution as follows:

have a _state property in model
have get and set functions
set function also dispaches notifyChanged STATE_CHANGE
in EventList whave public static var STATE_CHANGE : EventType = new EventType( "onStateChange )
all the Views would be added as listeners to the model
add any other necessary listeners for this particular event in model
this event would be listened by "onStateChange" functions
in the listeners you can have a switch statement for necessary changes
and for the functions who need to change implementation depending on state, also have a switch or if

now i'm building a video player and using mvc

the players flow:

do some checks on video ( countdown, geolock, etc.. )
display image
start preroll ( flv or swf )
display image or continue
start video
start postroll ( flv or swf )

each state has it's own behavior ( play/pause/stop etc... witch buttons to enable/disable )
of course i can use a switch statement somewhere in my playbackmodel but i would like a cleaner more elegant solution
a solution that can be used in other projects too ( as an architecture )

for me the real question is always : what problem are you trying to solve?

Its quite hard (for me at least) to suggest how to create something without 
knowing what the purpose is. Really, any part of the MVC triad could use an

for me the real question is always : what problem are you trying to solve?

How can the mvc pattern and the state pattern be combined in a useful way?
should the model act as a state machine?
should the state machine sit in between a controller and the model?

Thanks Mike for sharing. Appreciate it! I have also been playing with PureMVC and now will look at Prana for Ioc. I was playing with Parsley but Prana seems more
intuned with PureMVC framework. Have you looked at Parsley at all? I am also awaiting a stable lowRA version....hopefully, Francis will soon end that wait :)

Why am I using the Prana/ PureMVC combo to do my AS3 IoC apps ?

Reasons are very simple.

First, as many of you I'm waiting for a stable release of LowRA's IoC package.
Second,I needed my brain to take some fresh air and have some fun with somethin' new.

Finally, if you ask me what would be my choice between those 2 frameworks I would say LowRA 'cause I'm too much used to it ;)

Bug in Pixioc ChannelListenerExpert?

Hi there I'm trying to use pixioc (-r6) project for the first time.

I am compiling with FlashCS3 (yes I know ^^) but I haven't got my
build script to handle multiple swfs builds yet (i use textmate).

I was having some trouble getting one plugin to listen to another so
I've starting debugging various things and I'm seeing some strange
things happening with many calls to

ApplicationBroadcaster.getChannelDispatcher(undefined,undefined);

so anyway I've stripped my app context down to just 1 plugin (with no
channel) and still get this call happening many times.

After some more digging I've tracked it down to this method in the
ChannelListenerExpert:

public function buildChannelListener( listenerID : String,
channel ) : Void
{
if ( typeof(channel.attribute.channel) == "string" )
{
_aChannelListener.push( _buildChannelListener( listenerID,
channel.attribute ) );

} else
{
var l : Number = channel.length;

channel[i].attribute) );
}
}

So tracing shows the listenerID = my plug in name and the channel =
com.bourre.ioc.events.PixiocSystemChannel

The second part of the if statement is executing with the length is
coming up as 41 which is of course the length of
'com.bourre.ioc.events.PixiocSystemChannel' so I think because it's
not Array Flash is coercing the type of object into String to get
length rather than just give undefined. Or am i missing something else?

Little question about pixlib / pixioc :

- I have a litlle set of "only code" components that I use in my pix
projects
Where is the best place to create them?
I'm actualy creating them in the view class
best in the view swf ? like the other graphical elements...

- I will now work width graphic designers to create several templates
for a pixioc project
How to allow them to use their own components (components with their own
logic and methods) ?
I know that best the way is to modify the view class but that is likely
to be hard for the graphic designer (to have pixlib, import the good
classes, etc)
What do you think about using a setData(o) method in the view swf to
allow all possibilities ?

- how to resize views ?
I'm actualy resizing them in the view class..
What do you think about using a setSize(w,h) function in the view swf ?
That would make it possible to the graphic designer to manage the
redimensioning of the view...
Is there a best way ?
