Place Lab is software providing low-cost, easy-to-use device positioning for location-enhanced computing applications. Place Lab tries to provide positioning which works worldwide, both indoors and out (unlike GPS which only works outside). Place Lab clients can determine their location privately without constant interaction with a central service (unlike badge tracking or mobile phone location services where the service owns your location information). The Place Lab approach is to allow commodity hardware clients like notebooks, PDAs and cell phones to locate themselves by listening for radio beacons such as 802.11 access points, GSM cell phone towers, and fixed Bluetooth devices that already exist in large numbers around us in the environment. These beacons all have unique or semi-unique IDs, for example, a MAC address. Clients compute their own location by hearing one or more IDs, looking up the associated beacons’ positions in a locally cached map, and estimating their own position referenced to the beacons' positions. PlaceLab home is here.

If you take a look at the "native" section of placelab there is native code that must be installed on whatever platform you are using placelab on in order to access the wifi hardware (the win native is different then the linux native). I suspect that in order to implement placelab on a N95, you will have to figure out what the native code is to access the wifi hardware.
I am not sure what may be causing this, but just as a shot in the dark I would guess that it has something to do with the driver for the WiFi Card under Vista. We had a similar problem with bluetooth drivers and hardware in XP. In our case we needed Dlink hardware and drivers for it to run.
Hope this helps,

I have never used that part of place lab but I would guess that there
is a parser somewhere for MapLoaderGUI that needs to be changed. Thats
the way it is for the parts I have experience for anyway. So you would
need to go into MapLoaderGUI.java and trace back where the data comes
in to where it is parsed. Then update the parser code.

Again, only a guess though.

Its been a while since I worked with placelab but as far as I can remember
it is possible to use a USB WiFi card. Some types of DLINK adapters are
supported I think.

Hope this helps,
Keith.

I want to try your software on a Laptop with a USB WiFi card. But I do know
which USB card is in compliance with your software.

Thanks,

Hello PlaceLab,

Do you try to use a USB WiFi card rather than a PCMCIA WiFi card in
a Laptop.

I want to try your software on a Laptop with a USB WiFi card. But I do know
which USB card is in compliance with your software.

Thanks,

Hi all,

I have to do a project at my university based on PLACELAB, but there are a lot of Access Point (> 32), when the programm is running.

Then, when my programm is running, appears an error due to MAX_APS supported by spotter.h (MAX_APS supported by the file spotter.h is 32).

I red that I had to replace this value to another, for example 1000, and re-compile spotter.dll (using jni.c, jni.h, spotter.h), is it true ?

If it's the solution, how do I re-compile this DLL? (I have got Dev-C++ but I don't find it)
Do I have to re-compile only spotter.dll or "swt-win32-3062.dll" too?

Thanks & Merry Christmas.
From forum: PlaceLab - General
